Lane assist

Featured Replies

@aldouk: Maybe you can make it less intrusive, the way alancha describes above (#17)

Yes that's right, it was adaptive that I enabled but I think I'll knock it back to the plain lane assist mode during my shorter journeys :)

@kallekilponen: Sounds promising, as I also ordered mine with ACC.

I wonder how it will react at road repairs, where they have painted yellow stripes in another direction, while the white stripes are still there.  :notme:

Mine has been caught out a couple of times on contra-flows on motorways where the old markings are still visible - have to concentrate through the transitions...

I imagine you would. I guess in time, you learn to predict, when the system needs a little guidance.

I think that's exactly right. It isn't by any means infallible and this is probably a good thing as it means there's no temptation to mindlessly rely on it - you always have to be in charge, with LA occasionally making helpful "suggestions".

Motorway contraflows are one case where it can be confused. Pulling back in after overtaking on a single carriageway road is another (assuming like me you don't think it right to indicate left as you pull back in - see a discussion in a related thread on this). I've also noticed that the little indicator that shows green when LA is working seems to do so even if it can only see a white line on one side of you; so on a country lane with while lines in the middle but a rough verge on the left, the indicator shows LA working but it wouldn't stop you drifting into the verge.

Like many others I would ideally use LA on motorways but not on windy country roads but it's too much bother to turn it on and off so I tend to leave it on most of the time,

So if you are distracted on a country road, you will probably not hit an oncoming car, but you might very well hit a tree. :)

I would probably be nice, if you could tie the lane assist to the cruise control. I could imagine, that you would often want to use them in the same situations. It also seems, that many people would prefer, that it was only active at motorways. One would think, that it would be quite easy to make the system able to recognize that situation. Well... we can't have it all.

You can always raise the speed it activates at using VCDS. I haven't tried it yet though.

That might prove useful. But maybe I should at least try it, before I start making a big problem out of it. :-)

Andy,

I saw in another post you managed to lower the speed it activates at. Would you happen to know the coding necessary? I looked in 09 and A5 and couldn't find it anywhere.

I have it and use it alot and it is awesome as a help, the only negative thing I can say about it is that since it steers itself you kinda release the pressure of the steering wheel and 12 seconds it starts complaining that you should grip the steering wheel again.

It is actually remarkarbly good at finding road markings. However if you´re on a real winding road it will have troubles but hey, enjoy the road and the curves and DRIVE!
As someone stated, it really helps if it is windy outside and also when you pass trucks and so on, it helps to keep the car steady.

So is this standard then? I picked up mine yesterday and it has this. No idea that it was going to be on it!

That's because it's not supposed to steer for you, just warn you if you make a mistake.

I know, but mankind is a lazy species and atleast I tend to loosen my grip when going on motorways and then the warning kicks in. I didn't say i release the steering wheel (however I do it sometimes just because I'm fascinated by the technology and want to try it out) But as always keep your mind on driving and be aware of your surroundings.

That's not true, it's supposed to assist the driver in keep in their lane.  There are no warnings on this system other than telling the driver to keep hold of the wheel.

It does s##t the bed with remarkable regularity though. It could be showing green five by five and with no warning, and no road marking change whatsoever it fails to kick in. It's not something you should ever rely on,but if you're testing it, it showing people....be careful.

It does tug you around quite a lot I find, and if you don't indicate to overtake you end up fighting it a bit to get over the white line.  That and the over-active front assist really do insist you drive properly!

Some might say this is A Good Thing :)

This is true.
