Thinking of buying a Macbook

Featured Replies

Erm, there's been one iPhone launch every year since the 3GS. Not every couple of months.

Hardware is usually released once a year, in October I think

I know what hes tryna say though. There isnt much between the models.

I dont worry though. I tend to hust get the latest model whenever my contract ends tbh. Im not too bothrred about it.

I have looked at other stuff but not alot takes my fancy.

Maybe im just outdated on other stuff and occustomed to ios.

(Sorry if this doesnt make too much sense, eyes are glued to the senior TT and my thumbs working on its own nearly haha)

I've a 2012 MacBook Pro, which was our first Apple product.  It replaced three previous laptops and a full sized Dell PC.

Have to say I won't be going back to PC & Windows.  It's never skipped a beat and is simply brilliant in my opinion.  I had an issue with WiFi dropping out after I updated to Yosemite, but that's been the only gripe and it was soon fixed.

The more i read the more i want one tbh.

Get the bike serviced n then all funds chucked in i think.

Could service the bike myself n save a few quid but i like it to all be thoroughly checked over once a year tbh.

Is anyone running anti virus software on their macbooks?

I know youre less likely to get a virus than windows but do you still use it? If so, which version?

I run ClamXav (iirc) every now and then to spot anything untoward, but I think I've captured one thing once when someone opened a dodgy email.

Cheers guys. Appreciate the feedback.

(:

I've used a 2011 macbook pro 13 i5 for the past few years...in short never goes wrong - does 99% of what windows machines do but better - syncs with my iPhone 6 within seconds & free operating system upgrades for the last two systems.

The only thing i have changed was the 320 hdd & swapped for a 500gb sshd, so now runs lot faster & cooler / it took me approx 3 months to fully get my head around the apple way from never using them before & mostly used windows.

They do seem like a no brainer now for me haha

I got a Macbook Pro 13" 2012 when they came out to use photoshop on.

Being a windows man (and a windows techy) I could not get on with the OS, and I tried for about a year!

It now bootcamps into Win 7 Pro...

Not yet mate, but i know exactly what i want now, the Macbook Pro 13". I5 processor, 250gb, 8gb ram. The £999 one.

But im up to 2 things at the moment.

1. Saving up. And a £180 service on the motorbike has taken that back a step.

2. Having a word with a couple of people and trying to save myself a few quid in a few different ways.

Salesman here there and everywhere keep trying to push the finance option, much the same as when buying a vehicle, but im not interested tbh. The only out going each month is my phone contract and i want it to stay that way. Atleast until im in a position to get a house haha.

Ill certainly let you know when i finally take delivery, or go and collect. Should be within a month im hoping (:

Cheers (:

I'm thinking of replacing our five year old Windows 7 PC with a Macbook Pro when it finally gives up the ghost.... Or maybe sooner.... Uses would be internet and word processing.... Along with photo editing in Photoshop too. The only games i play run fine on the PC which has a GTS240 1gb card in which looking at benchmark scores is slightly worse than the onboard graphics in the Macbook Pro???

Anyway for my use would i see much benifit between the 13" 2.9ghz dual core i5 with 8gb RAM and the 15" 2.2ghz quad core i7 with 16gb RAM?...... I've also noticed a couple of the 2014 retina 13" MBPs with the 2.6ghz dual core i5, 2.8ghz dual core i5 & 2.9ghz dual core i7 processors in the apple outlet for between £1109 and £1279.

So.... Anyone a little more savvy with processors etc.... able to answer my question?

Wish i could, but im not clever enough ;).

What i will say, the reviews ive read that have tested each model of the pro state that each step up in processor gives very marginal increase in speed output.

The display size is clearly just a personal preference.

