Smart Link AMA (ask me anything)

Do any of you guys use an old phone that is continually connected in the car?

I was thinking I may try this when I get a new phone. Just leave a sacrificial one in the car for Smart Link duties, and connect my main phone via Bluetooth for taking calls, if it can be done .

If you are using smartlink it stops the ability to connect to more than one phone (the smartlink phone) via Bluetooth unfortunately. You either have 2 phones through Bluetooth, or one phone through smartlink.

  • OK, now I have a car with smart link sitting outside I can contribute something more than speculation to this thread.   Picked up the car yesterday and tried with both my work and my personal phone

  • aha! Do you know I never looked!    I'll have a look later on after work. Amundsen does show nav on the maxidot, not sure about google maps.  Can't emphasise enough how impressed I am with the whol

  • Oh I forgot to say, nothing from smartlink is shown on the maxi dot ('the little screen ') Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk

And on top of that it doesn't work (more often than not) if the phone is connected before the unit starts.

I thought along the same lines but I don't think it's reliably possible.

Good to know. There goes that idea then!

Think I'll just get a phone holder put in then to make the connection a bit more effortless.

Anyone having the radio volume drop intermittently for a few seconds and then return to normal? I always have my phone connected via android auto and it does this every minute or so. Happens when using Google play music too.

I played around with a few car settings but found nothing that fixed it.

I had that occasionally it was whenever the phone had a notification (sms or email etc) , then I noticed the phone was asking to give access to the car for those, ticked that box and now it doesn't interrupt the radio any more.

[emoji35] [emoji35] [emoji35] Not what I wanted to read. Typically I have two phones connected: my iPhone for podcasts and my work phone for calls. I was so chuffed when I found I could do this.

I guess I'll leave Smart Link on the order as I'm sure it will be useful, but I can't help feeling mildly annoyed.

just connect the iphone via bluetooth or an audio cable to play the podcasts and have the work phone for calls. When you're not workign then you can have the iphone available via the smartlink. Smartlink I find very useful indeed, just having the ability to google stuff or send and receive texts without faffing about with the phone plus the maps, spotify etc etc I really do use it a lot

Yep, I second what domhnall said! If only a short journey I might not use smartlink, but it still gets used a hell of a lot. The googling/replying to texts/whatssap with voice is really good, I think the Google lady has only misheard me a couple of times

I wish I could share your enthusiasm...

650 mile round trip over the weekend and over the 3 days of driving Android Auto successfully connected twice :(

I think I have finally worked out what is causing my issues. Reset my phone and slowly reinstalled everything making sure to check Android Auto was connecting properly each time... The culprit was...

My Pebble Smart Watch!

The constant Bluetooth connection on the watch must conflict with Android Auto Bluetooth some how. Anyway it just looks like I need to remember to disconnect my watch every time I go to connect my phone to the car...

With Tasker and the secure settings plugin you can set up a task that will disconnect your Pebble when, for example, you are connected to your car's Bluetooth or when android auto app runs.

Mmm interesting! I use locale, so wonder if there is a setting to fit it working there hadn't thought of that.

The blurb says it's compatible with both Tasker and Locale so you might be in luck.

What's the deal with connecting the phone every time? Currently I:

1. Connect phone to USB cable.

2. Select smart link icon on head unit.

3. Select the device (phone) I want to connect, and click OK.

4. Phone then connects, sometimes.

Is it the same process for you guys? Does the system not remember a phone that has been used previously and connect automatically? I find it a bit of a faff to connect, and can be temperamental at times. Good when it works though.

Thanks for any advice.

If you wait long enough before plugging the usb lead into your phone it should automatically have loaded Android auto when you select smartlink. I've started leaving it till I'm out of the estate/office park before plugging in.

Thr headunit takes a few seconds to boot up. I normally turn the key to on, put on the seatbelt, start the car, turn off stop/start and then plug it in. Works 90% of the time.

Thanks guys.

Does this then mean that no manual intervention is required - the car just recognises that a phone is connected, and defaults to smart link, if installed?

I have seen that with mine too (when it worked) sometimes when you plugged it in the smartlink icon would just change to the Android Auto icon without needing to do any additional "connecting" steps.

I suspect it is something installed on your phone that is conflicting Holam, the fact that I was able to get the same model of phone working with the same cable suggests it is nothing to do with the car or the cable. Maybe the best thing is to reset the phone (do your backup first) and then reinstall app by app until it stops working?

Apologies if this has been answered already, but I placed an order for 2016 vRS estate on Saturday, hoping that it would work with CarPlay (as advertised on Apple's website for 2016 models.)

Am I correct in thinking that I need to get my dealer to add 'Smartlink' as an option on the build, and that the set-up doesn't support CarPlay?

I am already very confused and my car won't even be with me until March!

Paul

Yep, unless it's been changed very recently; you will have to ask for it to be added as an option

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has used a google (well LG) Nexus 5x with Smartlink? I currently use it with  a Samsung Galaxy S4 which works well (once it connects) I asked customer service and they referred me back to the mirrorlink website that has (in its own words) an incomplete list of compatible devices! I understand I would need new cables for the Nexus as its the new USB C etc

i have a nexus 5x which works ok with bluetooth, apart from not sending texts from the the admunsen head unit (not sure why - have paired and repaired to no avail)

can't get android auto to work with the 5x when plugged into the car at all though :(

don't want to pay for smartlink only to find the nexus 5x is incompatible

I will have SmartLink enabled later this week and my better half has a Nexus 5X so I will try and report back how it works.

It should work since both Android Auto and the Nexus are Google developed.

My biggest concern is that the 5X has USB-C and is pretty power hungry and the USB socket in the car can't deliver enough power.

Have you android auto installed on the 5x? You need smartlink for android auto to work too - I'm guessing that may be your issue?
