If 20k miles I'd guess 21k for it. Good price that I'll pay. Anything less and I'll be all over it if in the market lol.

Ok well it was 22,250 (tank of fuel and a door bin thrown in.... woohoo!), 19,850 with trade in. So looks like I've either overpaid a bit or just got a bang average deal. I can live with that, time to just enjoy the beast now 😀

Will add a few photos to the picture thread shortly.

When the car is on your driveway already, it's too late to ponder whether or not you got a good deal

Good car, nice spec too.  Just enjoy it now

That's still good deal considering the low mileage.

You'll have much fun in it.

Given the choices for a driver who enjoys A/B road and lots of cruise controlled motorway in-between, the odd trip to the french alps loaded up...

and they are all within a few quid of each other...

I think the vRS would be a better A/B road.

I think the 280 would be nicer overall.

I think the L&K would be the most fiscally sensible.:dull:

A drive down to chamonix in the 280 will cost (roughly ) 35quid more than the L&K Octy by RAC reckoning :D

  2. SportlinePlus Hatch 270PS Petrol Nov'18 @7k | heated screen, rear wiper, light assist, dcc, lane change, rear cam, virt pedal, canton... |
  3. vRS245 Estate 18/19 | virt cockpit, adaptive blah blah...

Which one... 20k per annum.

@20k PA it has to be the Superb.

Far more refined.

The fact you are asking on the 280 thread makes me think you know the right answer 🙂 Superb all the way. Mine is an awesome cruiser with an A/B road ability that will certainly exceed my driving ability. The 4x4 means I've never unstuck mine and it really does inspire confidence.

Also, controversial I guess but I prefer the look of the Superb.

;) I think I do know the answer :D I had a MKII PD170 4x4 before remapped and it didn't want for much tbh.

I'm a little hung up on DCC or not. Plan is to keep for 8+years. Dcc could cost me dearly, and if I was desperate a set of new coily would be cheaper but rather fixed :D Testing one next week with DCC... I feel I'm being tempted, there are plenty of choices without DCC ;)

Edited by ColinD

I keep cars for a long time normally, last one was 13 years.  I went with stock suspension on my sportline for just this reason, felt it would be complex and expensive to fix if it failed in 8 years time.  I bought new so had the choice, but there must be plenty of secondhand ones around if you did want to avoid DCC.  I tow with mine and do a lot of loaded motoring  so the suspension probably gets more abuse than normal.

Ride wise, I'm very happy with the stock sportline suspension, it seems pretty much perfect for what I want to do with the car. I haven't driven a DCC equipped car to know for certain, but I suspect that DCC would be 'better' in that it gives you a choice of modes, but the stock suspension is actually pretty good anyway.

I would not normally have specified DCC on my car, because of the additional expense and unnecessary complexity. However, it came on the demo I bought.

I like it. There is a noticeable difference between the softest and hardest settings. And I have an Individual Mode set up for most of my driving. Low speed over potholed urban roads and speed bumps is pretty cushy on in the Comfort Mode, as is motorway cruising on smooth roads. Sport Mode is mandatory when hustling it down the twisty A/B roads.

The cost of repairs is something I didn't worry about until I realised that the car is good enough to keep for several years. If I was trying to keep the cost down, I would do without. But, ACC is a must now I've had it.

Newbie69 has a set for sale but he is in Norway I think.

The DCC is good.

If they wore out then I would simply code it out with VCDS and fit a set of Bilsteins.

Superb 280 if you can live with the fuel costs. (seeing as you mentioned fuel...it's not bad for the performance on tap!)

I've sat in a 245 vRS hatch at my local dealers and coming from the Superb I found it a step down.  That's not me slating the Octavia, it's a nice car.  I just think the Superb is nicer, as it should be as you pay a little more for it!  It's function over form but it's a nice place to munch up the miles.  More 'grown up' is how it looks/feels to me vs. the Octavia.

