there's too many of us anyway. and we live too long

  • Jobsworths and lowlifes spring to mind plus the claim of 29,000 early deaths without one shred of evidence.

  • That's hardly going to dissuade Councils  from forcing through changes designed to line their pockets under the altruistic banner of "doing the right thing for everyone/saving the Earth"   Round her

They've done this for many years in Germany with the Umweltplakette.

Three different colours based on vehicle emissions Green, Yellow and Red. Vehicles too "dirty" don't get one at all.

Then you are only allowed in certain zones of cities depending on which badge you have. Some are green only etc.

You can bet they would charge more than the 8 euros (lasts the lifetime of the vehicle) they charge in Germany though if the UK did it!

Phil

I'll bet that's top of the pile in Ed Balls " To Tax ". Box...

Wonder what the French are doing with all their dervs

Our government's inaction on air quality is simply shocking. It's literally killing thousands of people. The EU are spot on in forcing UK compliance - if than means fewer diesels in urban areas so be it.

So, expect a diesel car price crash.

Is that another reason to vote ukip? Up yours to the EU.

Urm, don't you mean a reason not to vote UKIP? It's the EU dragging our government into the 21st century on a whole range of health issues.

If it's anything like health and safety on machine tools, the EU makes the rules, the UK follows it to the letter, the rest of Europe pick out the bits they like.

It'll be top of who ever is in no. 11 to tax the ass out of diesels.

I heard a few days ago that the electric car subsidy will likely return with Car tax bands being rejigged again by using NOX values which will mean many more will be stung for VED and almost none would pay a low tax.

Sounds like bo**ocks to me,

Diesel is a dirty fuel and always has been and always will be,

Successive governments have pushed diesels for years with lower tax etc and now everybody has them there talking about whacking tax up by changing VED,

What a suprise

Yep it's going to happen , certainly in some large cities , I believe Paris has a plan to ban older diesels from the city .

Could, should, might, maybe, will be, Doubt it.

Diesel Scrappage Scheme soon in the UK hopefully.

But then it might need to be for the newer Euro 5 Emission Cars that people went and bought with the £2,000 Scrappage money last time from

the public purse.

Will Company Car Users be the first to get penalised, the UK Government can just withdraw any Tax Benefits that

they get in driving Dirty Diesels via changes with the rules & HMRC.??

That would be an easy thing.

Give 3 years notice in the first budget after the new UK Government takes over.

'No diesel cars in the UK, Private or Business'.

Lets see how the Financial Markets, Car Manufacturers & Fuel Importers & Retailers react to that one.

Topics merged.

If Germany Head Quarters the Biggest Vehicle Manufacturer in the World,

& Germany is the biggest Polluter in Europe,

Do you think it will be simple for Germany to tell the Volkswagen Group to stop Developing any more Polluting Heavy Oil Burners

& building them in plants all around the world.?

Starting in Europe.

VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK

The CO2 issue isn't going away - despite some politicians publicly distancing themselves from climate change, so a bulk return to petrol seems unlikely unless we can squeeze even more efficiency from petrol motors.

Increasing the duty on diesel but not petrol doesn't seem politically viable due to obvious uproar from commercial users, and anyway the air quality problem is only in cities. VED could be increased for diesels - however that does NOTHING for the existing fleet on the road apart from causing them to be scrapped slightly sooner. VED for NEW diesels could be increased significantly to dissuade their initial purchase, however there is a real risk of throwing the baby of with the bathwater - diesels are still great for motorway and rural use (and that's were the big miles are anyway).

I suspect it'll come back to differential congestion charging, charging diesels more to enter specific urban areas - but outside of London the infrastructure just doesn't exist to do this.

Urban air quality is a deadly serious issue and one our government has largely ignored for too long.

outside of London the infrastructure just doesn't exist to do this.

Round here, they've commissioned a bus lane initiative that's taking one lane on the major arterial road away from general use.  The Roadworks to do this have cause 4 and 5 mile tailbacks at peak times - clearly in the best interests of the environment, all those lvoely cars sitting stationary spewing fumes.......

They've indicated a park and ride scheme at the junction of  the major motorway serving said arterial road - great idea which I'd even stump up cash to use if it made an appreciable difference to the last/first part of my commute.  Apart from the fact they've erected brand new armco so there's no provision for any of the motorway traffic to access the proposed scheme.  Genius.

