Power steering pump - Part number information(?)

Featured Replies

 Hello Briskodians!

I'm just seeking some final information about the power steering pump and i hope i can get some confirmation on the part number.

I have a Fabia 1.4 16V AUB 6Y2 Hatchback, year 2001, and my PAS-pump is totally fried, a lot of water had made it's way in and corroded the whole inside causing every warning light to go off in the dash. So, I'm getting an replacement, but sadly i can't afford a new pump so I'm thinking of ordering a second hand unit that looks fresh and have been tested and are in working order.

I have checked list, had conversations with different people regarding all the part numbers and what i got from it was; my pump - TRW 6Q0 423 155 AE and that 6Q0 423 156 (letter?) should work as an replacement. I have seen a lot of VW Polo (other models to) PAS-pumps on ebay with part number 6Q0 423 156 (AB)-(M)-(Q)-(S).

I had a conversation with a parts manager at Rainworth Skoda, and he was kind enough to shed some light on the confusing soup of part numbers.

I wanted to share this here in hope that this information can help someone in the future..

Basically they are all the same pump and the letters indicate later models with slight modifications to make them better. The other thing he said was that you can always go newer but never older.

The main question is will pump 6Q0 423 156 AB work on my car straight away?

Just to be sure i wanted to ask my fellow briskodians if anyone can confirm this, perhaps someone have additional information regarding the part numbers and if/when coding is needed? Do I have to consider if it will fit my steering rack and sensor in some way other than it has to be TRW

Thank you!

/Tim

i got a good second hand pump forsale as for replacing it you need to go in to the ecu and get the code out of your pump then put it in your new pump when fitted you need diagnostic equipment

Hi steveopc!

What part number and year is it, do you know? What are you asking for it? :)

I don't have a diagnostic tool yet, maybe i can get the help with that from a friend later on. Don't think i can get the coding from the old one (totally corroded and shorted out). The coding information should be retrievable some other way right?

When I changed my pump I just went for the main part number, it was off a polo too, pump itself was only a couple of months old. It needed no coding, just a swap and fill.

Thats really good information! I'm just curious what car/year do you have and what was the exact part number of the new pump (6Q0 423 156 AB?)

I got a reconditioned unit with 2 year warranty from GSF for just over £200 for mine. Tbh it just wasn't worth messing around with second hand units.

TRW pumps:

6Q0 423 156 Q for chassis numbers >> 6Y-3-830 644

6Q0 423 156 AB for chassis numbers 6Y-3-830 645 >> 6Y-4-929 644

6Q0 423 155 AE for chassis numbers 6Y-4-929 645 >>

Hope that helps.

Properly helpful that ^ .

Just to help anyone that isn't aware of how to make their VIN number look like one of those sequences sepulchrave has just quoted:

Take the nine numbers after the 'Y' of your VIN. Replace the first and third of those numbers with dashes, like this -

Compare what remains with the three ranges above.

Cool, that helped a lot! If i got this right it should be; my VIN: 6Y413182059 - after the calculated super decoding, 6Y-1-182 059 (?) 6Q0 423 156 Q for chassis numbers >> 6Y-3-830 644

That's correct.

Which means any of those three pumps listed will work just fine for you.

This forum is great!

Thank you guys, I'm super grateful for all the help! :)

The TRW power steering pump label has a part number, then a LHD System No and RHD System No - do these number have anything to do with the chassis sequences?

And do anyone know what "BS" and "AF" stands for? I'm just curious, it's nice to know the basics of stuff like this.  :nerd:

Example from eBay:

15.05.2007

6Q0 423 156 AB

LHD System No 6Q1 423 051 BS

RHD System No 6Q2 423 051 AF

The suffix doesn't stand for anything as such. Just letters to identify a different part.

If the third digit of the part number is a zero, it is a part that fits either LHD or RHD cars. The power steering pump itself in your example. If it's a 'handed' part or group of parts that is a mirror image depending on whether it's for LHD or RHD, the third digit will be 1 or 2 respectively. So the "LHD System No" and "RHD System No" are presumably the higher-level  - mirror image - assemblies that the pump is part of, depending on which country it is built for.

My hat's off to you both!  Thank you, this is good information when you are trying to sort a car out and searching for parts.

Sounds good!

So a total of £65 included shipping? Is it possible to see some pictures of the pump?

Doesn't help, 2001 is a changeover year, there'll be a sticker on the pump, easily visible behind the foglamp.

Easy way, if you can reach the fluid filler cap, is - if the green cap has vertical "grip" bars it will be TRW - and/or, take filler cap off and if its a TRW system, "TRW" will be moulded into the cap.
