Succumbed to the options list! (who is the worst offender?)

Featured Replies

Ordering my first new car and finding it very hard to resist myself when choosing options. On one hand I know that what I spec now won't make a huge difference to the resale value, but on the other hand this will be MY car for the next few years so don't want to do without something that would be good/useful!

Here is what I am thinking:

VRS Estate with options:

Red (it's free!)

Black pack

Sunset glass

Panoramic roof

Colour Maxi dot

Some sort of sat nav (waiting on MY16)

Front assist

Park assist (originally thinking front parking sensors but it's only £200 more!)

Who is the worst offender?

Lol,there was a time, years back when a Skoda owner would count himself lucky if he had four wheels when the car was delivered, never mind five

  • Ah yes of course, a baby buggy - just what you need in the boot when you find a fecking great chunk of metal sticking out of the side of your tyre.  Why didn't I think of that?

  • I think it would be easier to list the options I didnt get than to list what I ordered :p

But... I am also tempted by:

Winter pack (mostly for heated frontscreen)

Tow bar (in case I want to fit a bike rack?)

ACC (as I have front assist!)

Auto dimming mirrors (because the rear view one dims?)

Variable boot floor

Power tailgate..

Where's the spare wheel? emoticon-0100-smile.gif

This is why both our cars are from no-option manufacturers (though they are the top trim levels so effectively everything they can come with). The list price looks nice, then you add all the crap (it should have) and you pay a load more.

As long as you are happy kissing goodbye to an extra £3,000 then I would say go for it.

Not sure if i qualify....but i walked in to buy an ambition plus hatch manual in race blue with tech pack, columbus, color maxidot and 18" alaris for $31k aud.

Now im picking up my vRS hatch dsg in race blue with tech pack in 2 weeks for $40k. Doh!!!

I specd my Estate with

Kessy

Winter pack

Electric boot

Black pack

Metal grey

ACC

Spare wheel

Sunset glass

Folding mirrors

Columbus nav

Variable boot floor

Front parking sensors.

I had to stop myself adding more... Haha

Mk3 Octavia is proving to be a depreciation disaster....i've done 9k on my year old 2.0 Elegance estate manual....the only saving graces are that its on PCP and its a base spec car other than a spare wheel.

Think ive mentioned it before but a colleague at work (more a passing aquaintance dont really know him) has the same car but with DSG and nigh on every conceivable option.....it cost over 30k new. Given its probably not worth trade a great deal more than my own I figure that could have stood to have lost perhaps 13/14k (or bordering on half its value) in one year which is horrifying....we all expect quite a harsh 1st year drop in value but these things are v bad news indeed.

O3 is a victim of its own success in that regard....over supply and waining used demand.

My advice...spec as little as possible unless you are happy just to blow the money.

I went for

Octavia mk3 vRS TSI DSG Estate
Normal seats with grey piping
Sunset glass from B pillar back
Temporary space saver spare wheel
Black design package
Columbus sat nav with European maps and colour Maxi DOT computer
Canton sound system (10 speakers, digital equaliser, subwoofer)
Heated front seats
Parking sensors all round
Ext warranty
Maintenance plan
Heated Washers
Variable floor

I dont really car so much about depreciation since I will keep it 5 or 6 years, I need to have something i can live with for that time and not regret not having a canton for example

Mind you Canton and variable boot floor isnt great as the floor blocks the subwoofer port, you need to lift the floor really to get decent bass

Likewise, depreciation is irrelevant to me as it's a lease car. The options added a bit to the monthly payments but it's still within budget and costs way less than the passat cc it replaced

Probably a good thing there are no totals to some of these lists!

Only reason I would get a spare wheel would be to benefit someone else...

I know what you mean about options though. The only options that were available on my current car, Honda Civic Ex, were heated leather seats and a glass roof. (both options which were ticked by someone else!) fitted parking sensors myself and still trying to find a worthy replacement 6 years later!

I thought the sunset is standard on the estate.... And iirc the basic nav is being made standard.

Basic nav is standard at the moment but it appears they are giving it away to make way for its replacement (which I would rather have)

Unfortunately sunset glass isn't standard on the VRS Estate, I have added it as the one and only optional extra to the lease I have signed up for from Simpson's Skoda.

Got a good spec on mine (see bottom of post)

Out of all that lot, sunroof, spare and power boot are my must haves.

I put £2k of options on mine, and as it's an Elegance it already has quite a few items that are optional on the vRS so its a good spec. Like pipsyp says, depreciation is a killer for owner occupiers so I'm glad I got a £3k cash discount as had no trade in but got to keep it for 4 years to pay it off and any residual value will be a bonus as its only costing me the same as my previous company car. Looking forward to getting my new suspension fitted in about 10 days, as so fed up with the ride quality I've decided to fit a couple more options, namely a set of Bilstein dampers and Eibach Pro kit lowering springs!

Interestingly I've found novality of power boot has worn off but I also not got bleeps decoded yet or remote closing, probably better then.

Also if Amundsen is currently standard on Vrs presumably the jump in cost from no nav to Columbus is now smaller?

The novelty does wear off quickly...but then there are the situations when you really need it and it rocks.

For example when the rear end is covered with mud and you don't want to touch the handle or when you have to pick up heavy boxes from the boot with no hands left over to close it.

I was in the latter situation today and was really thankful for the power boot. I simply stepped out of the car, touched the outside of the drivers handle to lock the car, touched the trunk handle to open it, then pressed the close button and picked up the boxes while the boot started to close. Then I simply walked away while the boot closed and locked itself. With my old car I would have to have put the boxes on the dirty ground or break my back by trying to hold them with one hand while closing the boot with the other.

Hi,

For me I would have:

Sunset glass (A must on an estate)

ACC (thought they were standard now?)

Black Pack (Luckily mine came with it)

Tow Bar (Added by my dealer, they are fantastic for bike racks).

Don't go mad though, you could regret spending unnecessary money that will be lost when trading in.

Only reason I would get a spare wheel would be to benefit someone else...

Sorry, you'll need to explain that to me.

When I got my Civic as a last car it came with a spare wheel which I promptly sold to a forum member so that I could reclaim the boot space. (needed it for the baby buggy!)
