Buying a new O3 VRS. Real world economy?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. First post for me on this forum. I am on the cusp of ordering a new Octavia 3 VRS Estate. I'm interested to hear about your experiences if you have the DSG petrol VRS, manual petrol VRS, or DSG diesel VRS, on what real world economy you achieve on your day to day. My last car, a 2010 1600 diesel Cmax (go ahead, laugh) had a quoted mpg of 63mpg combined, but I rarely got it to average above 46 on a mix of town and motorway.

I've test driven a petrol manual estate today, and loved it. It was showing 32 mpg, which the dealer said was town use (which he would) I'd consider myself typical young dad, spend 99% of the time in traffic/ pottering around "listening", with the occasional spirited hustle when I'm alone.

Thanks in advance.

I've covered 1760 miles. 1400+ motorway or good a road. Average so far is 34 point something, been doing a lot of carrying sheets of ply and plasterboard on the roof plus 240+ miles with a triple extension ladder up top so factor that in, last tankful was the best, 400 motorway miles, 36.5 mpg. I expect it to improve a fair bit as it loosens, but I'm content with that.  Tsi manual, hatch.

Mine is a mark 3 petrol manual vRS estate: 32 mpg is about right in town, but I can get 38-40 on a long run.  Driving through France to Switzerland last month (less traffic, steadier cruising) it was up to 42 mpg.

This is my third vRS estate: the first was a diesel manual (170 bhp: 45-55 mpg), the second a petrol DSG (197 bhp: 30-38 mpg). I could have got 60+ mpg if I'd cruised at 60 mph.

My wife can get 60mpg on the motorway, i have no chance - 50 tops. average 38mpg since June, 42 into town commute, 30 back. Car gets a ragging whenevr possible. Manual estate.

So, currently done 14k miles in my VRS TSI DSG Hatch.

Best trip return so far has been 49.9mpg,...yep you read right. Long term average is just under 40mpg.

I can easily achieve 45mpg+ on my longer runs,........however this is only if I drive within the normal speed limit which is often hard in this car as it is too easy to go fast in.

I basically have two driving modes, when driving for work I drive like miss daisy as the mileage return means I can make money on a trip, when I drive in my own time, well bottom line is, that's play time!

The best I have seen is just over 62mpg on a really long run stuck at 50 due to road works (M6). average around town/mixed is 45mpg and that's having a bit of fun too. I really like the DSG/TDI combo.

currently at 39.1mpg on mine if you see in my signature.

I can get low 20's in heavy traffic, but normal town can see 32 ish, and motorway trips can see over 45 providing you keep it on the safe side of 70.

very respectable figures and I'm very happy with the engine.

Mine has averaged 27.4mpg during 4000 miles of mostly town driving. On an empty motorway I can get 40mpg easily but around town 25mpg is more realistic.

I've got the TDI manual VRS. So far only 1400 miles on the clock but on a mixed run, some M-way, some country roads (driving enthusiastically on the country roads!) I get about 45 mpg. I used to have the 2.0TDI elegance which ended up doing 120k miles and I found that started at around the same 45mpg but got better as time went on. The same type of journey later in that cars life was about 55mpg.

Checkout the fuelly website for the vRS TDI vs TSI as there are many users from here registered.

My manual TDI average is around 52mpg with just under 60mpg on a 100% 1000km motorway run (cruise at 125kph - average speed ~110kph).

I've always driven Ford's before, particularly  their 1.6l TDci (c-max/focus) and older 2.0 TDci (mk3 Mondeo).

In my opinion their 1.6l TDI is extremely poor on fuel economy when compared with the e.g. the VAG 1.6l TDI.

I averaged >50mpg in the 2.0 Mondeo and around 45mpg in the 1.6l Focus.

It seems to me that the fuel ecomony of the VAG engine is very good when the car is driven gently.

I would imaging with the vRS TDI you should get at least around the same (45mpg). I have no experience with the TSI engine.

However, with fuel economy the driving style always makes a large difference.

Tdi DSG, 6500 miles.

Regularly see mid 40s to the gallon mid 50s achievable.

I reckon if you bank on low to mid 40s on a combined cycle you won't be far adrift.

How many miles do you drive annually and do you prefer performance and refinement or mpg? The TSI is the better drivers car but the tdi

With my tank full to the brim down to 5 miles left, I managed;

Total Distance: 517miles

Average Speed: 43mph

mpg for total trip: 52.6mpg

That is with mixed town, autobahn (at an average cruise cortrol of 140kph) and A & B road driving. Driving modes used were Normal and Eco only. As I was on my family hols I drove mostly like miss Daisy.

I was expecting better as my last car (a Superb 140bhp 2.0tdi) managed better and was quite a bit heavier often regularly breaking 60mpg. So far, I have not beaten 57mpg on the same runs / journeys and have to put it down to the engine still being tight as I have just broken the 3400 miles point.

If I were you, pit your annual mileage against the extra cost of buying & filling a TDI VRS. Work out how many fill ups will you manage to do with all that money with a petrol (more fun) TSI VRS.

Thank you everyone for your insight! I've been on the forum regularly, but didn't spot the notification of all your responses, I just stumbled across this. I'm not using the car for work, we will probably be doing less than 10,000kms/ year, and I sold my motorbike when my son arrived, so I've ordered the TSI turbo. I can live with the higher consumption. 4.5 months and counting to go (hours, minutes and so on :peek:  )

2400 miles done now ( petrol manual hatch) I think the engine may be starting to loosen slightly. Long term average is 35 mpg and last tank managed 39+ but it was almost all motorway and A road and day time (so cruising speed is..... Legal), could have just been the driving style giving the better mpg.

I was doing about 15000 miles per year when I bought my VRS TDI manual, was offered a slightly newer TSI for the same price, but at that mileage it would have worked out expensive... Now dropped my mileage to about 13000m per year, but still not low enough for the TSI in my opinion.

Getting about 52mpg on a commute that's mostly ring-roads, can easily get high 50's on the motorway if I keep the speed below 70.

800 miles in. Still losing up, but economy good so far.

Best single trip so far;

Also just noticed the car at the bottom of the screen moves towards the right as the range drops.

I have a diesel, manual O3 vRS.  Since I've had it, I've done 6,039 miles, used 672.19 litres of fuel and averaged 43.38mpg at an average cost of £0.131 per mile.  That's all calculated using the Road Trip app on my phone - the car consistently reads 2/3mpg better on the display.  The best I've managed on a single journey is 72mpg (according to the car) and the best I've managed over a tank of fuel is 50.71mpg (according to the app).

It's done 10,000 miles now and I'm hoping it's going to improve somewhat, but then I do drive it quite hard...
