Keith's 2015 Mega Hot Hatch Thread

Featured Replies

Didn't Autocar get some crazy performance figures out of a 330D a couple of years ago. Claiming it was all the car anyone could ever want or something. I think they hit 62 in mid or low 5 seconds, which isn't bad for their standard 6 cylinder diesel, plus the economy was in the high 40s. Mind you I see that Audi is now producing a fairly powerful 3.0TDi in the new A4 too. Everyone seems to be producing cars with around 450lb/ft or more in their standard 3.0 diesels these days, which is a win for the consumer in my book.  :)

  • You'd have to be a bit daft to think there won't be. Ford has (unlike other car makers) realised that loads of people remap and found a way to influence what people do to their cars. At least by off

  • This is my one, love the little beast.

  • Makes you wonder why so few makers do have an approved remap available. You'd think it would be better for VAG to be involved in a safe remap for it's products that just leave the door open to a mult

Not compared to his idea of the Golf estate..................the BMW 335D estate is only 450/1500lt boot space............Golf is 550/1600

Insurance on the BMW is 37-40 groups, Golf Alltrack with GTD engine is 20E & Golf R estate is group 34...................

A 335d touring and golf all track estate aren't even comparable imho. Sure the golf has a slightly bigger boot and may be a little bit cheaper to insure but I doubt most 335d buyers are concerned by such things. You buy the 335d for its performance. The golf would seem very slow indeed if you drove them back to back. The only version I would consider alongside the 335d as a potential purchase would be the R estate. :-)

Nice change of direction George!

Loving the JCW in that review vid.

A mate of mine is a mini salesman so I might have to tap him up for a test drive..... (I'm starting to sound like you now Keith aren't I? Lol!)

Hot Hatch thread and as much as we love the Saloons & Estates and Dirty Diesels there are threads covering them. (joking)

I love the new Mini Hatch and the 5 door, and the road in this Video,

but the car is a bit snug with the JCW Seats for everyday use.

Looking forward to seeing the New Clubmans launched on the 31st October.

There was the posts on the M135I and and what to have for the winter, for mountains etc AWD Hatch / Estates.

Well MINI / BMW do the Heliflump MINI's for that.

just come back from BMW (and that new car smell is everywhere :) ) and was looking at the Minis, mainly because I was blocked in by them. I really want to like them, but in the sportier versions, they just look too fussy for me. Almost like they are trying too hard. Bet they are a hoot to drive though :)

Quite a few colleagues now run BMWs with nothing more than Winter tyres and reckon they get about OK. Just need to plan your 'control inputs' a little more carefully. Obviously they aren't going to go where a FWD with winters could go, let alone a 4x4 with winters.

just come across this update about the new A45. 380 bhp or there about!!! 62 in 4.2 seconds, that's around 4 seconds dead to 60 in old money. Mental! These things are accelerating like supercars of less than 10 years ago.

Anyhoo here is a link Not sure it looks as good as it's forbear though.

Looking through the pics, it appears to have adjustable dampers. At last it might have suspension for older peeps like me  :)

Don't forget the ability in snow

On a completely off topic matter (it's about a hot hatch, sorry) , has anyone seen the new Honda R on the road, coz I haven't, or the new RS3 and I was next door to an Audi Garage a couple of times today, but not a sausage.

I did see a lovely new style W205 C63, wound my window down and gave the driver a friendly blip of my throttle to encourage him to do likewise ;) He smiled at me nicely and then, well, I think he won that one with a big thwapfrrpppwuffflebarkgurglepop

Actually watching this video again, I suddenly realised that Steve Sutcliffe manages to frequently use full throttle,  on a twisty, wet, icy, snowy, slippy road and doesn't manage to crash it once, unlike Mr Clonkson. Hmmmmm wonder why?

Jeremy Clarkson aquaplaned did he not, ?

as many manage to do with wide tyres on surface water which is rather different from giving it some on a wet cambered road and getting the tail out.

