Keith's 2015 Mega Hot Hatch Thread

There is a gorgeous M4 in my local BMW dealer that I am going to have a look at next week.

I confess to knowing very little about colours / spec's of BMW's other than bar / forum chat stuff. I have been a VAG man for many years!

It is a lovely metallic mustard yellow, something I use to see on a lot on the previous gen M3's what's the official colour?

I haven't stepped through this dealer's doors in a long time, after they were very curt towards me when I wanted to buy a M135i coupe off them. Let's hope they are a bit more friendly this time around :)

  • You'd have to be a bit daft to think there won't be. Ford has (unlike other car makers) realised that loads of people remap and found a way to influence what people do to their cars. At least by off

  • This is my one, love the little beast.

  • Makes you wonder why so few makers do have an approved remap available. You'd think it would be better for VAG to be involved in a safe remap for it's products that just leave the door open to a mult

Some might say your 'mate' needs to wipe his vagina, change his tampon and learn to drive properly..... hehe ;-)

On a serious note, living in the paradise climate of Cornwall (lol) I've never heard of these harsh conditions of which you speak.... If it was properly arctic outside id take swmbos Fabia out. But only because I wouldn't want to risk some numpty sliding/crashing into my M-lite :-)

TBO I did question his sanity when he got it a couple of years ago as his previous car was a highly tuned Scooby P1 which was great in winter..............However he wanted to own an "M". He's had fun with it , been on BMW track days with it etc which is more than some owners will have done, so knows how to drive it! Put it this way I sat in the car when he put it down a road we both know very well & he was hitting the same dry speeds I have done in a Golf MK4 R32, & I wasn't hanging around!......

But up here we get snow/ice/slush & you need winter tyres & FWD or 4WD, & as his commute is now three times longer the mpg is hitting him hard & as the MK7 Golf R has a smaller boot than the already small boot of the hatch then an estate..........also the running costs need to be reduced as he's just bought a much bigger new house.

I know a Seat Leon ST is FWD & could cope but I don't think he could take the downgrade.............

TBO I know a couple of BMW drivers up here who put their cars away in winter & drive the wife's run-around..........I can understand if it was a Ferrari, or a small open top like a Caterham, but a hardtop 3 series or a 1series?........beats me...........

So anyone know a good car to suggest other than a Golf R estate or Alltrack with the GTD engine?...............what do BMW do in X-drive that's about the £30 £35k mark (max) with room & cheaper to run than the M135I?.............

Obvious suggestion would be the 1 and 3 series x-drive models.

The problem with the 'ignore' list is when someone quotes the 'ignored' person, you can then see their original post :D

When I move into my cave and start to live my life vicariously, I will buy a standard spec family hatch, with no pretence at performance and tell others how their fast cars are all rubbish :D

TBO I see no point in have a very fast car on the roads up here as the roads are more suited to rally cars which have a low top speed, but have fast acceleration & good handling. I have driven a Golf R32 down the back roads & TBO only on the occasional dead straight would a proper "M" beat it. As the max speed in the country is 70mph why have a car that does 155mph? To only place is a race track & there are not many of those up here. However loads of people come up here to test themselves on these roads. However quite a few fail when they try to keep up with the local white delivery vans!!................the fastest thing known to mankind!

So yes I get a practical hatch or estate, & yes on the twisty bits others struggle to keep on roads I know (they pass on the straights, & I catch up on their bumper on the twisties again). But in winter I just overtake them..........it's really funny when driving a 14yr old Fabia & over taking £75k Range Rovers on bling 20" rims.................the looks you get................ :D ...same goes for rear wheel drive cars etc.....................

You get all these people at the ski areas & a lot from down south or central belt in fancy cars..................usually end up spining their wheels, getting stuck etc.......or scrapping the snow off the road as it is so low.

So yes I will take practical every day!......................& IF the MK7 Golf R Estate was made in the manual I would get it!..............but they don't & I prefer the manual to the DSG...... I just can't get on with it..........

Anyway as for living vicariously through others........I don't need to I have enough excitement & get my kicks by doing Ice Climbing, Ski-mountaineering etc.................

Obvious suggestion would be the 1 and 3 series x-drive models.

X1 had a look at those when they first came out............new ones in powerful petrol are pricy, 2.0D pre-registered for £31K not bad cant find the luggage size on the web site though............I wonder how a swap would go as he has his car on monthly...............I have look in his area............

I love the M4, just a bit outside my budget (actually quite a lot when I specced one up on their configurator :D). There is a new version coming out soon, well at least a new engine variant, which will have water injection a la the track cars supplied for pace duties at various race meets. It supposedly adds around 40bhp or so and won't harm emissions or consumption. Oh if only I could find a rich man, with a dickie heart................

What he needs is a 335d M-sport X-drive touring. Big discounts on these. Broadspeed currently have them at £41k list knocked down to a tempting £31k.... :-)

That's awesome! I still can't believe how quick these diesels are. As fast as a hyper hatch, 40mpg+ easily available and it even works in the wet and the snow. Who'd have thought that from a BMW.

F me that's a huge discount................& cheaper than his M135I (£34K)...............

Strangely enough I walked past one in the car park earlier today, tall but not as huge as you would think, I had to do a double take as I though it was a X1....................

That's me, a perfect match. Where is he?

Ouch did he pay £34k? That's either a very loaded spec or was bought in the early days prior to the discounts?

Just looked at the insurance groups & space on that.................550lt/1600lt & group 40...................even the lower spec 2ltd are group 28

Golf Alltrack with the GTD 184Ps engine is 605lt/1620lt & group 20E......................

I'll let him know but IMHO it just shows how good the Golf is..................

Early on & loaded.............it was nearer to £35K TBO.....................

If he wants to maintain some decent performance though the 335d is a far better bet imho. The golf will feel very slow compared to the M135i he is used to.

How badly does he need the extra boot space?

I don't want to open the 'hidden' posts from a certain poster, but if it is about a 'friend' who is swapping out of an M135 for a better car, perhaps the Dacia Duster will be perfect. Roomy, super cheap in all ways and available in 4x4 Hth. Much better than a Golf really :)

Put it this way when me & him went ski mountaineering & used my car with easy to throw the gear in, you should have seen his face......................He has also stated that he finds it (luggage space & snowboards) as much of a struggle in the M135I than he did in his first car (Ford Puma 1.7).

So I think more space without getting as big as Octavia...........

Top end with 4x4 with spare wheel (must have) luggage space is 408/1570.....so smaller than Golf estate.....................& my old Fabia is faster (0-62) than the Dacia.

So not really better than the Golf in all aspects which are applicable here.......ie space, driver involvement, 4x4, & cheaper to own & run than the M135I..............

I am being serious....................

I only wish the Honda didn't look so 'Star Wars'

Good fun drive though, you should try it!

Made me feel like a 25 year old ,unfortunately couldn't find her at the time!!

I think I would not feel moved by it, at least not in the same way as the precious version

The boot on the golf estate is lovely. The boot on the Golf R hatch isn't very good imho. I was really shocked how small/tight it was compared to our M135i. Same issue with the RS3 -really struggled to get our baby buggy in! I guess the 4x4 running gear really robs it of useful space. :-)

oops I meant 'the previous' version. The 'spool chicken' doing it's naughty thing again :(

Don't know why you bother Tom. Those F1 cars are rubbish in snow too
