Kept up with a WRX

Featured Replies

Quite pleased with the Octy today :):) Was following an Impreza WRX on the way to work today when he saw me behind him and booted it - leaving a roundabout and entering a dual carriageway. So I decided to follow :D:D:D

The Octy kept up no problem - the WRX was trying as I could see the puffs of smoke when he changed gear. He couldn't get away, although I couldn't have passed him :o

No silly speeds involved - we never exceeded the NSL at any point. Honest!

Well chuffed with Darth :thumbup::thumbup:

So your Octy with 216bhp kept up with a 225bhp Impreza. Ummm, well done ... no really

9 bhp difference? 4WD transmission losses :D:D:D

Well, it is within the realms of possibility to keep up with it. Was it a classic or a bug/blobeye? Classics don't carry as much weight. You'd need a lot more power to overtake it though!

From a standing start the Octy would have no chance, but once rolling a standard UK WRX is a nice target - AWD transmission losses and weight can be a bummer, I'd have a go with one from a rolling start! Wouldn't even bother playing with a modded one, STi or any jap import though - would get wasted every time, especially with the jap gear ratios. Ah, I miss them so much!

The WRX would have had him in the twisties though. :D

It's funny coming from scoobynet to see Impreza vs M3/Evo/Porsche threads replaced with Skoda vs Impreza/Seat/Whatever. I guess one can never escape that on a car forum!

Perfectly plausible actually, many tuesday nights a while back a few of us octavia's would go our with some subarau's and the odd evo...never really left much gap or made much ground. However these were twisties and we were in 4x4 Octy's with trick gizmos and haldex. Huck joined us once or twice in his rs and was a little startled. FWD on partially wet roads meant a gap formed, but thats no fault of Huck...his destiny with the spirtual world is a way of yet.

There are a few factors over and above transmission losses, gearing and turbo. By time the wrx is spooled your already spooled and boosting so your hot on the heels or escaping. Over a straight they will real you in or leave you a bit or a lot depending on the length, but most back roads or even A roads don't really permit this without doing silly speeds.

Really the wrx's unless ppp'd are nothing special given todays hot hatch market, a mpv would keep up ffs...it's not right I know, but then neither are PD130' fabia's keeping up with octavia's, all be it a 1.4 :D I've test driven a std wrx as I was considering one, they feel far better but in an odd way, but were no quicker than I was repeating the test loop in my 4x4, I just rolled about a bit more.

Also you have to factor in driver *yawn*, yes I know but thats a difference and also balls on public road, chances are your either late for heaven or playing sensible and not pushing past the 8/10ths.

Oh and I've been in a 22B that nearly went up the bum of an Octavia Estate on braking...No abs and huge brakes on gravel dusted roads is proof, not all that glitters is gold.

@Margin,

I guess one could say they set a good benchmark in the late 90's, will be a while before they loose it totally, but with an mpv kicking out more bhp as std than a wrx, won't be long. I'd still like one, but not for use or living in this country.

You been out playing on the A9 again. Just one more mod and you'd have had him, 18" wheels perhaps as it's nearly Christmas.

With 216 bhp & 211 lb/ft once rolling I'd have been surprised if you didn't keep up.

2WD transmission losses opposed to 4WD, at silly speeds you would probably be quicker.

Nathan,

Nice sti badge ;)

Your not the enemy...we need to unite against people carriers and diesel's ;)

From a rolling start - the middle of the Kier roundabout on the A9

No silly speeds involved - honest :) Would I lie to you ? :D:D:D

Uphill, thats when you need a diesel. :)

Go for the exhaust. :D

One rule for one group and one rule for another. Surely if theres to be no fabia vs threads there shouldnt be octy vs threads. Tut Tut Tut

Well, it is within the realms of possibility to keep up with it.

Ummmm - that was my point. With 9bhp difference, plus the 4wd losses of the Impreza (up to 80bhp?), I would have been very surprised if you hadn't kept up! The WRX is typically putting out 150-160bhp at the wheels in standard form.....

Very true however it was never mentioned that he had a "race" or "beat" said WRX...just that he was pleasantly suprised at how well his Octy kept up.

Perhaps you could call what I have said a bit pedantic but it does come across differently and not at all Barryboy/****-ish....IMHO....which was the whole point of the "Fabia vs...." type thread prevention.

I too am slightly dissapointed that this thread has been allowed.

Tut tut indeed !

May i draw attention to Colins statement:

This is beginning to get out of hand...

the next thread i see relating to how your ikkle furby kept up with/beat a m3/integra/nsx/maclaren-merc/ferrari WHATEVER..

The thread will be deleted' date=' and you will have a official warning issued, repeat offenders will be banned.

That also goes for anyone who questions this decision.

you have been warned.

edited to add: the same goes for threads joking about it.[/quote']

Cool, I'm with you on that front then!

I had no problems catching and passing a blob-eye STI at the weekend, make of that what you will.

Also back when I had the CTR I found it was quicker from a rolling start than a bug-eye WRX.

May i draw attention to your own statements highlighting the same words:

:thumbdwn:

Jeez, get a life! Never having read the quoted thread I was unaware of it. I posted, in all innocence, that I was pleased that my humble Octy managed to keep up with an Impreza WRX. No racing, claims that I'd wiped the floor with it, or that it was a PPP STI and he couldn't get away.

This is, or was, a forum about cars. However, it seems to be getting taken over with threads about the love life of our junior members, what everyone had for tea, etc, etc.

I don't mind people posting about their love life, diet, etc, etc. I *do* mind when some people come down like a ton of bricks when someone posts, basically, "hey, I love my car. It really surprised me today"
