knocking noise when braking. Whistling blower/fan

Featured Replies

Anybody had these?

Braking noise... It only occurs at slow speed manoeuvre. For instance three point turns etc. Hit the brake pedal in reverse more than forward and I am getting this sharp knock from the rear.  Similar noise to the pads sticking to lightly rusted disks after washing the car. It's not this because it's when you APPLY the brakes. It's like the inertia of the car moving something out of position.

Whistling noise.. Occurs when I turn on the fan. Constant low level whistle which goes when I crank up the fan to full blast. It's like a leaf stuck in the ducting, or some kind of obstruction, maybe badly aligned duct. Not sure if it's been there since new, but now I have noticed it it's like chinese water torture :-(

Not experienced any problem with my brakes so cannot help you there.

On my previous Mk2 a car park ticket placed inside the window for display found its way down the gap between the windscreen and the facia.

Two years later I got all sorts of funny sound effects and thought the fan motor was on the way out.

Removed the glove box and the filter and fan motor to find the culprit.

Brake noise is likely to be nothing more than the brake pad moving in the calliper, there are lugs on the pad and end stops on the calliper. Common when braking in reverse after braking going forward and vice verse.

Whistling noise, check the pollen filter is fitted correctly and that the cover is secure.

Whistling noise, make sure all the fan-openings are fully open.( not sure what it`s called in english, but it`s where the wind comes into your car :D . )

On my old superb (04) I had this whistlesound, and it was from one of the faneopenings who was nearly closed. I opened it and the sound was gone.

I've had the whistling sound from rear central vent if fully closed, and fan on when I had a mk2 Octy.

Tried different angles on the vanes, everything. It's something in the guts, not at the vents.

Hello - I had the whistling sound on the fan on my Octy... I took it to the dealer who worked out the whistling was coming from the vent in the front glovebox when the vent wasn't quite sealed closed.

I found closing the vent and then pushing it in firmly fixed the problem, although it's quite easy to knock it very slightly open again and have the whistling return.

Hope that helps!

Same here RE the whistling, found it myself. It was the glove box vent.
