Keith's 2015 Mega Hot Hatch Thread

Featured Replies

The boot on the golf estate is lovely. The boot on the Golf R hatch isn't very good imho. I was really shocked how small/tight it was compared to our M135i. Same issue with the RS3 -really struggled to get our baby buggy in! I guess the 4x4 running gear really robs it of useful space. :-)

It is well known that VW have messed up with the calcs of the Golf MK7 hatch boot size, on paper it is bigger than the previous MK's..........BUT in reality it is smaller, my mates have MK6, MK5, MK4 & I Have put my climbing rucsacs etc in all of them & the Golf MK7 at the dealers.........the MK7 is way smaller................& that's the standard hatch. R just means you lose the spare wheel well as the rear axle/haldex sit in those positions, as that's the main floor pan difference.

Estate is 1ft longer after the rear axle so the spare wheel well does not interfere with the haldex/axle..............in fact I have a flipping huge space under the car for the 4wd gear!.....................

EDIT:_found the info I was looking for posted by user "ColinStone" on GolfMK7

My MkIV Golf 5 door has a brochure boot volume of 330 litres, the new MkVII brochure volume 360 litres. Both using the VDA method with the same blocks.

Both boots are the same width between wheel arches - 1030mm. Both are virtually the same height to under the parcel shelf. IV 530mm VII 540mm - floor lowered.

The depth, seat back rest to inside of rear sill, is considerably different. IV 840 - 560mm, VII 760 - 500mm. VII parcel shelf is noticeably shorter.

IV has a cubby hole left side, VII both sides.

Just calculating the volume of the basic trapezoid gives IV 382 ltrs, VII 350 ltrs.

Odd.

  • You'd have to be a bit daft to think there won't be. Ford has (unlike other car makers) realised that loads of people remap and found a way to influence what people do to their cars. At least by off

  • This is my one, love the little beast.

  • Makes you wonder why so few makers do have an approved remap available. You'd think it would be better for VAG to be involved in a safe remap for it's products that just leave the door open to a mult

I'll never forgive that M135 for not finishing the job :(  Maybe there was something wrong with it (certainly something wrong with the driver). Maybe next time :)

Don't know why you bother Tom. Those F1 cars are rubbish in snow too

Boot space is sh1te aswell. No good for a trip to Ikea :D

Don't forget the economy, it's pants too

A golf GTi on topgear, quite different from a golf R in real life. I've investigated the boot on the golf R hatch in person and can 100% confirm its not as good as that on the M135i. The VW has better rear legroom for sure but otherwise the M135i is the more practical car for us with our toddler. Same story with the RS3. I had to detach the side panel in the boot to get the (small) buggy to fit, and even then the parcel shelf wouldn't come all the way down. Not cool :-(

Hmmm, if only someone could fit a 4x4 system into that car and we could test it again. life is so cruel :(

Didn't you not use the 2/3 -1/3 rear seat facility Tom?

The split-fold rear seat? I suppose that would be an option! Seems abit naff and not very appealing to be driving around like that all the time with the buggy poking through into the cabin though.....

You always have the Fabia vRS Estate as an option or R Estate or BMW equivalent 2nd car option as now.

My R Hatch has carried 5adults with 3 travelling cases in the back with parcel shelf in place for a 200 mile trip with no discomfort felt.

One of the adults was a 6'3" male 15 st.

Returning 35 mpg on that occasion.

I have a 218 Active Eurobox today and it is huge with lots and lots of glass everywhere and super clever boot and back seat slidy thing. Does that mean it's the best car ever?

Fortunately only you can make that judgement call.

Perhaps you will be changing it for the M135i on your return

Who knows. It has more space and is probably better in snow and as we know, that's all that counts

We are lucky to have the Fabia estate, it's very handy. If we could only have one car though I think we'd struggle with a golf hatch. Would opt for the estate in that scenario.

335D estate, you know it makes sense :)

Some cracking prices on used very low mileage Octavia MK3 TSI Estates or ZERO % PCP on new or maybe a 230 TSI Limited Edition.

Bags of room for a "growing family"(?) Tom

Keith your obsession with price of cars is getting out of control!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always like to be helpful to members don't you?

Yes, but every time someone mentions a car, I don't feel compelled mention an alternative (Usually Golf related) product and then tell them about the second hand value of it, or the latest finance deals. I worked in car sales and I didn't quote as many figures in a week as you do in a day!

not trying to start a flame war, just I've noticed it seems to be becoming an obsession almost

Someone had to say it sooner or later.

Almost like a justification of why you'd buy a vehicle, just drive it, be happy with it,

Golf SV does all the above also...................BMW is trying to take VWs market by copying their cars, they even admitted that they need to get into these sectors!

Being better in snow DOES matter if you live in a place that has snow/ice for several months of the year, I though you knew that as that's why you have a Suzuki Vitara to drive in winter when you put the M135I to bed...............

335D estate, you know it makes sense :)

Not compared to his idea of the Golf estate..................the BMW 335D estate is only 450/1500lt boot space............Golf is 550/1600

Insurance on the BMW is 37-40 groups, Golf Alltrack with GTD engine is 20E & Golf R estate is group 34...................

No, but it qualifies as maybe the ugliest!!

It's not too bad from some angles :D The chap at the petrol station asked me if it was the A class! I said it was more of an upmarket Golf SV but with a nutty 3 cylinder engine. Actually it's OK. Bit like driving a family orientated greenhouse. The engine is quite sweet too, but on the motorway the tyre noise is very poor and the 1.5 would struggle on inclines with a full family on board. Nice interior though and probably a reasonably alternative from the SV I imagine. Oh, the 6 speed auto is mega smooth, which surprised me in a good way :)

No plans for the family to grow just yet tho (as far as I am aware lol)!

If I did have two kids then I think a Golf R estate would probably tick a lot of the boxes for us if we only had one car. It would be a toss up between that and the 335d touring I reckon. Or maybe a 330d to retain the RWD and M-sport suspension.
