Sport mode

Featured Replies

Is it worth turning off?:

Is there any point, is there any facts that this mode burns more fuel? In real world use?

Personal preference: I actually like the low rumble sound i get in normal mode. But i can definately notice its slow to pick up.

Really want to hear your views, pro's and cons.

Go for it!!! :)

I have used Sport mode since having the car, i am using eco mode for the first time on this tank, so far i do not seem to be getting any further on the fuel than i have been for the last 1yr +

If there is any difference MPG wise it will be very minimal i think, the eco setting does not allow for a quicker pick up, thats the idea of the setting but i have not found any other advantage to using it so far.

Unless i suddenly find that it has in fact given me an extra 10mpg i will go back to standard and put it in sport as it should be IMO.

Where the TDIs are concerned I think they drive better in normal throttle mode. Throttle modulation in Sport provides strong initial response but when revved out feels as though its holding back on full throttle (by a few %).

Is the same on my 150 TDI Octavia and 184 TDI GTD.

Tend to see best MPG in normal too.

Eco is a waste of time...makes both cars horrible to drive and doesnt do anything to improve economy in my experience.

The three modes don't change the amount of power on tap, just the throttle response. Sport mode has a quick throttle response and eco has a slow one.

The only difference I can remember is that in sport mode, the headlights move with the steering wheel.

I hate eco mode as it is too slow to respond. Mine's normally in normal mode, but I can get the same mpg in normal or sport just by being careful with the throttle.

I agree about the engine sound generator, I quite like it but I don't miss it when it is silent!

If you use individual mode you can set everything in sport except throttle (and AC doesnt have a sports setting its either normal or eco....i tend to put that in eco) and thats frankly how I prefer it.

The lights corner anyway but I think the effect is exaggerated in sport (I.e they corner more and quicker). Not sure if the Octavia is the same but the bi-xenons on the Golf also provide low speed cornering lights, rather than the fogs doing it they have additional halogen bulbs built into the lamp cluster...quite a nice touch and work quite well at low speeds and when parking

I also like the sound generator, though it can get a bit wearing when you arent in the mood.

Looks as though on MY16 Mk7 Golfs with the soundaktor installed that you can now turn the sports interior noise on or off within the individual profile which is quite a nice touch. Yet to be seen in the flesh though....I am due to take delivery of an MY16 Golf GTD in the comming weeks so will soon know.

had exactly this conversation with the salesman yesterday spookily enough. just find it 'snatchy' in sport mode.

Yes its not brilliant on the TDI's might be better on TSI's.

I just think the torque hit in normal mode is more substantial and despite not being quite so sharp from the offset the car feels quicker in normal. Of course it does nothing to alter power output so is all about sensation and not improving performance per-se.

In other markets the vRS doesnt even come with Driver Mode Selection so by default is always in normal.....its therefore arguable normal throttle is what the car was developed around and probably the best all round mode for it. Its down to personal preference though I guess.....I occasionally turn it on as I like the soundaktor noise but not so much for altering the way it goes.

Is the sound actuator only in Sport? If you stuck it in Individual, with everything else in Sport (A/C excluded) but throttle Normal, would you still be able to select Sound Actuator? Not got mine yet hence the question.

Also know where you're coming from regards snatchy power delivery. Took a VRS manual out on one my test drives and had to be "brisk" when entering a busy roundabout or be stuck forever. I dropped the right foot, spun the wheels. Backed off a tad and it calmed down, but I was quite surprised how easily it spun. That was in Sport.

It depends as well if you have a manual or dsg.

I'm on a dsg and I tend to use all three. Sport via individual or normal on A roads and twistys. Eco on the motorway when I'm just bumbling along or on ACC. We've a lot of hills in North Wales so I find Eco increase the mpg by quite a bit when coasting downhill (with ACC off)

It's just a gimmick.

Controllable with a manual gearbox, waste of time with a diesel DSG.

lol. Our opinions differ then. Sounds like you're talking about sport mode via the gear stick which is different?

No difference on mpg on 1.6tdi in sport mode,   heavier steering and better throttle response.

MPG 1.6TDI

Do like the quieter roads this time of year - does wonders for the mpg.

Not on older cars but a possibility on MY16 vehicles. Seems to be the case on Golfs but has yet to be confirmed by anyone with an MY16 car in the UK.

It would be nice to be able to have the soundaktor noise with normal throttle though was a bit of an oversight on VAGs part for earlier vehicles.

Hoping I'll be picking my MY16 car up on Saturday so can have a play and report back. Still waiting on paperwork from Skoda Finance though (VWFS) so it's getting too close for comfort. But I'll hopefully have it soon.

I use Individual Mode and have it set on Sport engine and Normal steering. I don't like the heavy steering on Sport mode as i have pains in my upper arms.

Mine is my16: in individual mode you can change engine steering lights sound and air con.

I have been playing and my preference is:

Engine: Sport

Steering: Sport

Lights: Sport

Sound: Normal

Air con: Normal.

I am convinced of the slow pick up/lack of power in any setting except Sport. I just need to do more miles to see if there is a diff in mpg.

I like stop start in traffic. This is only in eco mode. I like the sound in sport mode.

Me too. And I always turn off stop start when I begin any run - I'm just old fashioned I guess!

I have sport mode on my DSG drove few kilometers and it burns more fuel noticeably. But tried it in town not on open road.

On my Leon FR I got the best mpg in sport mode. Too early to tell with the RS but early messing around seems to point in that direction too.

Plus the slightly sharper throttle feel is always nice even if its as false as the engine noise!

How can you get better mpg in sportmode?

In my car, sportmode makes it hold high revs, ready to sprint. It takes ages for it to change up.

I agree Eco mode isn't the most economical in my eyes. But I think it's more the case that we don't adjust our style of driving to that setting than Eco mode not being economical

My thoughts exactly. Sport mode just seems to thrash the crap out of it before changing gear. Good to knock it into sport for a quick sprint but otherwise manual mode with the paddles is far more user friendly when wanting to drive quickly.

You have more control with a manual car.

In (engine only) sport mode I feel like I'm driving a different car - but only if I feel like it!
