  • @farokinha DIY for the Camera Did you again made a summary. Thus you can save money and have everything you need. Camera: Exactly, I have this camera installed itself and fits into the new crop.

  • With a question like that, and before I watched the link, I hoped whatever it was involved flames.... lots of flames....

  • I wanted folding mirrors so I could see from a distance if I locked the car or not. Well, black mirrors look pretty much the same, folded or not so I put a bright red sticker which can be seen on

OK, some pictures of my backup camera retrofit:

My experiences:

As I mentioned before, chinese seller sent me a wired camera instead of the wireless version ordered.

It wasn't a big problem - I got a nice refund so it was really cheap.

The camera is powered from the reverse light which needed some VCDS coding to get pure 12V.

I have managed to hide all the cables so I am happy with the result.

Some (+) and (-) about the camera:

(+) image quality (OK, even in darkness)

(+++) cables (I was verrry lucky with the length of the cables and the positions of the connectors)

(-) viewing angle (only 70 degree not 170 as promised). Still useful, I can see my rear bumper and ~2,5 m distance behind)

(--) camera adjusting/fixing (fixing screw is useless, can't fix the camera properly) - solved with glue pistol

(--) "design" (stupid...danger of water ingress around the camera and between the camera and it's housing) - solved with additional O-ring and 2K epoxy

And I have a dirt build-up issue but it's not the fault of the china manufacturer I think...

(Heavy) rain is not a problem but wet road with some dirt leads to dirty camera and unclear picture.

Required some of DIY work but was not a problem for me :)

Hi Aki

great job.

after all, you're not alone with the problem that everyone who has installed a rear view camera.

Here is my latest upgrade, uninteresting for most countries) bd000ccd704fb815cecdee8cf0372306.jpg

I have installed the ACC sensor from high A3 8V, so the cruise control now works to 210km / h.

I still have a panel appointed by 2013 there the sensor has been installed as a low variant.

Can You describe the connections and more details about ACC retrofit?

It's needed to replace stalsks?

  • Author

the sensor replacement is plug'n'play. It just needs the protection components are being removed and taken over the coding of the old sensor. The whole process starts by PR coding. The length of the stalks I have taken over from the old sensor.

update sensor cover from 03 2013

Finally got the camera working today. It seems the wires on the loom were labelled incorrectly so the video positive and negative were the wrong way round.

Having accessed the rear of the multimedia unit is it possible to retro fit a 'mitsumi' type connector for an iPod?

Looks like carsystems.pl sell the Mitsumi loom

Hello people,

Can anyone recommend the best method to update the Software on the Columbus unit?

I checked the details of my unit just now and it is showing the following information:

Device Part Number: 5E0035045C

Hardware: H43

Software: 0371

Will my current version even support a rear view camera if I went ahead and installed one?

Thanks,

Lucki

It should. I have 0370 and it works just fine with the factory installed rear view camera.

Does anyone know of a reason to specifically request an update?

I would rather know why they wont update without a reason. Updates should be free and easily accessible.

True, but because they don't, I'm assuming there's a rather large risk of bricking the device while updating. That would be the only logical reason I can think of.

If that is the case, its really bad software. Doesnt it run some kind Windows?

Updates may have a new feature in that you are not licensed for. You will only get a firmware update if authorised by the factory to fix a fault.

Stuff like this are why I can't wait for the Tesla Model ≡. The car industry needs a kick in the pants to get to the 21st century.

Yep, I agree

Thats not a good reason. What updates have brought new features that the buyers havent been entitled to? And it shouldnt be hard to remove such features from an update.

How about OTA DAB logos, doesn't work on any Columbus with 01xx firmware. It was introduced with the 02xx firmware. With the 03xx firmware there are DAB logos licensed from phonostar.de pre loaded.

If you don't like VAGs policy towards MIB updates take it up with them.

Is dab-logos a feature Thats not for everyone? Come on! Their policy is just plain silly.

And sorry if I sounded harsh towards you, my english aint perfect, yet :p

But I will take this up with the dealer when I collect my car.

A that expencive unit should really be entitled to all updates.

I agree with you, the policy is not a good one.

I have had discussions with Skoda UK on this and they are dictated to from above .........

So they just say they cant do nothing?

Wonder what they'll say if my car doesnt have the newest firmware on delivery....

It should. I have 0370 and it works just fine with the factory installed rear view camera.

Having found that older versions of the Bolero firmware will work with flac files, and not insert extraneous gaps between mp3 music files, but the newer version won't play flac files, and does insert extraneous gaps, I wouldn't be too hasty in assuming that newer firmware means greater (or even the same) flexibility and compatibility...

  • 2 weeks later...

Can´t decide on which rear view camera can be the best (ebay cheap ones)  :dull:

Does the video input have to turn off when reverse isn't engaged? I've bought a cheapo rear view accident camera which has a video out, so I might as well use it.
