vRS: Misty Screen, anyone had the same problem?

Featured Replies

Hi,

HELP PLEASE!

Bought my vRS a few months ago after reading rave reviews on briskoda. I am really impressed :D , but........... every time I switch on the screen vents the windscreen mists up, even on a dry sunny day. The problem was worst when returning to the parked car after rain earlier this week the screen was dripping wet  . I think it may be water in the heating system as it appears to be localised around the heater outlets.

Can anyone suggest a cause or has anyone experienced the same problem?

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Is this with the normal heater or air con/ climatic?

I know that when i turn on the climate control in the Octy, it automatically uses the lower (footwell) vents for the first few moments to clear out any damp air from the system. This is standard on the CC unit and mentions it in the owners manual.

Just takes a while to dry the air out.

Leave the air con off for a few minutes before stopping the car.

Mine does seem to mist up easily. Of late I have been using the heaters to keep warm and this seems to be makeing things better.

Turning the AC off a few minutes before you get to the end of your journey is said by some people to stop this I think. I sometimes get it, but it always clears within seconds. I think it works by allowing the condensor to get warm so that then no moisture collects on it when you stop driving, and subsequently gets into the cabin when you next use the car.

Or I think that's the reason...

Thanks for the quick responses!

The problem is not confined to when the car first starts or if I have been running the air-con, it happens even when the engine is at running temperature. The air-con can clear it, but I am really concerned about the amount of water that is collecting when the car is parked (it is like Niagara Falls in there after a rain shower!).

Are you doing long or short journeys?

Just wondering if its not had chance to remove all the moisture.

Not an expert on this.

How old is your car? I know the Autocar test car had some problems with the door seals coming unglued and letting moisture in. They had it fixed under warranty IIRC...

Another thing I've found is the newer ones (like mine) have manual rear windows, and the handles seem to get pushed down accidentally sometimes, especially if I've had the back seat down. They wont open enough that you'll be able to see a gap, but it would mean that the seals not as good, so the moisture might be getting in that way?

I am doing journeys of about 20 miles. I am wondering if it could be a blocked drainage tube somewhere.

I check this all the time now, since I was washing the car and soaked the inside of the door. I've never opened the back windows since owning the car, so I never assumed that it would be the windows until I tried to close them.

Are your carpets wet? You may have to lift them up and feel the backings as they're reasonably thick.....

It is slightly damp underneath the carpets in the front. Any ideas?

Several owners have had problems with the seals on the back doors which has lead to the rear carpets getting wet, so I guess the same may be true of the front ones? Sure Ross will be along shortly to help out :D

Thanks for you all your replies.

I have just been out to check around the door seals and windows, no problems there.

I am inclined to believe it is water in the heater system as it always appears around the vent outlets.

Andy :)

Had the same problem the other night when there was a bit of a chill and it took ages to clear as well ,even with aircon on. Very miffed?

Have now got it booked in at Autotechnique in Salisbury (no idea what the dealer is like, any comments?).

The service manager was talking about problems with pollen filters and water in the heater/air-con, but then suddenly changed his tune to a leak somewhere in the car.

He wants to charge me if there is water in the heating system, not happy :(

Will post update.

Had a simular problem with my last car ....... I used to open the o/s rear door

3 or 4 times every day to put some paperwork on the back seat ...... went

through a car wash and got soaked :o it seems the action of slamming

the door closed over a period let the glass drop a fraction every time ..... so now

I make a point of winding up / checking the handle most days and especially

before washing the car .. with a jet wash

My front windscreen mists up easy too, especially on a cold day when I put on my windscreen vents. .

same here, when we had the heavy rain earlier in the week i had to have the a/c on to keep the wind screen from misting ip, came back to the car next day and the windscreen and windows were all misted up, and there were pools of water on the windscreen directly above the vents, i just used kitchen roll to wipe the windows, i was then out for a run and didnt have to use the a/c, i also had the heater on and the window slightly open, next day windows bone dry, looks like the a/c removes the moisture from the air when its operational, but when this off the moisture will condense from the air back on the windows. The key here is i think is to switch of the a/c and open the window slightly to allow the moisture out of the car about 10 mins before you finish a journey.

Can recommend Winchester Motor Company - they serviced my Fabia :D

Chris

Yes, i get a very misty screen sometimes, more than any other car that i've owned but it usually clears after a couple of minutes of heat/aircon.

Try using RainX Antifog available from Halfords, negates the need for me to even use air con when its raining.

yeah mines the same friday night finished work windows soaking inside

also washed car this afternoon and watched rear window steaming up while drying car

might check all seals on sunday they will be covered on 3rd year of warranty?