It was said he had the car in sport + so the ESP was probably deactivated, plus he might event be on worn run-flats. Either way, he can't drive anywhere near as well at Sutters and was kn0b for driving on heavy standing water with the throttle pinned to the carpet. next time little car, next time ;)

I should add that if a person can't drive a car in a straight line on a wet road they really shouldn't be driving. Perhaps the throttle got stuck under the floor mat  :D

I know that the Golf & 3 series BMW are aimed at different sectors, just you mentioned if you had to have one car the Golf R estate would do it or the 330d touring.

Golf estates with diesel & DSG:- GTD & Alltrack same engine 184PS 380nm, 0-62 in 7.9secs for GTD. 7.8 secs for Alltrack!!!

Golf R estate petrol & DSG 300PS 380nm, 0-62 in 5.1

Do a stage 1 map on the GTD or Alltrack & you have about 215PS & 489nm of torque!!!..........& faster 0-62, people on the mk7 forums have been getting very good results with the GTD, but it has problems putting the power/torque down, this is why the Alltrack with the 4wd is a bit of a "sleeper".........

The GTD & Alltrack have the same nm as the R & we all know that diesels drive differently to petrol's, but I recon a tuned alltrack might be capable of being as fast as an M135I for an all year "replacement vehicle". I know it has a "high" ride height but having tried to follow some mental over finch Defenders on the back roads & don't think it's that much of an issue, just get good suspension , or drive differently.........

As for fast diesels, one of my other mates has a 330d or 335d, can't remember, but 3lt & twin turbo & M suspension, very capable, he was going to get the Alpina tune/version, but his other half said no!..............bit of a bugger I was encouraging him as those are proper mental & sleeper, unless you get the big side stripes..............

As for the Minis, they are common up in in the 4wd versions even quite a few of the JCW versions................nice, but funny watch people trying to fit their big weekly shop in them................& the price tag!!..............

The mini is one fugly car, and that compared to the beemer which hasn't had many gifts from the beauty gods. You'd have to be a seriously deluded fanboi or gurl to want it, which pretty much sums the whole range up. Tbh it wouldn't matter about looks, it's all about that engine.

Yes, but put a stage one on the golf R and suddenly you have 500Nm and a lifetime supply of additional horsepower. The only drawback is fuel economy, but this is a thread about sports cars, so we shouldn't concern ourselves too much about that.

A friend of mine has the Cooper convertible and she is looking to swap it for the new version. I like it in soft top form, it doesn't rattle too much and is quite pretty, certainly more so than the other hatch convertibles, at least to my eyes (although the 2 series, which isn't a hatch of course, looks better as a soft top to me at least). If only Mini did what Mazda did with their MX5 did and made a smaller version in their mkIII :(

I expect any sighting of the Honda to be precluded by a 5 note repeated musical sequence, consisting of a root, major third, fifth, octave and if memory correct a 7th in there somewhere too....

500nm ?.........err no ....................using the same company for direct comparison golf R stage 1 is 344PS (circa) & 446 nm........................

As for fuel consumption, loads or people on the golf forums have chosen GTD, some moving from R because of the fuel economy..in this day in age we can have "performance & economy"...............GTD is not that slow

I wish you hadn't quoted him :( I don't see his posts unless you quote them.  :D

Anyhoo did you know if you bought a paddling pool and put 400kg of high explosives underneath it, you would be able to accelerate a whole family of 5 much faster than a Golf 148ps thingy and they could do it in their swim wear. Hth

Er yes. Would you like to see the dyno plot from mine?

My old diesel had 610nm. That was stock ;p

I'd consider a Golf R estate or 330d/335d as I previously indicated. The GTD or Alltrack I'm sure are nice enough cars but neither would remotely feature on my radar. Just too slow and boring. If I had to have a diseasel it would need to be 6-cyl :-)

Anyhoo back to the hot hatches.....

A couple of weeks ago I test drive an Abarth 595. Very disappointed. Ride far to hard and handling not up to par. Took out a fiesta ST afterwards and it was sublime. If I had to downsize to a supermini hot hatch then that Fez ST would get my vote!
