Where next?

Featured Replies

Got my first remap from Shark Performance via e-mail after their Black Friday deal and uploaded using the STS unit over the weekend.

First impressions are good, the power delivery is now smooth and it pulls all through the rev range as far as I have taken it.

The car is totally standard other than this, but I'm not sure if I think the car is quick enough yet? :D

So, where do I go from here? Is it a case of just buying another turbo? From reading here that would really need bigger brakes, uprated clutch/gearbox and of course another remap.

Are exhausts are worthwhile mod here?

Questions, questions....

Decat also helps a lot. They're quite restrictive. I certainly noticed the difference.

Do you know what gains individually would be had from the decat?

I'd probably do this with other mods otherwise I would be spending out on another remap straight away after just having it done, unless there is no need to?

Could I get away with just a bigger turbo? I see so many different ones, is there a "middle ground" to head for in terms of cost and power?

The standard exhaust system is good for about 220bhp as far as I know, so the best bang for buck without going too daft would be a PD150 turbo and map tweak. Sensible torque levels would mean you'd be able to retain your standard clutch. That said, you'd still be looking at a fair few hundred quid for another 25bhp ish.

Sounds reasonable enough, but like mentioned I'm not sure that another 25hp (presuming that is from 170ish to 190ish?) would be enough.

I didn't read the bit that said another 25bhp wouldn't be enough. It's all down to your budget. The GTB turbos are the popular route for bigger power at the moment. If you're after 250+ bhp you'll need an uprated clutch, bigger turbo, exhaust system, custom remap, potentially injectors and other items like brakes and suspension to handle it all. If that's what you're after you'd be looking at £2k+ even on a budget.

I added that afterwards, just trying to gauge my options really. I love the car but if it's a case of spending £2-3k to get big gains I'll stick with the little ones if it means I should be able to hang on to most of the stock parts.

I'll keep an eye out for a PD150 turbo for the short term.

Pretty sure the given figure is around 170bhp, but I haven't had it dyno'd to check.

It was easy as pie to do, just plug the unit into a PC to choose the car, plug into the car to get the orginal map and send it off to they guys at Shark. They send you the new maps and you plug into the car to upload them and that is it.

It seems good so far, only been a couple of days but impressive. Power is smooth and no big torque spikes like previous and the pull is consistent through the rev range.

So is it more fun to drive now post remap?

Without question it is much more fun post remap.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! Think ill be looking at getting the STS system after xmas then. But 1st, Need to sort the boost hoses lol. Standard

Would people look to get a second hand PD150 turbo or would it be better to get a new one?

Have been looking at the turbo that xman750 can supply.

Get that one then, it'll work well, don't buy secondhand turbos for performance, it makes you sound retarded and I feel bad just for having to tell you that. DUH!

plus a diff no good having it if you can't get it down...

Agreed, that's what I meant by other items.

That's a long list of items, short term I'll look to the small (25ish bhp) upgrade and then see where we go from there.

It depends how much you want to spend and what your end goal is in fairness. One of the reasons I've held off modifying my Fabia is that you have to spend a lot to make them comparable to a hot hatch in terms of handling and power. Your not starting with the same base so for me it will always be a compromise. Now I'm not saying you can't make them quick because I know you can but for me I don't think what it costs to get there is worth the outlay and you really do need a diff to get the power down properly in these and an uprated clutch/flywheel if running upwards of 300lb-ft, your standard one will likely shat itself after a while with big power put through it.

Totally agree from what I have read so far, my main goal was maximum power with minimum spend initially.

Looks like I have nearly exhausted that with a couple more modifications, then it will be the decision if I want to spend £K's or plough that into something else. It 's a hard choice because I do love the look of the Fabia.

If your going to change the turbo I'd look at a GTB1756VK as they tend to have a bit more headroom than the hybrid PD150s. Darkside do a very good value kit which includes all the bits you need plus an oil change and mapping...

But to get the 220-230bhp out of the kit you'll likely need a FMIC, you maybe able to pick up a second hand one as they do come up from time to time.

How much did the shark Self Tuning System cost you, been on there site and it doesn't seem to say

A good shout with this, but I think I'd do just leaving it as is rather than spending £k's. May change my mind though. lol