Reading through that, it might depend how heavy you are on the photoshop? The rest of the things the lower spec of the 2 would be more than fine id of though

Generally speaking, games don't need more than an i5, that is 4 cores is enough. You get that from the i5 and the i7. However not all i7's are the same. some i7's are very similar to the i5, 2 main processors and 4 cores. The nice i7's are 4 processors giving 8 cores, a quad i7, these have Q in the model number.

The only thing I don't know for your scenario is how photoshop uses CPU. On my dev laptop a thinkpad x230 which is an i5 I run alot of tabs in chrome, firefox with tools like gimp ( photoshop ), email etc... it's rare for me to see the load on the CPU's rise, except maybe when I'm synching 60Gb of files.

Photoshop then, layers and images = memory to open I'd imagine. Test, go to apple store, take a usb pen with photos and open them using there graphics tool, see how many open on the 13 and 16 before things go sluggish. Then open a safari window and head to the bbc... now ctrl click the news link till you can't see the tab's x any more. Open another, do the same... you get the idea. Flick back to the photos and edit one. One of those machines should still be usable :)

It's ram you'll need. It works on 8, but at 16 I can relax at having 40+tabs open one one chrome of many over many workspaces.

Screen, will you, do you use with external monitor.

Mobility, do you mostly use at home , or travelling. Is travelling in car or plane.

Speed wise 2.2Ghx to 2.9Ghz isn't that much. In 2006 processors were around 2.6Ghz... what has changed since is memory speed, disk speeds and connecting bits n bobs to talk to components much faster. That rise means a flagship MAC in 2006, 4 processors, 2.6Ghz intels best, ram trays etc is now eclipsed in benchmarks. Benchmarks don't really help in day to day.

So no you won't see much of a difference in CPU terms between them, however at 16Gb of ram you will feel it when loading multiple apps.

Thanks for the detail in this post ColinD.

I'm running an older X220 i5 with 8GB..... looking at upgrade paths if possible.

X230 with 16GB and i7 core (perhaps refurb stock) are looking favourably priced.

(But I think i'll need a new dock as well; which isn't a big issue as such.)

I mention this as SWMBO is on an older gen MacBook and we are deciding best route going forward... so following this thread

I'd of brought the 220 if one was sensibly priced at the time. I got mine after the fail that is the 240. so 230 prices and 220 spiked a bit.

I'd stick, drop 16Gb and an SSD. Unless you truly need the GHz cycles or a i7Q##### for 8 cores.

If storage is an issue, then USB3 really helps, that might be a reason to jump up. So I have my pics/music on a USB3 drive, nearly as quick as the NAS, it's a spinning rust drive that I synch off to the nas. Can't afford a big SSD for it yet.

New laptop screens are very nice and it's something I do miss from my mac ownership days. Others are catching up.

Thanks again for the info.

Yes - SSD and IPS screen are on the wish list.

Current X220 is running a 750GB hybrid drive; but its not really a true performer - SSD definitely required.

The annoyance is that my work laptop died 7 weeks or so back;

so I got a new i7, 16GB DDR, and SSD as the replacement...... which is lovely!

So trying best I can to mirror this spec at home, if at all possible.

The time of the multicore processor is soon... I was just toying with a test of one of these parallella boards, 16cores (64 soon) in the space of your phone crazy. But it's a future thing...

Cheers for the reply Colin. I'm not a power user when it comes to tabs only the or four at most. Photoshop wise again not a power user but do sometimes have up to 15-20 images open but pretty rarely.

Display wise I think I would prefer the 15" but if the plans go as I would like there would be the option of using a large TV display when required sometimes. I think I may look on the Apple outlet store and go for one of the models on there setting as they confess with the same warranty and then the extra cost of the 15" models is only around £100 or so more than the 13" models.

Bloody bike costing me at the moment. Service, then discovered the chains got a tight spot, so a new one is required!

Otherwise id have a macbook by now! :( haha.

Nevermind. Got my final exams on my Gas Safe course in a few weeks, so aslong as i pass out (fingers crossed!!) it can be a present to myself (:
