Use of parking heater

Recommended Posts

Can anyone (from the Nordics?) tell me how they use the Webasto parking heater?

When you park for the evening, what settings do you set the Climatronic at? Do you leave everything at Auto or do you set it to blow only on the front glass (windscreen?)? Do you set it at higher temperature than normal etc?

I am not using Auto mode. I mannualy set blower to windows or both windows and legs. And thats all. It appears that system automatically chooses speed of blower (even if I leave it at one, I find it blowing at 4 or 5 depending how cold it is outside). The temperature is allways 22, does not matter what I have left in the evening.

I am allways activating it with remote.

Now when it is -10 in the morning 15 min is enought to have it warm.

I wish this feature was available in the UK.

A fully defrosted windscreen and warm interior is appealing!

A system to warm the oil for easier starting and reduced engine wear would be a bonus too :D

As the coolant is quite warm, around 60°, when you start the engine, you will get the engine block and oil up to temperature pretty fast when using the Webasto heater.
It's also really useful when outside temperature drops below -20° as the waste heat from the engine at normal cruising speed isn't enough to heat the interior.

For this winter I'm planning on adding a Thermo Call 3 GSM remote module to my Webasto.

It seems to be plug-and-play using the VAG adapter cable. Has anyone on the forum added a TC3 to their Superb?

I also wish this was available in the UK.  Virtually all large trucks have it available as an option here, but why its rarely available on cars is baffling.  When I drove trucks it was just so nice to jump in the cab to a nice toasty driving position and an engine that was warm and ready for work.

I don't understand whether don't offer it as an option. I have one on my Rover and love it, though tend not to use the Rover so much as I don't have winter tyres for it, and its not 4x4 like my Superb.

I don't know if you can use a T100HTM tele start on the Skodas, but you can tell it what time you want to leave and it works out how soon to start it depending on the temperature.

Have just fitted aftermarket Webasto Thermo Top V 5kW with TC-3 GSM module. No integration with Maxidot, starts/stops by SMS or cellular call. To make things slightly prettier, one may install an Android app like Webasto Thermo Control or other (having iOS version).

Always switching to windscreen when leaving a car, though this seems improper "automation" - forgetting donig this sometimes.

I'm interested in this too.

I've been researching it quite a bit, seems there are 2 ways of going about this.

1. You get a full aftermarket kit, either the Top C or the Evo 5. Then you need a remote of your choice (keyfob, advanced keyfob, clock or tele app). A specific Skoda Superb kit for mounting the system. The IPCU unit for the climatronic. Additional hoses and things from Skoda.

Price = 2.200 EUR mounted by Webasto specialist. Other quotes are 2.299 EUR, or 2.300 EUR. This has no integration with the car, AFAIK.

2. You get this kit from skoda-parts;

http://skoda-parts.cz/predmet.aspx?polozkaID=272

This seems to have the clima panel and a unit for OEM integration, you would still need the mounting kit/hoses and things from Skoda to get it to work. AND someone to install it...AND the integration has to work with your car...

As added protection you could install the DEFA Multicharger 1204 kit, so you're sure when you run the heater you don't end up with a warm car and a flat battery in the morning...

http://www.defa.com/en/automotive/warmup/products/battery_chargers/chargerkit_1204/

Still undecided...I would like this, I don't think the OEM integration is something I really need. And the install is too technical to do myself, so looks like the only way to get the Webasto is spending alot of money...

Those with Webastos here, are you still happy with it? Worth the money? Is it only usefull for 10 days in snowy weather, or do you use it year-round? Is the ventilation feature usefull in summer?

The Webasto will not empty the battery. You will always have enough power to start the car.

I've just started using it for the winter. About 3 degrees celsius and below. Start heating 20 minutes before driving.

Love it

Sorry to dig up an old topic, but the threshold voltage set by Webasto is to low, so I have more than once entered a toasty warm car with the parking heater running happily, only to find that everything went dead when I turned the key to start the engine and had to get a helper with jumper cables.

I have played with the idea of using a battery protection device meant for electric coolers, which tend to have a more conservati threshold voltage.

I have also managed to drain the car battery using the Webasto heater by repeatedly running the heater for a longer period than the duration of the following drive. The Webasto manual states that you should drive the car for at least as long as you had the heater on, in order to recharge the battery.

In the middle of the winter when I run the Webasto 2 x 30 min per day, and drive the car for 2 x 25 min, I now use a mains charger to top up the battery during the weekend and I have not had any problems the last three years. I have a CTEK charger with a quick connector and have installed the corresponding connector in both my cars (and my motorcycle), so connecting the charger is really easy.

With my previous Superb Combi there was a misunderstanding when I ordered the car and I got a car without Webasto heater. After looking at several possibilities I ordered a Superb specific mounting kit for a Thermo Top C, a generic mounting kit for a Thermo Top V, some original Skoda heater brackets and a Thermo Top V heater and managed to cobble it all together for a fully functional heater installation. There was no maxi-dot integration - just a standard Webasto 1533 timer to control the heater. I took me a while to get it all working as I am no mechanic - just stubborn...

In my latest Superb I have the factory installed heater with maxi-dot integration and key fob remote. Last winter I added the TC3 GSM remote and it was really simple to install with the VAG adapter cable - just plug and play.
