I guess that not so many are remapped. By and large the folks buying them are not really in that demographic. 
 

I have a 272 primarily because I wanted a Superb but didn’t want a diesel. And ideally I needed to tow with it.  So the 272 was the only choice. 
 

I find myself very rarely booting it , at present I’m on an economy drive to see what I can realistically get by driving NSL - 42.5 back from BHX to Nottingham last night for example.   I’m doing many more miles than I thought in a new job and that difference between the 34mpg of the 272 and say 55 from a diesel e class starts to look attractive even if the performance will vastly differ. 
 

Love the car and like not having diesel clatter but not enough to live with a 20mpg gap if I am doing 25k a year.

I drive about 21k a year - mostly on a 40 mile each way motorway commute. As I get VW Group management scheme cars, I drive the cars from delivery mileage up to about 8k before they get changed. 

 

My last Superb 272 averaged 36.76mpg during the time I had it, and a Superb 190 DSG diesel (FWD) I previously had averaged 51.22mpg under the same conditions. Both measurements are calculated from total fuel purchased and total mileage, rather than the on-board computer. 

 

Using these figures, over a mileage of 25k the cost of fuel difference over a year is just less than £1k (or about £18.75 a week). 

 

The diesel irritated me with easy wheelspin from rest in damp conditions, poorer refinement and the fact it had to be thrashed to make decent progress. I never really drove the 272 very hard, but I appreciated the way that the powertrain took everything that I needed from it in its stride. 

 

£18.75 a week sounds like a fair amount, but it's minuscule compared with depreciation for example. I'd personally have paid this extra for the benefits of the 272, but it depends on your individual circumstances. 

Lots of sense in that of course, I’m in for £400 a month depreciation.  Just that’s hidden 😀

Good points made above really switched me away form diesel in 2015. Doing 12-13,000 miles P.A. I was getting 45mpg from my Vrs 181bhp diesel with the 6 speed DSG box yet paying more per litre than 95 unleaded so bought a Superb 1.4TSi manual in 2016 and averaged 50mpg over 16,000 miles and loved the refinement and cheaper cost of fuel. However with just 148bhp it was low on the excitement factor and in 2017 I realise now (hindsight is a wonderful thing) I should have bought a nearly new Superb 280 to replace it which ticks all the boxes for me with my annual mileage. The bonus by waiting however is that the 7 speed DQ381 is better than the 280's older 6 speed DSG and at 70mph in 7th it is doing just 2,000rpm and I do use the coasting function a lot in Eco mode which I don't believe to be a crime as the car is getting a diet of Tesco Momentum to compensate. Will compare journey to Essex on Tuesday against return economy and the map will probably hardly effect the difference.

Keep us up to date. I've been in one many times as a friend owns one. Utterly fantastic in all stages of driving it. I cannot believe how great it is! 

 

The exterior is a little lairy for me, but once you're sat in it and moving...wow, just wow!

 

Definitely don't judge it purely on its looks

Yeah it looks cack but function over form. It’s a proper aero/downforce affair, not just something glued on for the sake of calling it the ‘hot version’. I actually like them more for being a bit fugly. Like I said, guilty pleasure. 

 

I bet when you’re going over Buttertubs Pass you wouldn’t give a toss how it looks.

Better invest in a nice pair of driving gloves because I bet that Titanium gear knob feels a bit cold in the winter and a tad hot in the summer. Much stirring of knob required to really enjoy that fine engine.

Heater on in winter and AC on in winter makes short work of a cold/hot knob 😂

 

It's definitely not a car suited to an auto. I'd have a manual any day! The rev-matching is fantastic too. 

 

The DSG suits the relaxed nature of the Superb of course 👍

I decided to remove the alloy wheels today, just to give them a really good clean in advance of the arrival of a couple of EZ wheel brushes arriving tomorrow.

The good news is that the way Pryke had looked after the car from new, the back of the wheels and rims were in very good shape, with some corrosion starting on a couple of the back of the spokes on two of the wheels. 

When I removed the OSF wheel (and yes, they were all bloody difficult to get off, as all the hubs had rusted the wheels on solid!) I found the stub on the shock, into which the electrical connection for the DCC is plugged, is rusting badly enough to begin to split the metal nicely. The NSF is the same. This is a four year old car, and I’d say in a couple more years, maybe less, the metal at the plug end will be splitting even more, possibly allowing water ingress into the electrics. I attach a couple of pics for your opinion and look forward to your views.

Wire brushing and 2 thick coats of waxoyl might delay further corrosion for a while ?

Yeah, I coated them in grease rather than waxoyl but thanks. 

Hi all, Looking for a second hand 280 and have found one with around 53k miles but no proof of DSG or Haldex oil changes (otherwise it has full Skoda history at 9k, 18k, 34k, 41k & 51k)

 

Getting these done is obviously fairly cheap and easy, Would you buy this car without these being done in the past?

