Intermittent Binding Brakes

Featured Replies

I've had my Octavia for about 18 months and in the last few months I've been having an intermittent issue with the O/S.F and the N/S/R brakes binding a the same time.

The front pads and discs were replaced (by me) over 6 months ago and no issues until one day where I was driving an the car was shuddering pulled over and the OSF brake was smoking and obviously MPG was rapidly diminishing! It also seemed to get worse as I slowed down without applying the brakes and just coasting out of gear.

I pulled over waited an hour or so for RAC to turn up (battery had died as well) and in that time the brakes had cooled down and was drive-able again. Got home stripped the front brakes back again and cleaned up.

I've had it happen a couple of other times but not to the severity of the first time. Doesn't seem to be the distance of the journey as it has happened after 5 miles of dual carriageway.

I had it happen about a week ago and I pulled over turned off the engine not removing the key and could hear the brakes sounding like they kept being applied rapidly (a bit like ABS but not the sound of the pump going) I had it out of gear and no handbrake on and the car didn't move. Then when I took the key out the car started to roll back and the noise of the brakes being applied stopped. Not sure whether this was coincidence or not but thought it was worth mentioning.

I've not had any ABS lights come on.

Had a look at the following forum post and wonder whether it could be a servo issue as the issue sounds similar. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/249393-baffling-brake-problem-help/

Think that is all the details I can remember on the problem

Any advice would be awesome! I've not had a chance to look into the issue as my pregnant other half is due anytime now and we only have the one car but wanted some advice for when I do have a chance to investigate.

First of all, congrats on the baby!

Second, Before the doom and gloom of servos and ABS pumps, have you made sure that the caliper carriers and pads are all cleaned up and copperslipped?
Could just be intermittent snagging depending on how much knock back they've received with the driving. I know my indy garage gets all kinds of sanders/grinders/shavers on my brakes when I go in to clean them up.
