Rob's Ur Quattro

Featured Replies

Ken got there before me..

Heard it reported on the radio this morning leaving for work. I always have NZ as being the Ireland of the southern hemisphere.. get on with thine neighbour and dont get overly excited about anything in particular.

That even NZ can end up with people brainwashed by hatred into acting in such a violent manner.

Edit..  he was an Aussie it seems..

Back on its wheels at last!

  • Wento for a quick trip to the petrol station. Got sidetracked. I am loving this car! It sounds like it's gargling on the fuel not just drinking it, what an awesome sound!

Re-assembled everything, started the engine, ran it for 3-4 minutes. Oil leaking. Not sure here from. But the turbo was smoking! And the timing is not right - as soon as it gets warm the idle drops and it stalls, then it doesn't want to start. Time to admit I need help from someone who knows what they are doing.

I've had a lot going on at home and just haven't had the time or the energy to work on poor Rusty. So I've had to admit that the daily will be going on this Gumboot Rally. It just wasn't worth trying to rush things and potentially breaking down and not making it anyway. So, next time!

The context is sad, but the meme is funny :D

Well, that could be oil getting to the outside of the turbo housing from the rocker cover seal. Check those bolts aren't loose first.

Thanks to Wellington European for the loan of their smoke tester. It pointed me straight to the seal that I have totally left out. Not sure how that happened!

It runs much better and will warm start. Got an exhaust leak at the waste gate and it's still dripping oil when warm, and there are a couple of heat shields rattling. So I have work to do.

Really good, it's a great car for that sort of thing. Comfy, fast enough, even pretty economical on a long run. And there was 60km of gravel road, which was great fun.

Rusty will be tip top for next years

Backed Rusty out of the garage. This happened.

Not sure the water pump is even working properly. I drove down the street and back. Things are not right
I think it's time to get Rusty to Wellington European, and stop putting it off. Because I really don't want to pull it all apart again myself. But I don't think I can really afford that.

I did give it a wash though.

Is there a possibilty you could borrow a cooling system pressure tester from somebody over there Rob?. It would make life a lot easier to spot any leaks as the motor won't be running.

That sounds like a useful tool! Will investigate.

Just need time to start it now :D

That is a bit more of a meccano set than the pro kit, but it will do the job at the end of the day.

Just make sure you eliminate all air leaks at the tool joints before you go leak hunting or you could be chasing phantoms for hours.

Test the system cold, as more leaks tend to seal as the engine warms up, and make sure you don't pressurise the system higher than the cap running pressure or you will add to your issues

Good luck buddy.