Is it being sold via a dealer or privately?  So what is the service interval on the DSG/Haldex; I thought it was 30k?

Is there one previous owner - can you speak with them? Anyway, it seems from what I’ve read, provided its working OK, so it isn’t gunked-up you shouldn’t have a problem. My daughter has a 2008 Freelander which has done 60k and that’s only just had the Haldex and gearbox oils changed for the first time in 12 years but prior to this, the 4x4 worked perfectly, as did the gearbox changing. Our 280 has covered 22,250 and the Haldex oil hasn’t been changed, but it’s due a service in Jan and will probably get it done then, maybe before. Anymore info on the car - age, colour, spec?

  • Interval for both is around 40k
  • Two owners before this one, I have messaged the previous on Facebook but unlikely to reply
  • Its a 65 Plate L&K 280 Hatch, generally appears in good condition and has otherwise had all its services at Skoda Dealers with proof - one invoice mentions the DSG and Haldex is due, but the next service doesn't mention it or show costings (assuming the owner and dealer missed it).

According to skoda the haldex is at 3 years. Not mileage dependant. Plenty will disagree! Thats a very early 280! 

Mine was high 40's at 2yrs old and no changes. Got DSG done straight away and haldex early by time but mileage seemed sensible to do it. its been fine since and didn't have issues before. 

5 services seems quite diligent when it could have only 3 if kept on long life. Life's a risk. Does the price reflect the uncertainty? For me it did.

 

They are great cars if its what you want and expect. And you like suprising people 😉

I'm not sure on the services, its essentially been done yearly as opposed to the usual 18k intervals.

 

Its the cheapest 280 I have seen for sale, so think its worth it. Just wanted to know if it was a clear cut yes/maybe/no but that is obviously for me to decide!

Yes, it is. As others have said of their 280’s, without doubt this is the best car I’ve ever owned and it sounds like the one you’re proposing to buy has been well cared for and at a great price too. You could just get the gearbox and Haldex serviced when you’ve bought it; perhaps find out the cost and ask the current owner to contribute. 
I was very lucky, buying a members car and he’d bought a SUK 5 year warranty at time he purchased it new.

I’ve already had the MFSW switches changed and they’d failed and the bonnet release fixed too. I recently noticed there’s a problem with the window regulator on the front passenger NS; it’s very noisy when its rising - and it also the “normal” squeaking coming from the suspension. Yesterday, I took it to Lookers in Guildford. The result is they’re changing both window regulators and the anti-roll bar bushes. Brilliant! 

I just checked with Skoda and the gearbox oil (and filter apparently - didn’t think it had one?) change is £225. Haldex oil change is £90. 

Sounds like you are fairly local to me as well! I would probably use Skoda in Aldershot if they do servicing.

 

I'm aware the jobs are cheap to have done, just the missed interval I was asking about really but as you say - without looking inside the gearbox there isn't a way to spot any issues!

Could be - we're in Surbiton. I looked at a 280 at Skoda Aldershot back in March.

 

Lookers were OK, but I don't know how much longer they're going to be in business, as they've dumped 1,500 jobs so far and they keep getting bad news. See here...

Allams are actually the closest but I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, having ripped me off royally on the MKII.

We have 2 cars with Haldex units, both have had oil + strainer * pump cleaned (removing the accumulated sludge from the pump & strainer, which VW & Skoda dealers will not undertake....) at the 3 year point, not on mileage, circa 13000 miles. The most recent invoice from the well-respected VAG independant was £141.50, inc. VAT.

 

If you've purchased a high-mileage 280, it would be my first priority re. servicing.

 

As for DSG oil & filter, that's more a mileage thing rather than age, I had my Superb done (at the same independant) when it was 6 years old & @ 28,271 miles. 

The cost, in June 2018 was £136.18, inc.VAT.

 

Hope this helps, I'd search for a good local independant, doesn't have to be a Skoda specialist, VAG experience / knowledge is applicable across all 4 brands.

Thanks, I probably would get these done at a specialist actually and leave the main service for Skoda (just for service history's sake, but could also go independent for this I guess).

Don't know where you work Max, but if you're on the Waterloo run, there is a very well respected Indie VAG specialist in Surbiton, right next to the Station called VAG Tek.  The only reason I've always used main dealers for servicing is for out of warranty goodwill; served me very well on the Superb MK1 when the oil pump failed at 99,000 miles; SUK coughed-up for the parts, which ran into '000's and I paid for the labour, which was £750.   

Has anyone got a dtuk pedal box attached to their remapped 272/280?

Some of the parameters on my 'individual' mode are set to sport, some to normal.

I would like a quicker pedal response time, but I don't want sports mode, and I thought a pedal box may be the way to go.

Have you any thoughts on this please.
