  • Managed to get to a track, drive around without breaking anything, and drive back!   Car performed faultlessly and it was a real hoot. Track was wet so was sliding around everywhere but it was fun.

  • ^^^^ you've installed it wrong :P

  • Ibiza 1.8T internals into the Fabia??

Far off starting?

Tomorrow hopefully. Taylor is finding out about the coolant piping for me and that's the last bit I need before it can run assuming I can find the ECU.

Awesome progress Dan its looking good, fingers crossed for the start up

Right, onward to the bit I was ignoring for the sake of my sanity...

The Ibiza relays (and circled in red, the ones that are currently present in the Fabia):

I'm undecided at this point what to do...

1) rip the Fabia internals apart and replace the loom.

Down side of this is I have to take everything out of the Fabia, and some stuff that isn't needed on the loom is going to be installed (don't like things that are not needed...). Many systems have already been removed from the 1.8T engine that I know are controlled by those relays, so not all will be required.

2) retrofit the require bits one by one from the Ibiza loom.

Starting with the ECU power relay and then fault finding until I've retrofitted what is required.

I did this when I went from PD100 to PD130 and I gave up and rewired the entire car with the vRS looms.  There were too many issues trying to get the PD130 engine loom / ECU loom talking to the central box of tricks inside the car.

Dam. How many bits were different on the PD100>PD130? I thought they were the same engine just with injectors/turbo changed?

On the plus side the engine turns over and is receiving fuel :)

Electrically I thought they would be the same, but sooo much difference it was scary.  I was also using the vRS dials initially with the original interior loom and the amount of warning lights / fault codes was a little scary :D

Any minor differences can throw up unexpected CanBus issues...

Often better to make the car think it's the donor, exactly like Ben did with his Octy engined Fabia.

Might have to do this on my Yeti/TT too.

As Richard said it can confuse the can bus if on the fabia a can bus device is labeled no.4 on the fabia but it was no.6 on the ibiza

That's the perks of the aftermarket ecu systems as you can program which devices are on the can bus and which order.

I'm not home yet so I haven't been able to find out which pipes you need.

Also one thing to remember is from fabia to fabia there were wiring changes year on year. Most notably between pre and post face lift cars. So a pd130 05 VRS loom going into a w reg pd100 would be a tough challenge to say the least!

Well even if I retrofit the Ibiza loom I've got to deal with the fact its going to be too short and short of 2 doors :p

I'm going to bodge in the relay for the EMC and go from there. One of the house rabbits was lending a hand, so there may be some repairs required :P

All else fails I can buy another loom...

I'd just wire a button inside to lock/unlock the rear two doors and boot.

Homemade rear half central locking! :)

Similar to the VX anti hijack systems

Just wire the doors in parallel no?

I.e. both passenger side doors together, so if eitehr is opened when locked it causes the Alarm to go off. splicing into the looms will be easy, and i assume they all operate the same, i.e. pulled to +12VDC when locked, to 0V when unlocked, and then an Open CIrcuit/Short Circuit switch for open/Closed (or something to that effect)

Regarding it being "too short" in what respect? if they are signals i.e. central locking commands, i would just extend the loom, but if its a bus line then it would matter. Remember car electrics tend to be "Yep im at 12 Volts" or "Nope im at 0V" only things such as Coil pack and Injector trigger pulses, crank sensors and can bus signals and so on can be sensitive to the wire used and the frequency and amplitude of the signal

I did that because i knew it worked at least. Electrical problems can take ages to sort out (especially for me) might be the easiest way to get it all sorted least your bits are from the same platform. The octy loom had things slightly different including plugs and location.

Decided to go down the Ibiza internal loom retrofit route as the chances of blowing up the ECU or cluster or something were too high with the alternative. Fabia's are built better than Ibiza's that's for sure! Not that its a good thing sometimes, I've broken 2 pieces of trim as the clips just won't give up! Also whacked the windscreen with the dash bar... productive day :(

At least the glass didnt shatter!

If there is anything I can help with don't hesitate to ask :)

When the time comes. Its not going to prevent anything from happening. No point getting it replaced, it may get broken again.

Got the loom partly in yesterday however not really much progress... the clocks/ODB don't work now, I'm sure a connection to the chassis is missing. Will just bite the bullet and install it properly... was just eager to get the engine started!

Trying to decide which suspension to buy... I think I have it narrowed down to 3:

Bilstein B12. Quality shocks/springs, no faff to set up. However I don't like estates that look like their bottom is being dragged around, it just looks like its broken... if the B12s leave the rear lower I have no option to correct without buying again. The Ibiza suspension that is on at the moment leaves the rear a bit low.

AP Coilovers. Same price as the Bilstein B12s from Germany, but not of the same caliber... will allow me to set the rear ride how I like it.

Bilstein B14. Best of both... but 50% more.

PB brakes ones?

Don't think its worth having the damper/rebound settings (for me anyway) and would rather play with a known quantity on a car I need daily for work if I did want those settings and get KW/Bilsteins with those options.

If it were a second car? Sure, PB would be an option.

Weitecs are nice too, worth a consideration anyway.
