VRS TDI Starting

Featured Replies

I've been experiencing a strange issue lately at times when starting from cold after the initial start up the engine almost stalls the revs drop to about 900 for a few seconds before settling back up to about 1000, no warning messages appear and once I move of the engine responds in the way I want it to and the stop start works fine.

I do a 45 minute journey to work on mostly dual carriageways and motorways so wouldn't think it was a dpf issue.

Anyone else had this trouble?

Does the engine speed itself really drop down or could it just be the filtering on the needle display as it is returning to idle after starting?

Does the car always idle at 1000rpm because this is not normal (unless its very cold).

I think normal idle should be 750rpm or 800rpm (will check when I get in mine tonight)

Could perhaps be a dodgy clutch switch/sensor as when you raise the clutch slightly the idle speed is increased to 950rpm to help the pull-away or idle-drive.

The engine will also idle at 1000rpm when the car is in regeneration but this should only occur when the engine is hot.

my vrs tdi has gone to the dealers today, as it was doing similar, and also the fan wouldnt cut out, its had this fan problem for a bit with no increase in revs and after a long thrash so dont think its dpf, will find out tommorrow

This is exactly what I have seen a few times with mine.

My VRS Octavia III has these start problems from the very begining.

Sympthoms vary and can be:

 - Car starts and at that very moment revs drop and it almost stalls. Then recover and return to 750 rpm

 - Same but car actually stalls.

 - And lately, the revs drop and stalls issue is not hapening anymore but the car ramdomly rattle during start.

Dealer... ehmmm says that the problem cannot be reproduced and that there is no fault reported by the car.

Take a look at the videos I took:

This sounds like a temperature sensor problem.

Coolant or AirTemp Sensor reading is too high (fans are on for cooling) and the engine starting when cold isn't good because the ECU thinks the engine is warm when its actually cold.