I didn't spec DCC on mine as I really couldn't tell the difference between the ride of a 220TSI with DCC in Sport mode and 280 without DCC.  Though that was in a 30 min test drive of each.  I also plan to keep this car for a good few years and, as Edwards has mentioned, I figured it's an expensive component to maintain in the longer term (I suppose that's true of Haldex and DSG but you can't change that!)

The Sportline isn't as sporty as it's naming would suggest but it's still capable and fun when the road/mood takes you.  I've changed the diff and haldex settings on mine via OBD11 and have found it does make the car a little bit more pointy in the bends.  I've recently fitted Michelin PS4's too, which make a significant difference to how the car feels too.   I think Skoda have got the car just right, not a world beater in any single regard but competent/better than average in near enough every key area and all those little things add up to a really good package.  So whilst there's compromises, there's not too many as to totally ruin the car.  It ticks every box for me.

He sold those I believe.  I'm on the look out for a set or even a second set of Vegas.  IIRC @Gizmo was going to offer me his set of spares at a terrific, too good to turn down price?!

I think I can stand the fuel cost, planet busting it's not, eco warrior it's not.  I've done most of my calcs based on 30mpg anyway.

Yes I'm sure sans dcc it would be fine, the old eleg was fine. Even if i did seem to wear the rear pads n discs out; good old esp and backroads :D

If we cast back 5 years, 10, even though today it's not pointy hot hatch; didn't dare go and try a renault rs, but the sportline is probably as capable if not more so than a mk1 octy vrs...

maybe. Find out soon. Anyway the dam roads are to busy south of the great glen. Thats why all I actually want is active cruise :D

I had a 230 for a week; skoda press for a review, then they closed the order book; a short review... and I remember thinking lovely when cracking on, concerned it was to easy to drive around corners.  But also a little loud, plus there is possibly a 260 vRS in 2020, an I'm pretty sure 230+ in the fronts on this stuff is too much to just go when ever... civic maybe the exception.

So to get to the 300+ club ;) it was AWD or RWD.

I saw the chatter about the haldex settings, think I'll be up for a bit of that ;) Never got to it on the MKII.

Michelin PS4S and 330+bhp work just fine on the 245. Not sure a Superb even with 4WD could reach 117mph on the Donington pit straight.:D

  • Administrators

yeah it's more the -10degrees on the A82 at 61mph I'm worried for.

Interesting experiment to try though :D  245fwd, 280awd weight, trans losses are prob close to dead even on a dry track on eql boots/skills.

Although I know the old mk1 octy remapped 150 > 190ish wasn't a match on Pembrey for a vRS, gearing ratios were crippling on full chat. However on the urban rallye course, gravel, 90' corners it excelled. Everything has it's  moment & place :D

You seem to have a rather interesting superiority/inferiority complex going on there, judging by your post history.

Owned plenty of Superbs. They are quiet and comfy but not something you want to take on a track session. Anyone ever posted a video on here except the 560bhp Santa Pod special which was replaced by a Fiat 500 Abarth presumably because it handles a bit better than the mad modded Superb.:blush

There is a left hand corner on my commute and gradually building up my nerve I can now take it at 78mph. Not sure I would want to try that in a Superb.;)

Why not... think about it, it's just physics, you can try it once. TBH it's the water, crap, ice, pheasants, cyclists... I can't recall the last time I looked at my speedo in a corner, too many other things going on...  I guess you're commuting in Germany btw :D anyway off topic slightly now... one last weekend on the T5 then it's dragon time.

By your own admission your username should be LAW BREAKER ☠️

Lots of others I could think of but for Briskoda rules. 😔

Here's some other guys who think speeding in inappropriate places is cool

FYI My sister and 2 others were killed instantly by a young guy speeding on his commute to work.

20 years ago, I survived when a young guy took a left hand corner, way too fast, and slewd into the other lane and straight head on into me. Fortunately I was in a much larger car than his

So no I'm not impressed.
