Replacing CD Changer with MDI

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was wondering if there is any way to install MDI kit in the boot, instead of Existing cd changer. I would much prefer MDI ( i need to connect my ipod where most music is stored ). I've got Columbus RS510 system.

Many thanks

Jakub

MDI is factory installed inside the cabin somewhere so it can easily be reached by the driver.

In the Octavia it is in the glove box. I'm not sure about the Superb.

You don't need to get rid of the CD changer or Aux input as you can buy a pass through cable that allows MDI to be added while retaining all other inputs (I had MDI, BT CD changer - but not Aux - on my Octavia).

I was hoping that I could only unplug CD changer and plug MDI in the boot. That would save me from taking Columbus out? To be honest I will plug iPod once and I do need constant access to it.

You may find, as I do, that your iPod will occasionally 'freeze' and need resetting. If your iPod is in the boot, this could be a little tricky!

good point:) I'm trying to get some installation guide for one of those MDI kits, just to have idea what is really involved.

I had mine installed by the dealer so I can't help there I'm afraid. The installation for the Superb is neat and is in the cubby hole under the front centre armrest though. Good luck!

The only way to find out is to unplug the autochanger and check the connections, see if it will fit. My wife had a Mk5 Golf with the iPod dock in the armrest - the one that worked a bit like a CD changer, where it would allow you to select from 5 playlists and the 6th just played all of the songs in order. When I fitted the MDI, I replaced all of the loom because I seem to recall it was different. Either that or I wasn't really paying attention.

No the connections are different. The MDI needs CAN, but the changer doesn't have this, it uses some other control bus. I guess in theory you could extend the CAN to the rear, and reconnect the audio leads, but you might as well use the plug in adaptor leads to fit the MDI closer to the front.

The MDI is factory fitted in the console behind the gearstick, with the connector in the cubby box, but I believe there are other installs with the connection in the glovebox.

Does the Superb use the same armrest mounting bracket as the Golf?

My son and I have both retro fitted the mdi kit to our Superbs, We bought a fully connected lead from Eddie-nl, and the installation is pretty easy. We have both located the MDI unit behind the air con/temp control dials that are below the Columbus/bolero. and cut a small hole in the top  of the glove box to feed the mdi lead/socket into the glove box.

I don't know, but I doubt it. It's a metal bracket that fixes to the floor. Then there's an extension lead with the socket that fixes into the cubby box.

Part number 3T0035643, less than a tenner.

Fair enough. Just wondered as someone mentioned it going in the armrest. I didn't know if that was OE location or not.

Thanks everyone, I will get my MDI kit next month, so you'll probably hear from me again.
