Has anyone on here had their DSG remapped (in particular the O3 MKIII vRS TDI 6 speed box)?

 

There's a number of companies advertising remaps for VAG DSG boxes, but as far as I can see none for the 5E5 variant.  Anyone found a good remapper for these gearboxes?

Change the shift points, plus the DSG ECU limits the torque output of the engine, so if you remap a TSi you will exceed the torque limit of the box and the torque curve just flatlines at that point

Simples - in D the mapping is set to change up to as-high-a-gear as it can as fast as it can which blunts the performance.  The vRS is (at least in theory) the performance model (albeit in TDI format) 

 

Yes, I know it kicks down but if it hung on to gears a little longer there would be multiple benefits:

 

1. you wouldn't have to wait for it to kick-down before accelerating away

2. less labouring of the engine

3. possibly increase the time between DPF regens, as the revs would remain in the regen sweet spot (2 - 2.5k) for longer rather than trying to drop to just over idle all the time

4. Adjust the points where the gears change (min and max).  It's a diesel after all. It may rev to 5000 but after 3500 it's done its job and needs to change up.  Aim to keep the engine revving between 1800 and 3500 and it's at its happiest and runs so much smoother / less wear / less noise / etc.

5. possibility to increase the clutch pressure and so handle more power and torque (works on older DSGs so likely/possible on 5E5)

6. better fuel ecomomy.  "What?" I hear you say?  higher revs = worse economy. Well, yes and no. Cutting the number of fuel-hungry regens would very likely show an overall improvement in MPG.  It would blunt the "official" figures hence VAG mapping as they do, but in the real world it should, at worst, maintain MPG or possibly improve it slightly

7. all of the above should lead to a nicer-driving car with fewer unnecessary gear changes and the associated shunting that ensues from each one

 

Some will no-doubt disagree with some, or all, of the above so bear in mind 2 things here which are peculiar to my driving habits...

1. around 60ish % of my mileage (90% of my driving time) is nose to tail town driving.  40ish % of mileage (5% of time) is motorway. The remaining 5% of my time is on slow roads but not in heavy traffic  Having the car change to 5th at 35MPH (for example) is stupid

2. my commute is now 4 miles a day since our company moved offices and the engine never really gets warmed up until I'm driving through the gates at work so regens are a ball-ache

 

So what about S mode?  Well, the mapping is too aggressive and hangs on to revs way past the majority of the torque band.  Why rev a diesel so hard?  It's totally pointless, is potentially bad for the engine and gains nothing in return.

Not so sure about the DSG6 but, the DSG7 only limits the torque is gears 1 and 2.

Both boxes have a maximum torque limit, and they limit the engine ECU to this maximum.

 

The CR184 and the 220TSi can both be mapped to beyond the limit imposed by the DSG box.

Any modification must be declared, but as no additional performance over stock is gained (i.e. no increase in power or torque, just a different gear shift pattern) I would be very surprised if your insurer would bump up the premium.  

Well, this sounds rather good to me.

I have always felt the standard driving mode shifted a little to prematurely and the sport mode hung onto the gears way too long.

It appears to me the 'mapping' is more suited to the Tsi rather than the Tdi.

Please post your findings once you have tracked down a possible source of help...

Sounds like a good idea to me. I think my Octy's DSG has an allergy to 1st gear. It rarely selects it unless at a complete stop. I've noticed it's a PITA in multi-storey car parks as when you slow right down, but not stop completely, at the top of the ramp between each floor it remains in 2nd. This means you're effectively doing a 2nd gear hill start between each floor.

I've had similar with traffic lights on hills where you almost stop (like less than 1 or 2 mph) and then the light changes so you accelerate but it's left itself in 1st and you're going up hill.

Just search for a VAG specialist, my local guys (The Phirm, Hartley Whitney) do it, its not rocket science, all software alteration so, shouldn't cost a lot either.

I know this is a really old topic, but did you ever get anywhere with this, @Smeghead? Or anyone for that matter? I'd like to do the same for literally the exact reasons you posted, but mostly that it's far too keen to drop a million gears when you put your foot down, and then massively over-revs each gear.

 

Perfectly happy with its power output so not looking to change that, which hopefully wouldn't change the cost of insurance etc.

No I didn't in the end.  I spoke to Revo who had a DSG map for the petrol cars (IIRC) but not the diesels.  I think they said it was something to do with the way the engine and gearbox software interacts.  I can't remember the details now unfortunately.  Might be worth speaking to them or Diesel Bob as much water has flowed under the bridge since then.

Torque limiting only occures in 1st and 2nd which I find is generally when the drive wheels are spinning !!!

No, there's a maximum limit of 450Nm in every gear, I know.

This is a problem now and I'm looking for a solution to increase the limit.

Gearbox internals should handle about 650Nm with software upgrade only.

It's a shame Skoda/VAG didn't better tune the dsg setup for diesels! About the first think I noticed when changing from my manual B6 Passat to the Octy 3 dsg Scout was that the sport setup is bonkers for a diesel and the standard setup is far too keen to drop to almost tickover trickling along well below the start of the lower revs torque increase.

But that brings me on to the option (?) I have yet to explore, the individual mode.Could this provide a compromise between normal & sport? Tracked down an earlier  thread here, but maybe more have tinkered with this mode since then?
