I've got a couple of long trips (like Austria.....) coming up so I thought I'd check the when the next service is due

Inspection Service - 1600 miles, 42 days

Oil Change Service - 1600 miles, 407 days

How can the mileage be the same and the number of days so different ?

Or is variable servicing all smoke and mirrors ?

"whichever comes first" I believe is applicable here. And if you're planning on doing a return trip to Austria from where you live (I'm guessing the UK) you'll certainly go over 1600 miles so best do it before.

and quite likely that the dealership didn't correctly reset the service indicator at the last service...?

Looks like one was set for 2 years and the other for 1 year, whilst the mileage is the same. Can I take it that this is not your first service? I think on variable servicing the oil change is due every 2 years (or 30k kms) and the inspection (which just means they tell you whether you need anything over and above an oil change, like plugs, filters etc.) is first due after 2 years or 30k kms but then every year or 30k kms thereafter.

Calling it a 2 year service interval is a con, after the first service it's annual even on the variable regime.

No it isn't.

On variable it is every 2 years or 20k, whichever comes first. If your car tells you otherwise the spanner monkeys have messed up the reset of the service intervals.

Check your service schedule booklet. According to mine (page 7) the oil change service is due "According to the service interval display (at the latest after 2 years or 30 000 km)."

On the other hand, the "inspection" specifies that it's due "...according to service interval display (but no later than after 2 years or 30 000 km). Then every year or 30 000 km."

There is also a note attached to the max time/distance "whichever comes first".

So it's bad enough that a car with a notional 2yr / 20k mile service interval won't actually make 20k miles due to the lazy km-mile conversion, but after the first service it's maximum 1 year between "inspections". Fine if you're going to buy it new and chop it in before its first MOT, but if you like to get 10yrs / 100k miles* out of your cars then it's a little naughty to describe it as having a 2yr / 20k mile service interval.

* whichever comes first.

It does say that, but my first O3 when on variable was set to 2 years or 20k after the first 20k service by the dealer ..........

And that is done automatically by the computer!

Interesting. After my first service the oil change interval was reset to 2yrs/18.6k mikes, and the inspection interval was reset to 1yr/18.6k miles, exactly in line with the book.

Sounds like vag have realised that they need to see cars more often to bring in the ££££££

My car is the same after the first service (@ 30,000km) here in Switzerland.

It was reset to 2yrs/30k km for the oil change but 1yrs or 30k km for the inspection.

I would hope that the 1 year "inspection" shouldn't cost so much as they don't replace or change anything its just 30minutes labour to check the oil, run a finger over the brake disc lip & kick the tyres. ;)

& kick the tyres. ;)

You obviously haven't tried selling a car in the UK, our tyre kickers can take forever, its a kinda something to do whilst Hmmming over the price.

I did once see a small ad that read "kick my car's tyre and I'll kick your head in" I kidd you not !!!
