6 wks old - broken down. Not chuffed.

Ask for a 50/50ish meet at some place where you can have a nice calming lunch before test driving it back.

  • But if you'd got it back and it wasn't right you'd be complaining about not enough diagnostics! Remember the Titanic was brand new! Bit of a reality check needed! What do you want out of this?

  • and maybe check for damage to the sump guard, see if its been airborne...

I just think they are being over cautious - the worst thing they could do would be to ask you to come and collect the car and you get halfway home and the problem comes back. At that point you have wasted 4 hours of your time and are still at the dealers with a 2 hour drive home in a courtesy car if they have one. I think they are trying to 'go the extra mile' and be 100% sure, but are making a pigs ear of communicating that to you.

Either that or they haven't got a scoobies and are scratching around still trying to fix it.

Thats precisely my concern. Why else would they want it for an extra day?

If they're going the extra mile to be sure then great, and I appreciate they don't want me going away with the car to have it break down again. They said as much today. But to say it'll be ready in the morning, then say the want it for another day 'just to be sure' leaves me feeling uneasy. And I hate the thought of my car being driven around by an unknown person. I'm sure its not every day they take someone else's vRS home to play with.

The dealer principal will have had plenty of vRSs to drive if they wanted to. Better the dealer principal than the mechanic in my experience. Did you clock how many miles were on the clock when it went in?

IT was the dealer principal who had it the first night. Someone else has it tonight but I'm trying not to think about it. To be honest the car being driven about annoys me more than it breaking down.

I know there was 1410 miles on the trip computer. Hopefully they won't have reset it.

Interesting how many of us have gone from Subaru to Skoda but still miss our Subarus. Subaru seem to have lost their way in the UK but are doing well in the US and Australia.

Maybe a topic for another thread.

*cough*

They are making sure that it's fixed before they give you it back... because all vag dealers have a first time fix target and if it comes back it's called a return to workshop and they are judged by the powers that be on this issue. So sit tight . Nobody wants a 6 week car back that's not fixed.

My colleague had his VRS go into limp home mode randomly out of the blue. He was not a happy chappy as he expected bulletproof reliability with a new car. Funny thing was, it wasn't a fault that could have been avoided, some little squirrel rodent type creatures had chewed a load of pipes under his bonnet so it wasn't the cars fault. **** happens, sensors die young or live long, it's a lottery as to what goes wrong if at all.

I reckon the dealer is being extra cautious as they hadn't thought of your distance away in there initial assessment. Then they a moment of clarity and thought that if you broke down on your way home you would scream blue murder. One lapse causes you some strife, That's life and be thankful for it as you wouldn't want to break down again now would you?

Seriously to me sounds like they actually care about getting the fault fixed and not trying to mess you about. It's not their fault your nearest dealer is 2 hours away. They didn't build the car did they...

Dealers can rightly get a lot of stick but at least wait till its deserved.

Yep - me too.  I loved my P1.  The bug eye (2001-ish) was where they went very wrong.  Newer ones are less fugly but they lost a lot of their market share in the meantime.

I think they did for a while. Some of the more recent WRX Impreza have looked better but they are quite expensive now in STI Trim. I do too many miles now for their fu l economy. I rarely saw more than 23mpg no matter how gently I drove!

Any if memory serves, they never did break down. But then neither have any of my other cars. (Touching wood again)

Unfortunately you want the dealer to keep you informed, but the more detail you know about what they're doing the more you have to worry about.

Take it in, use the loan car, get it back when its done, Don't waste today worrying about tomorrow.

My STI IV cost just over £18k new as a personal import back when standard UK Scoobs were £21k. Apart from two clutches and lots of tyres (due to lots of track days, heavy mods and lots of abuse) it never let me down. I loved that car, lots of character and it sounded like half a spitfire.

I sold it in a moment of foolishness so that my girlfriend could have the car of her dreams (a brand new 2001 VW Beetle). Now that was a crap car. Worst decision of my life by far.

So I got the car back about midday. It was valeted and ready to collect when I arrived.

They said that they'd replenished the fuel that was used while 'testing'. When I checked, they hadn't, so I had to wait while someone took it to the petrol station. I reckon I should have pushed them for fuel to cover my 2hr drive each way to collect the car.

It was a boost sensor fault apparently.

Out of interest, what do you think an appropriate mileage to test the sensor would be?

50,000 ?

It all depends on the fault the vehicles has,id rather they do 50 miles & find its all fixed than do a quick 2 mile roadtest & then i find after driving it 10 miles home that the faults back. When i had my mk2 in for a warranty repair i wouldnt expect them to cover my fuel for driving it to them, but my dealer is only 10 miles away & they either fixed it while i waited or gave me a loan car. Sadly its not the dealers or skodas fault that you bought a car from them & you live 2 hours away from the dealer.  The main thing is hopefully its all fixed & you can get back to enjoying your new car,as the miles go up your faith should be restored....if you not happy with it im happy to swap my mk2 vrs for your mk3.  :D

I agree, and would think that 50 miles would be ample.

But they covered 220 miles. I think thats excessive.

That is a lot of miles for a extended test drive,i wonder where the staff member lives that took it home overnight. id make sure you have paperwork stating the dates they had it(in case you get a letter in the post informing you of a speeding ticket on the vehicle).I wouldnt be happy with that amount of miles for a test drive just for a faulty sensor. 50 yes....220...no! they should really have filled the tank for you when you picked it up.

As I mentioned previously, they felt the need to take it home overnight not once but twice. And I had to go back in to tell them they hadn't replenished the fuel they'd used after they told me they had. I never noticed at that point the mileage they'd covered.

The service guy did seem nervous when he said Skoda might call me. I hope they do.

That is totally unacceptable the mileage they covered, i would not be happy either, seems skodas have a lot of silly faults seems like cheap crap parts and over priced to boot.

The amount of cars they build seem to get worse, i had a mk1 4 yrs trouble free till written off, bought the mk2 what a big let down next car will not be a vw group car of any sort.

When my Fabia started having issues (recovered on a bank holiday weekend while dealer shut etc etc) they rank me to do an extended road test... They said you can either collect it and do it yourself (meaning I lost time) or they would send it home with the service manager... I raised the concern of it being tagged about but I was more than happy with their response that the 50 something year old manager didn't do driving quick I was happy... They covered about 200 miles but I expected more tbh... And the car was given back to me in a better condition than delivered...
