Paint work

Featured Replies

anyone reported a fault in the paint work when purchased a skoda from new?

What was it and did you get it rectified ok?

Edited by jasonpl

I will do it in a few weeks when I will go in service for oil change and stuff. The paint wears out on the rear bumper (behind the wheel).

I had a similar situation with my previous Octavia 2FL (on the front bumper), it was fixed in warranty and I had no problems after that.

Not personally but gather some people have had issues with thin/cracking paint on some cars. The roof channels seem to be one of the culprits.

If you have an issue raise it with your main dealer....the car has a several year paint warranty (perhaps 8 or 10, cant think). They should raise a case with Skoda UK and ought to be resolved under warranty. If its really bad and they dont get it right with minimal pain then you'd possibly have a case to refuse the car assuming its new and you haven't had it long.

If the dealer messes you around go to SUK and get them involved, often helps.

Raise a complaint with dealer, SUK and finance if the car is funded by a finance plan.

Take photos and get the dealer to do the same so this can be documented and reported correctly.

Unfortunately it appears paintwork is an area which the brand struggles With. Bear in mind you may be told certain bodywork areas do Not require full paint cover And if i recall correctly if 5 panels are defective you may be able to reject the car (assuming it is relatively new).

So complain complain complain. Though my case took 6 months and initially the car rejection was refused eventually I Was offered very substantial compensation deals.

I won't go into detail regrading my situation all I will say is that if the dealer performed the PDI correctly prior to car handover they would have saved wasting my time and retained future business and maybe have made a profit on my car.

I've had four Octavias Mk I up to the Mk III. All have had fantastic paint. My new vRS has the best of the lot. Much better then the brand new Ford it was parked next to at a joint Ford / Skoda dealership on handover day a year ago. The Ford salesman admitted that the paint was way better on the Skoda and wondered if it had been machine polished. He said that Skoda paint was ALWAYS better than the Fords they sold. Smoother, glossier with less imperfections. I saw it myself. Don't think Skoda struggle with paint at all. Or at least no more than other brands.

I've had two issues: One with a paint crack along a roof line as mentioned above which they rejected saying it was a stone chip.....As I wasn't keeping the car longer than the PCP period I didn't bother to argue as it's not that visible and has been touched up FOC when I took it to a bodyshop after a crash.

Second issue was the paint on the spoiler bubbling up. This was fixed under warranty no arguements.

Does anybody know if the solid colours are ment to have a lacquer top coat ?

I have found on my Octavia III that the paint work is not what it used to be. Done a lot of motor way miles (100k) in my old one and the front bumper held out well. Not much chip marks and I do add a hard layer of wax to it.

However on my new one, covered just under 20k Miles and the front is chipped quiet badly. Not massive marks but loads of small 1 mm to 2 mm marks. Perhaps the plastics are softer but did not expect this amount of wear and tear on her yet. Wanting for some one to pull out on me so I can get a free paint job.

yes they are clear over base just like metallics

I had to have parts of my Mk2 redone as the laquer lifted , its not a new problem for Skoda

Thanks for all the responses. Got my rallye green on October and just noticed when the sun hits the bottom of the o/s rear door ,looks to me two thumb print size imperfections and in print mark appear under the glossy paint . If that makes senses,is that under the lacquer.

Can't be sure if I caused the damage but also can't see how I never see. It before but again it seems invisible until the sun hits it.thanks

I was saying above that I have to visit the dealer for some paint problems on the rear bumper (left side, behind the wheel). In fact the paint is peeling off on that part of the bumper.
First answer of the dealer was that the problem cause is stones and dust/ sand on the roads and peeling is caused by the car wash. Then he started to show me that the car has scratches and stone chips. Best part was when he told me that the paint will peel off in those other parts affected by the stones, from car wash.  :):o

I just told him that they should write in the manual that it is forbidden to wash the car. I am waiting now for the official answer in 2-3 weeks time.
When I had a similar problem with O2 FL they just repainted the bumper with no discussions.

 ... for my dealer.

Looks like I managed to pick up a paint chip on day one - tiny one near the front headlight. Maybe I missed it on delivery, but don't think so. How do you folks deal with chips? I'm thinking of trying Chipex.

I had my peeling laquer photoed by the dealership on Wednesday and am awaiting their excusses however, as I HAVE to wash SWMBO car every time mines done and wash in exactly the same method, any attempt by SUK to lay blame with me will be rebuffed with a "well my wifes Hyundai I10 hasn't a problem so, are you saying Skoda paint isn't as good as Hyundai's ?"

I don't think they'll want to argue to far beyond that point !

My own bodyshop man is recommending a full respray as colour match will be an issue on a year old car and I've lost confidence in the paint on the rest of the car.  Anybody been down this route before ?

Your bodyshop man is lying to you, unless you happen to have some spectacular colour flip paint.  :D

Any decent bodyshop will be able to respray a panel and blow over to the neighbouring ones for a perfect match / blend. At the very least they should offer this as an option.

Themanwithnoaim.

Not a full respray but the bonnet was redone, as was the front and rear bumpers as was the rear door hinges and some on the front door hinge areas. No trouble with lacquer but I'm sure that problem will make its appearance in due course. My problem was that, the white primer was clearly visible. I can only assume Stevie wonder is employed by skoda as their QC man.

I think sniperpenguin is correct here as my door areas were blended in with the Pacific Blue. The bumpers were fully resprayed though as they were removed from the car as was the bonnet.

£25k doesn't get much in terms of a 'quality' finish with skoda. I should have joined this forum before purchase and been more well educated about the brand.

Unfortunately not unique to Skoda, a lot of modern paint is questionable due to going over to more environmentally friendly products some years back , the paint on Nissan's is incredibly soft and easily marked and Mercedes is quite inconsistent , some VAG colours are pretty good , the black magic is well loved by detailers for being pretty tough
