Some people think the rear anchor points are too low for the shoulder straps on a harness.

So in the event of a serious accident the shoulder straps pull you down compressing your spine.

that just made me shudder. will have to look into this. whats the ideal mounting points sorry to be rather vague in all this.

  • Good car that.   Other than it's overly agressive smoke machine map for track use. (which personally I don't think does Dirty-Torque's rep much good) Put a diff in it, custom remap so the rest of u

Best have a browse online and see what you are happy with.

This is the reason we run a cross beam on a cage, it means the shoulder belts are mounted a lot higher up.

The key thing is the angle of the harness as it leaves the seat.

It generally accepted that 20 degrees is good and up to 45 degrees is acceptable.

Personally, close to 45 degrees looks a bit steep to me.

It's more than 'some people' think its wrong, its the harness manufacturers and all the motor sport regulaters.

Unless your seat is structurally designed to take the forces pushing down on it in an accident 20 degrees is the max accepted.

Anywhere between 20degrees angled down and 10degrees angled upwards is recommended.

The easy way to see how the damage will occur is by doing a side on drawing of your seat and harnesses, then imagine your body weight going forward in a impact and look where rear harnesses are bolted to car and you will see the harness will be forced down onto your shoulders by the force of your body weight moving forward.

Have you made a decision about mounting them?

As you mainly use the car on the road I'd leave the normal seatbelts in too.

Designed for the job and a hell of a lot easier if you are popping five minutes up the road.

If the straps are long enough would they go over a rear strut brace, then fix them?

do you mean to go  over and round the rear strut brace to raise the angle i take it. good thinking. I havent fitted them yet as I simply havent had time.

I havent fitted the new ones yet as i simply havent had time however im not sure the eye bolt will be able to attach the original seatbelt fixings as well. will update asap.

Would improve the angle a lot, but you would need to make sure the strut brace is mounted to the shell so it can take the forces of possibly two people's weight moving forwards in a impact.

Yes that was my thinking behind it

Unbolt them.

After removing trim.

Well. New harnesses. eye bolts fit perfect apart from the one the bolts to the seat so need to source 2 less coarse eye bolts and then its sorted. It has killed my spirit for it a little bit but fingers crossed sunshine makes me back to normal. If not harnesses will be up for grabs normal seat belts will stay with the buckets and the back seats will go back in.

Saw your car at the tilton meet last night with Ryan, car looks well on purple rims and the seats look awesome :)

Tilbury. Should of come and said hello. Did you go thurrock after was really busy there.

Yeah that's the one! I didn't actually see you tbf, I wasn't in my car I was in a blue fez St, we went and got something to eat from there and then went home :)

I ran buckets in mine with regular seat belts.

Harnesses have the "Race Factor" but IMO are a PITA in a road car and not really needed anyway.

If you do fit them I'd still keep the regular belts for when you pop down the road and don't want to spend 50% as long putting the belts on as driving.

Sticking with standard belts for now as I simply haven't got the time to collect the new eye bolt until next Tuesday. On the upside im going to Brooklands Hotel & Mercedez Benz world this weekend coming :)

Congrats. :)

Have a nice time.

They do some good track demonstrations.

Ok, after playing catch up, mounting both shoulder straps to a single chassis point is/was acceptable, but:-

  1. The belts need to be specifically designed for this with a Y-shape shoulder set, you can't just run both straps of a 4 strap set to the same point and use one from a rear belt.
  2. The belts need to be specifically designed for this with a Y-shape shoulder set, you can't just run both straps of a 4 strap set to the same point and use one from a rear belt.
  3. The mounting point needs to be between the strap holes side to side.
  4. As discussed at some length already, the mount needs to be as high as possible (this has been known since WW2; have a look at the strap design on a Spitfire or Hurricane).

Right there in. I will be looking into sorting out the angle on the harnesses eventually if not I might put standard seats & belts back in.

Will stay like this at least for BHP show @ Lydden hill
