Skoda Superb II Heater Problems

Featured Replies

Hi

I have been having problems with my heater lately in my Superb II 2.0tdi 170 Elegance. Sometimes it works normally and then sometimes it develops a fault whereby it will only give max cold or max hot with luke warm for any setting in between. Even on max the temperature is not really hot.

Reading the threads here its possible it could be a flap motor. When I took it to a dealer they said yes it was as I had described and they had tried to reset but this had not worked. They then said there were no fault codes so I had to pay a further £200 in diagnostics to strip out the dash.

When I got home I tried a re-calibration of the flap motor but could not be sure it was doing anything. I pressed the AC and Max Screen button together which put the blower running a about its mid setting with the AC and Max Vent LED flashing. Stayed like this for around 20mins at which point I stopped it by pushing the AC button.

I did not think anything had fixed but later in the week when driving about it seemed to be working OK again and stayed that way for about a week.

Today however, when I drove the car from cold, outside temperature was 10 degrees. I noticed that the temperature needle took an age to get up to half way much longer than normal. For quite a long time it stayed only at a quarter and sometimes dropped back a little from a quarter when idling. When it did finally get up to half it then kept dropping back to just under half. This might be coincidental but now the heater is only blowing max cold and max hot with luke warm in between again.

This got me thinking that as I can get max cold and max hot in the cabin there must be heat getting in there somewhere its unlikely to be heater matrix or even flap motors. When I was 17 I had a 2.8 Ford Granada and once the thermostat failed open and the car would not get hot inside. I remember I had to put a bit of cardboard in front of the radiator to get it warm in the cabin.

Could this be the problem I have here i.e. a thermostat sticking?

Would this give the symptoms I have with the heater?

If I had a sticking thermostat would it still show a needle reading of half but still be faulty?

This might explain why it worked one day and then stopped again a week later.

A new thermostat would be cheaper that £200 of diagnostics with no guarantee of a fix.

This car is causing me much grief and I am beginning to think its time to get shot.

With winter coming I drive 200 miles to work and back so need this working but cannot afford to keep shelling out for diagnostics which give no guarantee the problem is with the heater itself.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi its a little like the post you point to but not identical. I have had this heater issue on and off for about a year. sometimes it seems to fix itself and the thing works fine. Then for no obvious reason it goes wrong. Only yesterday had I noticed the temperture. It may have been like this on the other occasions too but I had not been looking. However, the needle eventually got to halfway but heater was still blowing max cold or hot and Lukewarm in between. Even max hot is not 30 plus degrees in cabin. l have seen posts linking this problem to the DsG box which mine has. I have also seen this linked to Radiator thermostat and the flap motors. can someone explain how many thermostats this car has and what  they do plus the Symptoms if the thing is faulty?

Hi, the other thread is mine.

It sounds to me like the problem I had. Sometimes mine did heat a little but not much. And my temperature sensor would eventually get up to 90, but only if the engine was working. As soon as I was driving downhill it fell back to 50.

The oil temperature would also be very low.

As far as I know there are to thermostats in these models. One for the engine and for the DSG. The last one is for cooling the oil in the very complex DSG gearbox.

I think, I have the same problem as this.

Yesterday I couldnt get the engine temp over 80 degrees and it was -6C degrees outside.

A week ago i drove 100km and everything looked fine on the road when i was driving 80km/h. But when I came to the city driving 50km/h the temp dropped to about 75degrees. Is this normal shouldnt i always stay around 90km/h.

I got the same problem whit the heating only cold and hot air no bettwen.

Did you find a solution?

@Tamas That thread was 2014 but there are plenty of recent threads that will help if you search.

DSG thermostats seem to cause this issue , of course it could be the main thermos too.
