Superb III - Electronic Hand Brake

Featured Replies

If it disengages automatically that would be great but doesn't bother me really. Think I'm past handbrake turns.

I think it's like a lot of new technology. There will often be resistance for a while but as it becomes the norm across most vehicles we will think nothing of it in a few years. The traditional handbrake is second nature of course for most people and it's one of those things that you operate without thinking about it too much so it's bound to feel odd for a while with an electronic aid. IPersonally I do like the old fashioned handbrake but I'll adapt in time!

I suppose, to a certain extent,, it's a bit like changing gear or using a clutch and then switching to an automatic.

Some Emergency vehicles like police cars are still fitted with manual handbrakes mechanisms to facilitate those handbrake turns and other such manoeuvres [emoji3]

Yes, it will as it has the Auto hold switch adjacent to EPB. It works pretty well with the auto hold feature. I test drove the new Passat a while ago and I really loved that feature coz EPB is activated automatically when you stop and disengages as soon as you accelerate....as simple as that!

The other advantage you see in SIII due to EPB is they've gained a lot in size of armrest cubby box stowage. Look how massive it is.....huge! And I don't think the armrest is a sliding one like SII so by offering a long armrest, you'd accommodate more people comfortably in using the centre console armrest  depending on their seat position.

I've got it on the Tiguan - it's a fantastic piece of kit.

Not exactly new technology. I had an electronic handbrake in a 2008 2.0 litre diesel Renault Laguna estate with manual gearbox and hated the electronic handbrake. Just reaching the clutch bite point was enough for it to disengage. Got rid of the car after just 6 months for a 3.0 litre Laguna coupe with auto gearbox which also had the same electronic handbrake but this one held the car until you gave it enough acceleration to pull away (smoothly). Although I kept the car only 18 months (poor build quality issues) and swopped it for my Superb II I actually found it quite "archaic" going back to a manual handbrake (I don't think I impressed the salesman on the Superb test drive when I kept trying to pull away with the manual handbrake still applied).

So, I for one was quite pleased to see it as an option in the Superb III.

Does it actually self-actuate at standstill? The Renault didn't, requiring a simple flick of the paddle-type switch - which I would find preferable.

Not an option in SIII but a standard fit. Yes, auto activate when stationary which is the Auto hold feature. I guess you may be able to deactivate auto hold

Had it on an XF I tested - excellent system.

I have it on my hired Quashqi and tookngetting used to but grown to like it so I'm happy, especially cos of the extra space it allows

It sucks......

My A8 has an electronic handbrake, have no issues with it at all, and you can still do a handbrake turn if you like. The system has an emergency application mode, simply lift and hold the switch in the up position while driving for a few seconds and the brake will apply thus overriding the normally disabled switch.

My car is Auto though, so once released its not usually applied again until I park up.

Since 2005 until 2013 I've had several VW group cars with electronic handbrakes, excellent pieces of technology, Skoda should have fitted it years ago.

I now have a 'lever' I need to use in my Superb when I want to park, levers go back to cars of the early 1900's, so about time they modernised this particular piece of equipment.

Like my last Passat CC if you have DSG with electronic handbrake, auto hold and hill hold you'll wonder why all cars aren't like this. It makes it effortless to drive.

On the Passat as long as you select 'Auto Hold on' as the default setting in the maxidot you never need to touch it, it just does it all for you. Park up, turn the ignition off it applies the handbrake, drive off it releases the handbrake. So simple.

I've had 3 passats and 3 insignias with electric handbrake and it's something I miss with my superb.

My Dad (RIP) had it on his Merc...I liked it.

Definitely NOT a fan. Will be a decider in not changing to a Mk 3. Had a really bad experience of the elec handbrake on hired Passat, which wouldn't release properly. Have hated them ever since. Stop / Start is the same, they are all too easy to fool into cutting out just as you want the engine to work - e.g. pulling onto a roundabout.

Does the XF have auto hold on the EPB?

When itest drove the XF I never touched the EPB as had never used one before, was still getting used to auto boxes, and was on my own in the car. Never stopped for long enough anyway. Dealer just told me to put the drive selector in park when i got back.

If it does have the auto hold feature, and it was in operation, then it must have activated a couple of times during the drive, and I never noticed it. So id say thats pretty good.

I wouldnt even know how to do a handbrake turn with a conventional handbrake, so nothing that will worry me.

Dont intend to start now either. Want to walk out the car, not carried out in a box :D

As far as I could tell, the box was linked to the EPB and automatically applied when stopped.

I drove an XF a few months back and this is exactly how it seemed to operate (unless I missed something).  Basically, you didn't have to do anything and the brake applied/released itself even on gradients.  It was quite seamless actually.  I wasn't overly impressed with the XF automatic box though!

:o Really?

Best auto box I've ever used - 8 speed auto mated to the 2.2 diesel, was absolutely sublime IMO

Well that tells you how good it is, because the ZF mated to the 3l V6 is even better. As smooth as silk. With the 2.2 it gets lost in certain situations, but still an awesome box.

Well if so, then that was an amazing parking brake. With the hill hold control on the Octy, you can sometimes feel it releasing. Nothing of the sort when i was in the XF, hence not realising it had such a function.

I take it you were driving the 2.2 diesel? Probably the lower powered one?

Dont think anyone moans about the ZF box if mated with the V6

Yeah, it was the lower end version alright and it just dragged it a bit.  I can imagine the V6 with that box must be sweet alright!

Whilst i still say the auto box is very good with the 2.2, it is no better than say the Mazda 6 auto I drove once. With the V6 it beats the Mazda hands down. Sweet car full stop.
