I got my hands on our car a couple of days ago, and I'm just getting started exploring all the connectivity. Just started to check out SmartGate today and noticed Skoda has introduced quite a few more

I did, but I don't expect delivery until April. And it's in the configurator and the price list on the Finnish Skoda site.

EI9      SmartGate      Price before taxes:      95€         (Not available with the Active* spec or the RS with Extreme pack [WPU].

* Active spec is sold as S spec in the UK.

Anyone else notice the price increases on the configurator now? Its been down for a few days for updates. I knew it was coming but am amazed they increased the cost of the winter pack so much - think its £600 now, £170 more than last year! And one can't add a spare wheel.. Still no Smartgate option either.

Columbus also increased by 25% to £1,000 on Elegance and L&K models!  I spec'd up an Elegance and an L&K with the same toys, and the L&K is now over £500 cheaper like for like and there are still other things standard on the L&K that you don't get the option to spec on an Eleg, makes the L&K even more appealing!

  • 2 weeks later...

The Norwegian configurator have smartgate came up as an option on octavia , but no price on it. tried on the German configurator and Therese it cost 130 euros .

Have ordered my car now, and the seller should investegate about it , because he did not get it up in his list when option was added.

I hope i can get it in my var.

Anyone know whether Smartgate can be retro fitted and what woud be involved exactly? I know what Smartgate is in terms of function but what is it in a physical sense? Hardware? Software? Combination?

Combination, plus the elusive SWaP code. (license key).

So can it be retro fitted?

Only the dealer can sell you the swap code

I am about to order a Octy.

What is this smartgate thingy?

I tried to find more info on the skoda pages, but the info was not that good.

But most importantly, do I want it?

I might add that I like gadgets.

It allows for your car and smartphone to connect. It's such a new option that we don't know exactly what kind of functionality is possible, but the apps that are out so far allow you to read trip computer info and such via your smartphone.

I'm hoping it'll gain more functionality in time. Like setting the auxiliary heating timer via an app etc, as is possible with some other cars...but we don't have any information suggesting that so far.

Newbie here. Ordered an Octavia Business Greenline 3 a couple of weeks ago. Just getting my head around all this tech - blimey. I've ordered a Mitsumi Apple kit, but is it right that the new Amundsen makes this redundant? Would my car have the new generation Amundsen (expecting delivery in April)? Is that new version going to have CarPlay eventually as well as MirrorLink do you think? Where does Smart Gate fit in? Can I ask any more questions in my first paragraph?

I have an iPhone, the wife an Android - would be good to have something that works well with both. Getting Google Maps on the display would be ace.

Incidentally, I also ordered Bluetooth+, but then a day later was told that the Business Greenline now has that as standard. No mention of that online on the Skoda website, but obviously good news for me.

I doubt it get the possibility to remote start aux heating and such. For that the car would need its own sim-card, like Volvo has.

And BMW and Audi and MANY other cars now have. Lack of SIM is something Skoda need to catch up with.

That would be better of course, but I'd settle for Wi-Fi range for starters.

Audi & BMW are a different class to Skoda but the main problem is that Skoda is part of VAG.

When they have new technology, new engines, new features, they will first be offered to Audi, then later to VW, then later to Skoda/Seat.

The Octavia, Fabia, Yeti range is very very good & so they have to have some kind of product differentiation otherwise no-one would by a VW.

Yea, but this tech has been in Audi's for 5+ years... Which means it should be available across the board by now by your logic.

And oddly the Skoda tech is better than Audi in various other ways, I don't see tech with the VAG group as hand me downs Audi>>>>>>>Seat/Skoda. I see that they just create lots of options but not 1 car with them all, so you always want to upgrade every few years!

To answer one of my own questions (do feel free to answer others) - the dealer said that the Amundsen 2ndGen has gone in the Yeti from early this month.  Dates on other models currently unknown but "I might get lucky" (I suspect I won't), though there will be a price increase for the new version.  Sadly there appears to be no way to request / upgrade the newer version before it happens as part of the natural order of things.

It's all a bit odd really.  There's a significant difference between the two - there's no CD player in the new one, which I'm delighted about but for some folks might be a very big deal.  Then there's the larger screen, Mirrorlink (and forthcoming CarPlay?, 2x CPU speed, Apple integration into the USB socket....)

That would be better of course, but I'd settle for Wi-Fi range for starters.

It would be nice, but it is question about power consumption and wifi range. The aux heater remote has 1 km range How much the built-in access point need power continually the reach the same (it doesn't work inside buildings)? The SmartGate is now from the car to the phone only and when the car is powered.

Wi-Fi could never reach those distances, but it could give you the option of setting the timer instead of just turning it on or of. I'd be perfectly happy if I could set the timer from inside while my car is parked outside.

I was just reading the new section, regarding SmartGate, in the manual; and stumbled upon something I find slightly worrying in terms of security.

The standard password for the cars Wi-Fi network is the cars VIN number...but isn't that visible in the windscreen? And doesn't that mean that just about anyone who feels like it can log in and even change the password to anything they like?  :|

It does say the ignition needs to be on though. Presumably a nasty passenger couldn't read the vin if they were in the car with the ignition on. Not fool proof, but should mitigate most malicious things as few people would have the key and be able to read the vin without you noticing.

A wise man would change the password as soon as he got the car though.

They could make note of the VIN number and just stand close by while the driver prepares to drive away. It's not a long window, but still... Couldn't they just have used a random password like most new Wi-Fi routers? (Rhetorical question.)

My Octavia has a Webasto that heats both engine and interior which does indeed have its own sim. Had the dealer install it.

Best feature I have ever had in a car.

The manual tells you how to change the password though, so surely that would be the first thing you do when you get the car, to your own password, so there is no more issue?

It's no issue for those who realize they should change it. But it's still not a very good excuse to set an insecure factory password...
