Windows 8.1 Tablet

Featured Replies

I quite liked the look of the Surface 3 but it was quite expensive so have been looking around for something to replace by ever slowing Nexus7. I spotted the Linx 7 tablet but thought it was too small even at £50(with a £30 tradein).I then noticed that you can a 8 and 10inch version. I decided to buy the 10 model for two reasons the bigger screen and that it has 2gb of ram. It arrived today and so far I'm very impressed. Does most things a tablet can do and most things a windows pc can do. It was £169 with a detachable keyboard not including a £50 tradein.

For the money it seems very good, the quad core atom processor seems to cope well, it has mini HDMI, usb port, micro sd card slot and a separate charging socket. the bundled keyboard attaches via magnets and connects well. The keyboard isn't the best but perfectly usable. Not sure on the battery usage but so far its seems ok.

Haven't seen any review of them yet but they are tempting.

Would be interested to know how it gets on streaming media from iPlayer.

I forgot it comes with a years subscription to office 365 as well. I haven't tried the iplayer stream yet but you can download them. Netflix works well (but then it always seems to whatever you run it on) .Blinkbox streams but as it is really a pc in tablet form you can download films for off-line viewing. USB port works with external hdrives. Having trouble with the trade in website (serial no not recognised). But other than that its quite good. Only thing I've noticed is that odd is the softkeyboard has the numeric keypad is the wrong way up (ie like a telephone rather than a pc / calculator). The CPU seems to cope well but it does get warmer that the nexus 7 when its being pushed. I've also installed Steam but the two games that I installed (x-tension and return to castle Wildenstein) don't run but I think that's down to win 8.

Still awaiting the OTA update for both my Nexus devices.

I understand the way Google role them out, but we're still in lottery mode getting updates.

just an update on this,  It has a few of annoyances:-

1. if the battery is discharged it has to recharge for sometime before it will power on.

2. The case/keyboard is good but doesn't stop the the tablet turning on from sleep, so it powers up on it's own. solution is to turn it off if being transported, (Good thing is doesn't take long to boot)

3. Old games will not run without a keyboard attached (neither will DOSBox).

4. Can't get sound out of the HDMI cable - probably a setup issue - Picture works fine.

Good things: have 13 months of Office 365 (i month trial + 12 months with tablet). much more flexible  than either the Ipad or Nexus but more complicated to operate. Still learning the 945 ways to do anything. Seems to have USB 3.0. WiFi good.and picks up a strong signal. streaming seems fine (Netflix, 4OD and iplayer are fine,). remote desktop connection is easy as well.

Might investigate one for myself in the new year.

alternative would be to save up for a Dell outlet Venue pro 11.

We've got them at work and they're pretty handy.

This works just need to plug it all together in the right order.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sainsburys was selling the Linx 10 tablet when I was in yesterday (£149 but no cash back offer) and I had a little play of the display model.

I was surprised how zippy it was. No lag at all on the OS screen much snappier than my newly borked upgraded Nexus 7. Obv not an extensive test.

It was crashed/locked when I got to it but I was able to reboot it in about 30sec. My Nexus takes about 3min to get going now. Slower than my 10yr old SSD equipped laptop.

£149 is probably the best price I've seen for people without a trade in. TBH the trade in seems pretty restrictive and I doubt most people would be willing to lose a decent tab for £50.

Build quality seemed ok, maybe not on a par with the Nexus but not bad.

it is far more flexible than the Nexus being a full 8.1 (although 32bit) windows build.  The sleep mode doesn't work properly as it keeps waking itself up. But as Aspman said it takes a few seconds to turn off and a few seconds to start up.  Was running Trackmania on it yesterday fine, (keyboard attached) Now I've got used to Win 8.1 I think it is much better for me than the Nexus was.  Nexus is off to be traded in for £50,  it was getting so slow....

I think I'll get one come the new year either that or a refurb Dell Venue 11 i3.

I don't want to trade in the Nexus. I'll probably root it and configure it for the wee man.

I thought about it , but daughter has already got an Android tablet  and we have an Ipad in the house.  I have far too many other computery (if that's a word) bits around the house  (3 laptops, 3 desktops, 2 raspberry pis and several other vintage bit and bobs.) and it would probably end up in a drawer!

  • 1 month later...

I'm still tempted by these to go with my Windows Phone (Lumia) but undecided on the 8" or 10" version.

I will be trading in my BB Playbook (which was fine whilst I had a BB!)

Could go up to around £100 so could get the 10" version with £50 cash back.

I'm saving my partner points on Novatech to get one of the 8 inch ones - swmbo won't let me just buy one and I can't really get away with one out of the business...

Tesco had their own 7" Win Tab down to £59 over the holidays. I guess it'll go down to that again in time. Did feel a bit cheap but then it is.

I'm going to save my pennies and get a refurb Dell Venue 11 i5 with a 128Gb SSD ~£270.

After a month of using the Linx 10, I say it's quite good but not brilliant,  In sleep mode it doesn't sleep very deeply and wakes up especially if in the Keyboard case and drains it's battery - so I tend to turn it off when not in use. (takes a few seconds to boot - so a minor annoyance,)   Has on a couple of occasions forgotten it has a touch screen - reboot fixes this as well and finally the wireless has gone awol a couple of times (disable and enable card fixes this).  BUT it does do a lot more than a tablet, full Microsoft Office, full web browsers and runs some old games (need to have a keyboard attached or they don't work). The build quality isn't no where near the Ipad (or Nexus) but battery life seems OK.

The annoyances make it a bit hard to recommend to a novice and I've kept the Nexus 7 as well.  :D I just couldn't get rid of it for £50.

Thanks for the update.

My BB Playbook was fine whilst I had the BB phone, they sync'd together etc but now I have the Windows Phone, the BB is redundant. Furthermore, it's no longer really supported by BB with no known software updates on the horizon. The kids have their own Nexus tablets and OH has an Amazon Fire. It's generally only for browsing etc, and the times when I need to quickly update work files and can't be bothered to boot up my (work) laptop - the Office 365 will be of obvious benefit here.

Windows 8 works great on the phone and so I should be OK with it on the tablet. I've tried Windows 8 on a new laptop and really don't like it.

Swmbo has given me permission now after much nagging at her so 8 inch has been ordered to be here on Thursday. Also got one of those cases off ebay with the keyboard (cabled, not bluetooth) ordered.

Looking forward to it - gonna be an awesome machine for the GOG library!

Now set up and using it - typing this on the keyboard case attached to it.

Impressed so far -plays mkv files no issues, teramviewer works a treat.

Now onto gog.com!

Taken a punt with a 10, waiting for it to arrive.

Anything I need to be aware of do you think?

Make sure you get a USB OTG cable as well - I've found that a few legacy apps (mostly games to be fair) won't work without a mouse connected.

Other than that I think it's am awesome bit of kit - I've now ordered a 64gb micro-sd card to go in it as well. Not that space is an issue yet but I've got a feeling it won't take too long to fill up...
