vRS TDi Tuning - Shark or DTUK?

Featured Replies

Good evening all.

So with Shark Performance releasing figures from their remapped vRS TDi, I've been looking into unlocking more potential from my own car.

Standard Figures

BHP: 184bhp

Torque: 380nm

Shark Performance Figures

BHP: 235bhp

Torque: 469nm

Cost: £649

DTUK Tuning Box Figures

BHP: 230bhp
Torque: 470nm

Cost: £389

Now I'm the first to admit that I don't know a great deal about this as I've never tuned a car in this way. I gather the Shark Performance upgrade is a remap and the DTUK is a tuning box which works by fooling the standard mapping - is that correct?

Are Shark Performances maps good enough to warrant the extra £260? I've always been impressed by their work but, understandably, I don't want to part with £649 unnecessarily.

Also, how do these modifications sit with the warranty, during ownership and at trade in time?

And do they improve MPG at all?

All thoughts and suggestions welcomed.

Pretty sure it's the same box being resold by both mate, the variance in figures is down to the map they loaded to the box and fact they were tested on different cars/environment/dyno's.

I have dealt with DTUK for both my boxes on my S1 and will be getting one for my Octy vRS TDI from them. Andrew really looks after his customers.

Im on dtuk.... no complaints for sure...

Oh, and if the shark option is a remap, say bye bye warranty. The tuning box option will allow you to remove it before sending it for dealership work to avoid them voiding it.

Oh, and if anyone says they can detect it was there, they are lying!

And potentially for lying consumers to fraudulently claim by saying they've never altered their car

Swings and roundabouts, depending on your morals

My dealer knows it's there, no lying here :)

Why?

Morals are all well and good until you face a £8-£10k repair bill

My money would be spent on neither, Shark is hugely overrated imho and I do not like the idea of a tuning box.

You might also want consider REVO and Superchips Bluefin, the latter gives you the option to remove and upload the map as you please.

But of course my opinion is just that, an opinion ....... ultimately it's your choice and money!

I wouldn't remap a car until it was out of warranty personally , the risk of td1 is just too high

I though that was included in 30k £ car you pay.

It is the warranty is good on standard cars on remapped cars you have no drive train warranty at all

Whoops. Sorry, that wasn't my intention. I just don't really get the difference in the tuning offered and am trying to work where to spend the money in order to get the best (which isn't necessarily the fastest car) results.

td1?

Td1 is the marker they put on the computer at HQ to void the warranty

Oh that's ok then.  This is the typical attitude of so many people... you wont get caught so who cares eh? Interestingly enough, committing warranty fraud is also DTUKs stance should something go bang as a result of their product. This has been confirmed so many times on here.  Not sure about shark.

I'd say to the OP, get either by all means but make sure you tell your insurer and do the responsible thing by accepting responsibility should things go wrong rather than expecting SUK and consequently future customers to foot the bill.

And if you read on you will see my dealer is fully aware and yes, I paid my insurer the extra £50 they wanted for it being fitted.

So your ever-so-friendly dealer would be happy enough to assist you defrauding Skoda by keeping quiet about it if anything went bang

Lucky you

Audi, and no, it's not like that!

If the engine/gearbox goes bang then obviously it's my problem. But avoiding the TD1 flag means that if my electric windows stop working its gets fixed no questions as otherwise if Audi UK are in the mood they could play silly buggers and find some reason not to fix something which is not due to the tune.

My dealer is happy to work on a common sense basis.

So very much as we though then

I can't imagine many dealers attempting to get out of covering a an electric window because of a remap

No I wouldn't think a window could be classed as drivetrain . Lol

No tuning box is as good as a rewritten map IMO if you ignore the aspect of being able to remove it and potentially retain warranty then there is no reason to fit one.

The likelihood is they (and more importantly UK HQ) would not, but it's a question mark I and the dealer are happy to avoid.

Be aware though that there are many dealers reselling traded in vehicles which have had boxes removed (and they know it) with full manufacturers warranty in tact. They are more than happy to turn a blind eye when there is a sale involved!

And while it is morally wrong, let's not forget that tuned cars make up a minuscule percentage of the cars under warranty on the road AND that there are many people that have genuine issues having never modded their car and the manufacturer plays silly buggers with them... So if they have to replace 1 or 2 engines a year because of a tuning box pushing the design limits I'm personally happy to see that as karma for the 100s of people they let down who have done nothing wrong!

Why?

i have a shark  map on my superb and its transformed the car.  heard bad things about tuning box`s causing it to overfuel and smoke excessively under hard acceleration.  so imo id go for a remap every time
