 It doesn't matter how you drive with this engine you will never get a decent mpg. It's just totally appalling period.

I have to disagree with you here. I regularly achieve 52-57 MPG on the long term readout, which is 45-50 in real world terms. Maybe I just have a good little egg!

Just returned from an 80 mile roundtrip on A roads with two people therein and got an indicated 64 mpg in a 1.2 TSI 85PS Rapid.Quite pleased with that.

My mom and dad have just put a deposit down on a 1.2 TSI SE 86, So we'll see how they get on compared to my 1.2 TSI 105.

I've got the 86 and i get absolutely amazing mpg all the time just did a 300 mile round trip from one side of the country to the other and I wasnt going particularly slow just a tick over 70 all the way pretty much with some traffic. When I ended my journey I was seeing 58.9mpg average over 300 miles and again im on track for a 600+ mile tank. I dont have to granny it or drive slowly everywhere I just drive normally. God knows what VW did to the 105 that makes it so bad? I cant understand it?

It doesn't matter which car its in the 105 is a drinker.  

 

Just saw an old AutoExpress roadtest (2013) of the Leon 1.2 TSi 105 6M.

 

On test it did 41 mpg versus the official combined of about 55 mpg.

 

AutoExpress didn't really comment much beyond saying it was "fairly economical" in their summary. 

 

How much do VAG pay them?

I briefly drove a Rapid 85PS as a courtesy car whilst my Fabia was getting a few minor problems sorted out and have to admit it seemed very nippy considering the size of car it was moving. Whilst the 105PS sounds a bit heavy on fuel its still on par with the old 1.2HTP in my Fabia! Remember the latest one litre turbos' in most Fords and Vauxhalls claiming 60+MPG are struggling to get low 40's in real life.....

Those videos above not only show a stock Rapid dyno run at 10bhp over VW claims, but also a 0-123mph run, a downhill speedo reading of 140mph(GPS136), and a stonking 9:17 lap of the full Nurburgring (with some delays):

 

It really is Rapid if you thrash it - just ask @Stormchaser  :)

I wonder how the 86 compares in similar circumstances? I must say my Rapid feels like an absolute rocket ship compared to my 1.4 Astra H, despite having 4bhp less on paper. It has 26lb-ft more torques mind you, and weighs a whopping 135kg less, which has got to help with acceleration (1.5 seconds faster to 60 on paper). I just feels so eager once the boost kicks in. I've been able to embarrass many 'superior' cars in my humble Spaceback :D

 

I'm so glad I picked it over a 1.4 i30. Despite having a whole 12 bhp more than the Rapid, the Hyundai is as slow as the Astra 'cos it's such a porker! I would say weight is a big factor behind the Rapid's performance. My Spaceback only weighs 60kg more than my wife's Fiat Panda. 

Just found a video of a Golf 7 with the 1.2 86 doing a dyno run. The recorded figures convert to 90 bhp and 135 ft lb of torque. That's more torque than the 105 officially puts out (although less than the 105 tested in camelspyyder's link).

It looks as though the Spaceback is a tiny bit lighter than the regular Rapid, although presumably all of that weight has been lost from the rear.

I think you're right. The hatchback is heavy that's why it feels like a slug from take off and the Spaceback is much quicker and also handles better. I've had mine sideways a few times as it's broken away under stress. Spaceback doesn't do this. Too much overhang on the hatchback.

It is heavier.  A whole 5kg between the SE105 Hatch and the SE 105 Space.

 

I think it's certainly boost limited in 1st and maybe 2nd which does make the initial pickup seem slow.

 

My (not missed at all) turbo diesel FIAT seemed like a rocket ship in 3rd, but only because it was restriced in the lower gears to give the clutch a chance of a long life.

Yes 1st is very brief to the red line as is 2nd,but there's a lot of torque in 2nd giving you a good speed. It seems that the engine has to be over 2000rpm to get full boost to get you moving.

Between 4000 & 6000 rpm there is a lot of power. Just a shame it cuts out dead at 6K. I'm sure a very good remap would sort all these problems out :)

It's a very restricted engine capable of way more.

Just done a calculated 39mpg for this week. Mix of A roads and town driving with quite a bit "Nurburgring Style" driving off public roads :)

Bit of a mpg update. Filled up this evening (full tank to full tank), 476 miles and 42.2 mpg. This tank consisted almost entirely of short local road runs between home and a tube station 7 miles away (and back again) as part of my daily commute to and from work.

This is a slight improvement over the precious tank (same journey pattern), which delivered 468 miles and 40.52 mpg.

This is to be expected given the driving format, so I'm not particularly worried about it.

Bit of a mpg update. Filled up this evening (full tank to full tank), 476 miles and 42.2 mpg. This tank consisted almost entirely of short local road runs between home and a tube station 7 miles away (and back again) as part of my daily commute to and from work.

This is a slight improvement over the precious tank (same journey pattern), which delivered 468 miles and 40.52 mpg.

This is to be expected given the driving format, so I'm not particularly worried about it.

 

And you are porbably not pumping vast amounts of poisonous NO and PMs if you had chosen the TDI option, good over all result if the driving conditions.

No photo but I got (a fully warmed up engine) down to 6.7 mpg pulling away from a junction today - and I wasn't gunning it.

 

Sorry for bringing up an "oldish" thread up again, but I get the same on my Fabia III 1.2 TSI 110... Like, right when I drive off from a stoplight it momentarily jumps to 40.5 l/100km, which equals about 7 mpg and it really makes one cringe. And I have a pretty light foot and shift at around 2k rpm (or slightly less), but it happens regardless! Apparently it's a "feature" of these small turbos - the biggest mpg killer, it seems.

Is that from the real-time display? If so, don't worry about it - the MPG data it displays is meaningless and fluctuates so violently as it is indeed real-time. The only MPG data of any value from Maxidot is average consumption 2, read tank-to-tank.

Yes, of course the real-time display, but still scary when you see it... :)

In Fabia III real-time consumption is labeled on Maxi dot simply as "Consumption", while the other one is labeled "Avg. Consumption Since Start".

For avg. consumption since refuelling, though, you need to check Bolero as far as I know. So far I'm doing 5.3l/100km, which is cca. 53.5 mpg.
