So I decide to got out for just an hour or so, bell my brother and he's at a mates house so meet up with him.... big mistake... :D

Him and his mate made an exhaust for his bike, looks awful and sounds awful

Went for a quick spin, one of those where you are going somewhere but go the most arse about tit way ever. We swapped after 15 min and I lead, took us out into a village, as we exited it I could see a silver Volvo behind us, couldnt see it very well but it was quite new with LED running lights. My 6th sense was tingling, backed off to limit (ish  :notme: ) and sure enough after a short distance blue flashing lights.

I stopped as soon as it was safe, we were going round a long sweeping bend which I wasnt going to stop on so waited for the straight bit, the sirens went on after a few seconds too :D Pulled over and took our lids off and had a chat, they'd been behind us for a while, only started following us because the exhaust sounded like we were hooning it, once they caught us up they realised we wasnt actually going as fast as it sounded. They planned to spin round in the next village and leave us be until some bright spark decided to pull a little wheelie.

So after a chat and some ID checks (the only time I've gone out without my wallet!) my brother got a NIP or FPN (I'm not sure which) for due care and attention. Luckily for him (surprisingly) they do courses for that too now so he should just get a day in the class room and £100 taken off him. Managed to stop him digging himself a whole by getting arsey and kept on decent terms with the officers.

Expensive lesson, I've told him 100s of times to put his bloody mirrors on, he'd have spotted the TrafPol if he had and not done it, I've also told him I dont want a overly loud bike due to getting too much attention, again he doesnt listen.

Only my 2nd time being pulled over, so it was a experience for me lol, they were fair, in reality I think there could have been a few more bits of paper work, number plates, overly loud exhaust etc but they obviously decided the wheelie was too far. Enough excitement for on day I think, I left my brother putting his other exhaust back on and looking at mirrors.

Ahaha. Oh dear!

And nice trainers to match by the looks of it!

Reminds me of a song by Supergrass :)

Lesson learned I guess.

I dont think his brother does learn from things though haha.

Judging by past stories anyway

If he doesn't learn, next time I'd let him dig as deep as he can lol. Buy him some boots though :o  :peek:

He has some, I dont know if he doesnt wear them because they dont go with his jeans or if he doesnt wear them because it's inconvenient? In fairness, he has a proper bike jacket under his hoody which is a huge improvement from not having one before.

Have found that in the past if your aren't arsey with the police they are normally pretty understanding and easy going, it is only if you start cursing and gobbing off that they return it in kind. Also in those situations, there is generally only one winner as the more you gob off, the more they look in to things that they might have otherwise over looked (or let you off with a quiet word)

An uncle of mine who is a bike mechanic and retired racer etc was brought a bike in with an issue and took it down the road and back to see what the owner was on about. Brakes failed on approach to a sharp bend and in trainers about 40mph, wore through to his heel bones and had melted soles stuck to the bone at sides. Always remembered that and always worn my boots. My boots are why I still have my right leg from an even slower off. It's amazing the difference it can make. Google about for some of the nasty graphic pics to scare him into it. At the least highlight how bad an idea it is to have laces on a chain driven machine!

Just google "degloving motorcycle" for why the proper clothing should be mandatory!

I have heard from a few medical professionals that, in the event of a motorbike accident, they will often leave leathers in place pre hospital because they do such a good job of stabilising and compressing the injuries.

Don't even get me started on the ones who ride Hyper Sports bikes around town in summer in shorts, 'T' shirt and flip flops!  Think a 30 mph spill won't hurt?  Wrong.

Never know when its gonna happen do ya.

I nipped to the shop a few years ago, just the other side of town, luckily i always wear my gear, but a pick up pulled out n i smashed into the side of it.

Probably less than a mile from home lol

It will hurt for a damn sight longer than the accident that caused it!

All it takes is a couple of seconds of inattention from one person.

A burnt leg from a hot exhaust isn't a lot of fun either.

I know, it all goes in one ear and out the other. Remember this is the person who come off at 15mph taking enough skin off his arm to remove his tattoo but continue riding in a hoody for another 18 months after.

I rode into town last year in joggers, 20mph and less than a mile, felt well odd, like I was naked lol.

Statistics from 2013 showed that most road accidents occured within a mile of the home.

I should be ok, I moved house last year.

Ahaa.

Well you're most likely to be within a mile. You have to go through that mile to get anywhere haha

Even just wearing a paddock jacket.

Does not put up most protection even at low speed and I was joining a motorway wide open throttle.

As above it was more painful having the nurse clean out the gravel than actually doing it at the time.

Proper gear, no matter how hot it is, or do not ride unless you like the skin graft look.

Leave it at a mates house....sorted

Re: gobbing off to the police - The aim of the game is not to win an argument, the aim is to get away with whatever they stopped you for...

Not saying Matts brother did any of this.. But as a seperate note, They're only people at the end of the day.

People don't like being spoken to like dirt or shouted at.

I certainly do nobody any favours if I get spoken to badly. I do the bare minimum.

That goes both ways though. Most traffic police are just ticket monkeys who have decided what they're going to do and how much money they want to take off you before they've got out of the car, so there's no point having a discussion with them or trying to help them.

Re: gobbing off to the police - The aim of the game is not to win an argument, the aim is to get away with whatever they stopped you for...

And like most people, the worse you treat them, the worse you will be treated.

Take the initial warning/ticket and a lot of the time it goes no further.

Get shirty with them and they almost inevitably will slow things down to a crawl, go over every detail of your machine to make sure it is fully legal, double check all your documents etc.

One of the things to keep in mind is with many offences the officer has the discretion to issue a Caution instead of a ticket or report.  They can only do that though if you accept that you have done the dastardly deed.  If you argue the toss then you would have to let a Court decide.  Quite often minor offences will be dealt with by discretion as it is a form of education rather than the heavy hand and it is less paper work (or was in my day).

Arguing when stopped will not do anyone any favours BUT that doesn't mean roll over.  If you have not done what you are being stopped for the best thing is to explain in a civil manner and if all else fails have your day in Court where you can rely on the system of the Crown have to prove beyond all reasonable doubt.
