That was just the radio, I'm in Scotland not the Czech Republic

So, is radio controlled outside of Android Auto?

  • OK, now I have a car with smart link sitting outside I can contribute something more than speculation to this thread.   Picked up the car yesterday and tried with both my work and my personal phone

  • aha! Do you know I never looked!    I'll have a look later on after work. Amundsen does show nav on the maxidot, not sure about google maps.  Can't emphasise enough how impressed I am with the whol

  • Oh I forgot to say, nothing from smartlink is shown on the maxi dot ('the little screen ') Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk

Yes, I think the plan for Android Auto is to eventually replace your whole in car entertainment and take over a/c type duties all within the same interface. But at the moment it's just music and maps

I had a play with Android auto lastnight ( my wifes S4 upgraded to Lollipop).

It took a lot of messing about to connect (errors failing to connect).

During the device connecting process it gets the phone to down load Android Auto App, this then in turn install maps, music & Google now (i think).

The one big thing I found was the lenght of time it took the headunit to see the device after it was plugged in.

Mirrorlink didnt work, but the S4 isnt on the supported list.

I tried to film the connection, unfortunately the errors broke up the video.

I downloaded android auto before the car arrived. Just plugged it in, dismissed the safety warnings and off we went

You can, buy a MIB2 unit, a new CAN Gateway, a new BCM and then about 10 hrs of dealer labour charges and you can have it :)

skoda UK say you cannot do this. Other countries seem to be saying it will be available later but no one really knows

My Skoda Octavia Greenline III was built on 22nd June 2015 and I get delivery next week, 4th August 2015.

It comes with the Bolero unit. Will this car have smartlink installed? The dealer showed me the car in the compound, but had no key for it.

Looking through the window, i saw the bottom left button the Bolero has VOICE  on it, if that helps!

smart link is a chargeable extra, if you oaid the £150 for it then you will get it, if you didn't specify it and pay for it then no, you won't have it. The head units all look the same regardless of what options you have added by way of smart link and smart gate

Not to rub salt in the wounds of those of you waiting on smartlink activations, but picked up my new RS on Friday and I must say I am well impressed with the carplay portion of smartlink, I don't have android so can't comment on that. I wasted days getting an SD card ready with album art etc but oh what a waste of time I now have access to all my music with artwork through the carplay music app from my phone (128gb iPhone 6+), I couldn't afford the amundsen upgrade but Apple Maps does the job for when i get lost, admittedly I've only tested it and I knew where I was going. Also have access to my podcasts and audio books etc. System seems pretty accurate in dictating and reading back messages, but you can't view the message text on the screen for safety reasons etc. Overall its very responsive and was a doddle to setup, just connect the phone via cable and click connect on the bolero screen. looking forward to more Carplay compatible apps to be released.

Got my car yesterday. Initially Android Auto wouldn't work with my Nexus5 on the first cable I tried but swapped for another one and it's working fine. Apple Car Play also works with my wife's 5s.

Bothe those systems plus the memory card and standard Amundsen nav and it's difficult to know which one to try first! (sticking with Amundsen)

Will post more when I have a better play.

I'm liking android auto a lot, I used Google maps to find places in the last week and its been faultless.

I am having trouble the last few days with my phone though. It just doesn't want to connect and takes a lot of messing about for it to work. Nearly upgrade time anyway if it doesn't start playing nice.

Google maps are only any use as long as you can maintain a data connection. Out here in the sticks you can get horribly lost quite easily.

There are other phone based nav systems that rely on cached maps on the device and only need a satellite fix to work.

NavMii is an example, problem is that it is not compatible, with Android Auto.

So long as I've had a signal while I was planning the route, I've not had any trouble using Google maps for navigation over the last four years, including travel in mid and North Wales and the Lake District, and through areas where I know there is no signal, unless I deviated from the planned route where there was no signal. It seems to cache enough information to get through. There's been once or twice when I've come across a closed road and not been able to use the phone to find an alternative route because of a lack of signal.

I seem to recall that one of the newer features of Google Maps is the ability to download a map to the device - aka Here Maps. Obviously having no data signal will remove the dynamic (traffic) re routing ability but not the ability to find a different route if you've deviated from the initial directions.

I would try a different cable, the first cable I used didn't work, second one worked first time.

Didn't work at all or was temperamental?

First cable didn't work at all. Second much shorter cable (an old Nokia one I have!) was much better. Longer HTC third cable is a better length but seems to require a couple attempts at connecting.

It's the couple of attempts at connecting is what is plaguing me at the moment. I'm using an older Samsung cable with a Galaxy Note 4 and it's hit and miss. I might try the charger cable today and see how that goes. If it's better I'll grab another one then.

Didn't even dawn on me that it might be the cable to be honest.

My phone (s4) seems to have a dodgy socket, keeps disconnecting when driving. Upgrade due in two weeks so will see what to go for then.

last night I borrowed a couple of phones to test.

Samsung Galaxy S5 - could not make it work despite it having a "mirror link" function built in

HTC M8 - worked using mirror link. Didn't have time to try to make it use android auto so I'm not sure if it would use that. Android Auto is a much clearer and easy to use interface.
