DSG Knock / Clunk in drive

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a constant problem with what can only be described as a knocking noise whilst in drive. This occurs when a gear is selected (in D or manual) and the accelerator is released suddenly or pressed suddenly. It feels as if there is slack in the drive.

The car has been in several times since new and I am currently in a battle with Skoda as they cannot locate the fault. They are currently trying to locate an identical car to compare. My car is a 61 plate VRS TDI DSG with 58k on the clock.

Skoda fitted a new DSG in 2012 after changing the Mechatronic ECU but this did not cure the fault. Last week, a new drive shaft was fitted and this still occurs.

Any advice would be appreciated because Skoda have not got a clue.

Cheers

Colin

Sounds like an engine/gearbox mount to me.

hi,

That was my thought but Skoda are refusing to change anything unless it is identified as the cause as the car is under warranty. Had the fault from new so I can't see it being an issue due to wear.

Cheers

Next time the car is in at the dealers being looked at and you are in one of their courtesy cars tell them you aren't picking it back up until they have found and fixed the fault.

Assuming the dealer has heard the sound for themselves, and has compared it with a similarly equipped DSG car to confirm the noise is unique to your car then they are obliged to fix it under warranty.

You shouldn't have to be messing around taking it back every time they claim to have fixed it.

Hello. I have the same knocking noise when the accelerator is released suddenly or pressed suddenly or when the gearbox is changing back from 3 to 2. I can reproduce this only in second and third gear. My car has 62k on the clock, the gearbox oil was changed but its the same as before. The gearbox mounts and engine mounts were checked. Skoda said its normal, but I dont think so. Its been now for 10000 miles but its not better or worse. I suspect it can be solved by changing the clutch kit. One of my friends in germany had the same and for him this was the solution.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this mostly occurs when the engine is cold.

My car is currently on just shy of 38,000 miles.

No knocks from ours... and my other half is a bit rough with the throttle!

So if a dealer says this is normal they are most likely telling you a lie to get out of doing any more investigative work!

Hi,

The dealers have accepted there is a fault but will not change anything until they have checked a similar car. The car is used a a response car (it is fitted with blue lights) so cannot afford to leave it at the garage for weeks in end. I am hoping my complaint to Skoda UK will push things on but not holding my breathe.

They have promised to sort under warranty even though it runs out next week.

Zoli888777,

Mine is the opposite. It is fine when cold but gets worst the more I drive. I think this is probably why Skoda could not find the fault until I took them out in the car. I first noticed it when decelerating and could hear a knock when the car went from 3rd to 2nd but know get this in any gear if I coast then dab the throttle. I suspect a mounting or part of the suspension but was hoping the 'experts' would be able to locate this.

Ah. That makes sense then. Definitely can't be leaving it with them then.

And yes as you have reported the fault within the warranty period it has to be fixed under warranty even if the repair is done outside of the warranty period.

It doesn't sound like anything to do with the gearbox itself but definitely sounds like a mount, bush or suspension problem.

Fingers crossed that your letter gives them a kick up the bum.

Haha. Good. Keep on wearing them down till they give in and actually start replacing something!

Puzzler, keep us updated please if they find something. Maybe it will help me and other people here.

OK. An update.

Skoda have looked at a similar car to mine and test drove it. Apparently, this also makes a knocking sound but not as loud as mine so the Technical Department have replied and told SKoda to clsoe the case. Not F'in happy. Customer Services are involved and I have told them that this canot be normal as it does not do it all the time, and I think only 1 person on this site has said they have a similar issue. Currently checking with some contacts who use Blue Light vehicles to see if any operate Diesel DSG's but most use Manuals.

Been promised an update by Thursday so will keep all posted.

One unhappy Octavia owner :-(

That is very frustrating.

So because another of their cars does it then it's normal... hmmmm...

Have they thought that the other car they tested also shares the same problem?!

Keep pushing them and see about taking it higher with Skoda UK.

As I said before... NO CLUNKS from my DSG gearbox. 2007(57) 38,000 miles.

Phil

I can't say I've noticed any clunks on mine either. 59 plate with 33k on the clock.

I have an identical car but lower mileage - March 2012 24K miles - not a trace of the fault you describe.  I don't make a habit of suddenly releasing or pressing the accelerator but tried it just to see if I could replicate the fault you describe.

Hi,

I've noticed today that it seems to clunk into drive when switching between N and D. Not sure if that is relevant or not. I have now got the VAG Blie Light section involved but not having much look. technical have told the dealer to close the case but I ain't letting them until I know if it is normal or not. Based on the comments above, it is obviously not.

Will keep pushing.

Cheers

mine has a very slight cluck when cold and when just started  so revs are slightly higher.

Honestly maybe the best thing to do is see when there is a northern meet or a local member to you with the same car and see if they are able to meet up and see if their car is the same.

Hey, I've got the exact same problem as Puzzler has. The knocking sound when I accelerate and then release the pedal, the burning smell, everything the same. Has anyone managed to figure out if it's the DSG gearbox or anything else? Clutch or something else?

Thanks

I have a very similar issue with mine which clunks mainly when cold. Only thing is mine is manual and seems to clunk as the clutch takes up drive.

My 61 reg with dsg has no noise like mentioned, its now done 71300 miles. Only mine has a noise which my old 55 plate had and that had done 59700 miles. Is there a difrent  tone between these cr engines

I have the same clunk problem on my VRS 80000k, clunk fown from gear3 to 2 and light rattle on accelerstion gear 4,5,6. car was tested by Skoda dealer, they said its induction noise, made me smile intheir faces, total unprofessionalizm and zero knowlege. Went to VW tech, they said my car needs DSG software update and noises must gone. Will go on Monday to do that. Wait for update

  • 1 month later...

My new Yeti with 1500 miles on the clock makes a noise, when cold, sounding like some play in the transmission when I release the throttle.. It clunks and when I reapply the throttle it clunks again. However this is not connected to gearchange.

Is a dual mass flywheel fitted? and if so, has it been ruled out?
