We have a holiday booked next year in Germany, & I'm wondering if a RHD Golf R is going to be a target for thieves over there.

Far, far less of a target than LHD, you can be pretty certain. Whereas Germans who own Porsches and other cars with similar steal-appeal wouldn’t dream of taking their cars to many locations – with Italy, for example, off the map completely – I know UK owners who have done so many times with no problems. Where would the thief sell your car? There wouldn’t be any takers for any of the usual (mainly eastern) markets.

As said many times before, one of the Superb 280's major appealing aspects is its stealthiness. The Sportline just undermines that.

Yes, it does polish up quite well.

you can still spec and order a new sportline 280 with lots of toys for under 30k - whether it gets cancelled is another thing...

Mind saying where ?

Thanks, makes sense.

In a sober colour the Sportline Superb isn't too obvious, IMVHO, & nowhere near as crass as the VW / Audi R-Lines & the Ford ST-Line range, they just look like the imitations that they are.

I got a good deal on an S-El Executive at Carfile

My 1.4 TSi SE was ordered via Carfile. My current Leon also came via Carfile. Their prices are good, you are the first registered keeper with no V5C delay. you pay the dealer direct and they have a 100% rock solid reputation.

Possibly true, but since a 280 Superb is almost anonymous ( 4x4 badges & different exhausts?), it's never going to attract much attention from the average car thief.

If you can live with the sheer size of the 'berb then it's going to be a great "Q" car, especially as it doesn't need to be driven hard to enjoy it.

i find that our R is reasonably discreet in "normal" driving, but there are places where I'd not want to park it overnight....

(I won't have the same worries if we decide to use our 5 year old Superb!)

I've not experienced any issues in Germany with parking and leaving the car having done so in Dussledorf, Trier and Koblenz.

The only thing I found is that you need to plan where you park but thats more to make sure that someone doesn't park too close to the drivers door as they don't think that the car they are parking next to could be RHD, mind you I bet thats the same for them when they come and park in the UK to be honest!

I just installed my Christmas present - a Racechip Response Control. I know it doesn't boost power in any way but it transforms the way the car drives. Very pleased with it and thanks to the guys on here who recommended it!

Just to add that I've seen plenty of Golf R's (Hatch and Estate) in Germany but not may Superb 3's ;)

We hired a Range Rover Sport TDV6 this time as neither my friend or I wanted the expense of winter wheels and tyres (his E93 M3 or my 280 TSI Superb) it went ok, a bit gruff when you gave it some, the 8-speed auto was nice and the interior was nice and comfy. The infotainment unit was a bit of a pain to use and slow to respond to inputs though.

post-61647-0-85045100-1483614810_thumb.jpg De-badged today and my thanks to micloi for his time and help with VCDS mods

^^ Much prefer the de-badged look.

micloi also did some VCDS stuff for me, good guy.

I am seriously considering a 280 sportline estate as a replacement for the ancient Vectra 2.0t Sri estate I have now. I have a couple of questions if I may:

  • Is the 4x4 'noticeable' when it kicks in? I had a journey in an old A4 quattro a few years back and didn't like the audible'clunk' as the rear wheels joined the party.
  • Those with a towbar - can the Skoda 'hidden' bar be used on the sportline?

Also, more general questions re: the sportline:

  • Are heated seats a necesary extra? the missus has them in her Yeti but that has full leather.
  • Does the sportline come with rear camera? I can't understand if that is part of the LED pack or not...

Cheers!

The rear view camera is a £.350 option on the Sportline, it says so in the brochure............

As for the heated seats, it's cold today & I'd not want to be without them, even though they might not be leather..

Our Golf has a very similar driveline to the 280 & we've never noticed it "kicking in" except the lack of wheel-spin from the front wheels when making a rapid departure.

The 280 wagon is a good car, it's just a bit too big for our needs. If we were offered a really nice used car at a silly price we might change our minds.......

Towbar, can't help you, never needed to tow anything!

My pleasure Phil, was great meeting you.

Ours are on 365 days a year as we both suffer with back problems... a heated lumbar support helps greatly! for that reason i wouldn’t buy a car without them.

Looks like I'll need to spec heated seats then.. can't gave the missus having more toys than me!

Good news re: the transmission noise. The A4 I recall was a bit elderly and had had a hard life, so perhaps a bit of an unfair comparison.

I haven't switched on the heated seats since testing them on day 1. The alcantara is nice and cosy as opposed to our other car's horribly cold leather. I do miss a heated steering wheel. If anything, it is my fingers that are frozen, first thing in the morning.

I thought that a heated steering wheel was available as an option now?!

No heated steering wheel option on the sportline.

No heated steering wheel option on the sportline.

Must only be for the standard steering wheel then.
