£9500 to spend... Superb or rapid?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I normally write in the rapid section of here but recently got hit by a lorry... Long story, no one was hurt (including my 3 week old son, 2 year old boy and even more beautiful wife). What did get hurt was our loved and cherished 2013 Skoda 1.2 Rapid Elegance in white with 28,000miles that had just been fully detailed and was looking better than it did when I'd bought it a year ago.

In fairness the rapid protected us very well but having been hit by a lorry I'm thinking about adding more room between us and other vehicles (I realise there is a flaw in my thinking and know that bigger is not necessarily safer but you can see what I might be thinking)!

I realise you might lean towards the superb in this section but what are people's thoughts...

A like for like replacement or slightly older superb (what should I get for £9500.

I'm looking to keep features like parking sensors, cruise control and good economy - I'd love an estate if that's possible....

Please let me know your thoughts and what I should look out for. Will the new shape coming out hit the price drastically?

Jon

Superb superb superb

Even older but much better. If you can find , from 2011, they are quite okey, but you would need 2.0 crtdi or 1.8tsi minimum.

Space, suspension and quality is much better then rapid!

There is a huge difference in the quality and spec of a Superb compared to the Rapid.

I love my toys far too much to consider a Rapid.

A Superb Elegance Estate is in your budget!

That ^^^

If you want an estate and the high spec Elegance you'll need to go for a higher mileage example (80,000 +).

The hatchback is still huge (I have one), the Rapid would fit in the boot  :D

Seriously though the Superb is in a different league.

Are you wanting diesel or petrol? There are lots more diesels to choose from.

I'm guessing you like white, this looks a lovely example, it's only a 1.6 though but a recent 2011 model with only 45,000 miles...

Go petrol though and you can have a Elegance (bi-xenon headlights, full electric / heated leather and sat nav), again 2011 but only 38,000 miles. Beautiful Rosso Brunello colour too...

Go for the Superb and you will be Rapid(ly) converted. [emoji1]

Hi Jon,

As you might expect, in this section you are going to get lots of support for the Superb. And I'm no different !!!

Go to your local dealer and have a drive in one, then see what you think. I would recommend the 170 CR Elegance. Quite simply the best car I've ever owned.

If you have a look around, and have a bit of patience you will find what you are looking for. Mine has the addition of front parking sensors and park assist, so there are lots of comfort and toys.

Good luck in your search.

From someone who's partner has a Rapid I'd definately go with the Superb. Hers has the glass roof, lots of toys, 17" alloys, race blue, etc but the Superb has a much better standard of finish, better ride quality and for a growing family, acres of room.

Just bought a superb 4x4 and im more than impressed

Oh and its a 2010 cost me 13,000 euros about £9,000

Fingers crossed and look out for a 'leggy' 3.6 estate  :D

I know, I know....hens teeth  :notme:

Anyway, Superb all the way. 2.0 TSi AWD DSG? You will not be disappointed.

Superb - no brainer...

Whilst I completely support the view of those who say "go for the Superb", it will cost you - higher mileage, older car and higher running cost. The Rapid is so under-rated that second hand they are something of a bargain  and if you liked it........

The Rapid's thinly disguised cousin the SEAT Toledo is, in my view, better equipped and if anything cheaper - although comparatively rare. SEAT's SE specification is more or less equivalent to the Rapid Elegance. There's a 1.2 TSI 105 SE  at Listers in Worcester Jan 2014 at £9450....not too far away from you.

I got my Superb 2014 1.4 S tsi (Facelift II) for just over 10k - MUCH MUCH better car than the Rapid. Cheap because its a petrol, however economy amazing for a petrol - Last fill 46.9 (measure between tank fills). Has cruise control and steering wheel controls(bluetooth great) but not parking sensors ( I negotiated them in on the deal). Sound systems sounds good as well

Earlier petrol engines (Superb II & Rapid) had cam chain issues but later ones have been revised although as with any cam chain engine you should never allow the engine to turn backwards - e.g. parking on a hill the wrong way

The Elegance is at my local Vauxhall dealer, it must be in good shape, otherwise they would got rid of it to a trader.

As a Superb owner I'm biased, but I have driven 3 different Rapids, nice enough, but not a patch on a Superb.

My insurance came back to me with 9k and my wife pointed out that we have roof bars, a rubber mat and that sh wouldn't drive the supurb as its so big!

I can almost understand that the car is too big for her... but not until she had driven ion e with Park Assist (so parking sensors all round to take the guess work out of parking).

As for having roof bars and a rubber mat WTF?? what will you do when the Rapid becomes a new shape? they are hardly expensive items that cannot be replaced.

The only way to be sure is to drive a Superb. As for the size, my partner refused to drive the three Audi A4 Avants that I had before the Superb after having a go in the first one as they were "too big and heavy"

i managed to persuade her to drive the Superb and she said "its not much different to driving my Polo" and so is now happy to drive it. The parking sensors each end help.

The only time I notice the size of the Suberb is when parallel parking but with rear parking sensors it isn't a problem as long as you can find a space long enough! The car is much narrower than others in the same class e.g. Mondeo, Mazda 6, Passat and indeed, and unfortunately, the latest Superb. The turning circle is also surprisingly tight and it is easy to find a comfortable and commanding driving position.

Totally agree with you, the Superb 2 isn't so good as a 5 seater, but uses the extra length, especially in it's wheelbase to provide really good legroom all-round.

Parking is easy, the doors aren't too big, & parking sensors are a boon until you are used to the car.

Width is not a problem unlike all the other cars in the same class, it's only 2009 mm across the mirrors, much less than the competition, & an easy fit through our garage doors.

S.W.M.B.O. likes the Superb but probably prefers her Octy 2 FL vRS to drive, mostly 'cos it's quicker, (257 bhp versus 249 bhp & lighter.....) but insists we take the Superb on any longish road trip 'cos it's quieter & more refined.....

I agree with her, we are off to Norfolk this week, only about about a 2 hour drive, so we will probably use a coin to choose which car to take!

We have both driven Rapids (courtesy cars) & wouldn't want to live with one on a daily basis, much too expensive (list price) for what you get.

but, I've recommended that one of my friends replace his Hyundai IX20 with a Rapid, he will gain boot space & won't feel that he's going to fall-over when cornering.

(He's not a car person at all, just needs transport to get to & from his narrow-boat.)

My July 2012 Greenline Elegance Twindoor  (5 gear manual) is coming on to the market but as in first class condition with a lot of extras and has only done 12,500 miles but suspect that once I've had time to properly assess it might be looking for a bit more.

The standard spec is good but includes cruise control, front and rear sensors and Park Assist (parallel parking only on this series).

I just had a Rapid for 10 days as a courtesy car - and what a hateful vehicle it was. DSG doesn't work with a car that light - really snatchy in traffic. I genuinely thought the front springs were broken they were that harsh.

Not nice and I was very pleased to get my superb back.

So the insurance stumped up £10,000 and I had a trip to Kent to collect a 2013 rapid 1.2 tsi elegance in black with a few extras on it. It needed a GOOD clean as their cleaner was on holiday and someone had tried to polish it and left white marks over everything. It the same age as what we had and with 10,000miles less so the wife is happy. She'd have considered the superb if we could have got 3 car seats in it or 2 and a adult in the between so the thought that 3 children might be a consideration meant I'm happy with a rapid as it will cost less in the long run - I don't think I could manage another child at this point!!! Anyway maybe in the future I'll join the superb coup cause the new shape looks very nice!

Thats like asking the finest stilton or poundshop chalk! No contest!