There is no such thing as a public transport infrastructure once you leave London that I've ever come across - it's too expensive and too disjointed.  I was comparing costs - Oyster card travel in the capital is quite reasonable and capped daily across bus and tube/dlr at under £10 a day.  There supposedly a SystemOne travelcard for round the Northwest that accomplishes the same thing, but all the published fares are for off peak use only and almost match the TfL prices for what is a less integrated and more confusing system (odd boundaries like Blackrod rail station, where so few trains actually stop).

Either way you slice this news re Diesel, the motorist will be penalised heavily (where am I going to get a  petrol-burning comfortable cruiser returning 50mpg+ in the real world that isn't cheap, plasticky, tinny?) in terms of having to stump up more cash to buy a new motor (thereby increasing personal debt through financing - we all know where a debt driven economy leads.....) and then pay more in fuel duty at the pumps?  It's another inevitable nail in the IC coffin pushing an agenda based on questionable data (number of early deaths attributed is purely a model, can't actually be proven.  Those 'preventable deaths' might also be attributed to lack of poor road lighting, poor road surfacing, the flying spaghetti monster etc).

Until there is a viable infrastructure for public transport that is as effective and comparable on costs, or similar to support EVs, I'm afraid we might as well just get our wallet out, drop trousers and adopt the position.

If some half-baked idea is implemented, expect to see rising costs passed onto the consumer and a commensurate drop in business growth/overall productivity.

Those that dont think pollution is really an issue have a short memory , remember London last April

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/apr/02/smog-alert-england-wales-air-pollution-saharan-dust

http://www.politics.co.uk/news/2014/05/30/london-smog-boris-johnson-backs-down-in-air-pollutionrow

"The No to Silvertown Tunnel campaign released the results of a 'citizen science' project in which they monitored pollution levels at 150 locations set to be affected by the new Thames road crossing.

They found nitrogen dioxide levels up to two and a half times the legal level under EU regulations. In total, five sites recorded pollution levels at more than double the legal limit".

As an asthmatic i get affected quite quickly by a rise in nitrogen dioxides , I dont need further evidence

Yep it's going to happen , certainly in some large cities , I believe Paris has a plan to ban older diesels from the city .

Yep Paris looking to ban all dirty cars by 2020.

Even Euro6 diesel cars may not meet the pollution requirements for city areas, epecially for NO and PMs.

The problem seems to be that diesel as just so dirty compared to petrols in the area of Nitrogen oxides, PMs and THC (unburnt HCs not the bit in cannabis).

Diesels hardly feature in the top one thousand Euro5 cars or top 100 of Euro6 cars in regard to NO and THCs.

Low emmision zones banning diesel cars during certain days ie summer days with little wind or only allowing alternate regs ie odds one day evens the next are looking likely.

My Dacia....

Manufacturer    Model      THC Emissions [mg/km]             Emissions NOx [mg/km]

DACIA Logan TCe 90                     74                             10

I'm surprised it's taking so long.

The time to do it should have been when the London LEZ was introduced years ago.

They just focused on commercials.

Regarding any worries about a price crash of diesels... if it's non-DPF cars (earlier than 2007) they are over 8 years old and not worth a huge amount anyway, plus many more places in the country they can be used.

Deaths due to air pollution could be as high a 30,000 a year in the UK alone.

http://news.sky.com/story/1474312/diesel-faces-crackdown-as-uk-ordered-to-act

Unless you live in Wales, Scotland (not Glasgow) or SW England the future of diesel engined cars looks bad for urban areas as their output of key pollutants is about 10 times that of equivalant petrol engines.

Seems to me all the powers that be have shot themselves in the foot years ago, Cities like here in Sunderland had electric trams for many years, Scrapping them in favour of Diesel fuelled buses. We see now that a few cities are going back to electric powered public transport.  I know that there is a pollution problem in many areas but it concerns me that governments will use this as an excuse to tax indiscriminately, Just another money making scam. Like we were fed all this propaganda about the polar ice caps melting due to global warming, Where we now see that some scientists reckon that ice caps are expanding.   I understand that pollution problems must be addressed, But not at the expense of the general public who will just be propping up government coffers with higher taxation...Sorry Rant over  :notme:
