Engine vibrating a lot on idle.

I have noticed lately that if I'm sat in traffic or I have the car running on idle the engine vibrates quite a lot for a few seconds at a a time shaking the whole car.

 

Its a Fabia VRS 1.9TDI is this normal?

Rythmic knocks could be an indication of dmf wearing out.

One other thing which I've read on the Internet, as I have experienced this too, is to check the torsion value using VCDS. I have read that after the cambelt has aged beyond 60% of its life it is advisable to check the torsion value as the timing can be affected by the belt ageing ( in a very slight way), but a slight advance or retarding of the timing could result in a rough idle so worth a check.

More experienced members than me may dismiss this as garbage so come to your own conclusion! Lol

One other thing is could be is cam lobe or follower wear which is also an issue in some older/higher mileage pd engines.

Or idle stabilisation failing, dodgy injector on 1 cylinder.

The clutch test will rule out the most obvious diagnosis luckily

WTF is; and how do you do "the clutch test"?

 

Judderiness is probably something not right with combustion, so cam timing adjustment, injector loom, maybe even the injectors themselves.

 

Failing or failed DMF should clonk/clatter and make horrible bricks in a mixer noise.... unless it's seized solid, in which case it should drive like a heavy SMF.... until it fails and blows the bellhousing.

A clutch test could be done on a rolling road. Maybe there are some other ways though.

Because of the stuttering problem I've been having I'm leaning towards a possible injector problem. Would that show on a vag test?

Mines developed this in the past fortnight.. was sat idling waiting for the Mrs to finish to work when I first noticed this.

Car sits there idling fine, then sporadically decides to vibrate more than usually.. the noise it makes is like. I dunno. It sounds like a train on tracks. That ta-dush-ta-dush-ta-dush noise.. (Sorry for the crap phonetics) It's not loud - I'm straining to hear it - but there's a definite noise associated with the vibrating.

Popped the bonnet open to have a nose, and the engine doesn't change in note/or vibration - just sits there idling normally..

I noticed today whilst sat in traffic works that there's a huge difference in noise from the engine when the clutch is engaged etc. When I'm sat there without the clutch engaged it's quiet apart from the sporadic noise/vibrating, when the clutch is engaged there's a lot more noise.

Is this likely to be the DMF?

I must add that when the cars driving - there's no problems whatsoever, it drives fine.. Third gear seems underpowered in my opinion - but that might just be me.

The only other thing I can think of adding - is that occasionally there's a smell of unburnt fuel.. and it feels rough on a cold start-up now it's colder.

Looks like you have the exact same issue as me After doing a lot of digging around I have found that this may be attributed to the EGR valve keeping open whilst the engine is idling. I already have a bit of a stutter under acceleration issue that is likely to be the EGR so I am definitely thinking of getting it deleted. I have found a tuning company locally that do the EGR delete etc for £75 so I might take the plunge and see.

Quick easy test for egr valve. Remove rubber vacuum hose from the valve and plug it with anything suitable. This will stop the egr from working. Take car for a drive and see if problem has gone.... You'll possibly throw up your warning light on dash but it will disappear once you connect everything back up straight again.

Rule out the easy stuff first.

Give the top of the valve a few gentle taps with a rubber mallet when you've disconnected the hose just to make double sure it's All closed

I get this same problum you are getting with my 56plate vrs.

It only does its engine vibration on tick over. But stops when I put the slightest little bit of revs.

Am believing it's the egr valve or even possibly the anti shudder valve because when it's doing the vibration bad the engine seems to make a werid rattly type banging sound on the n/s of the engine

I had my mechanic check it out whilst he was at mine fitting a new radiator and he told me it's the early signs of the flywheel being on it's way out. He's heard this loads of times and to start saving lol.

Lol.. yea it's defo the flywheel!! It's getting worse the more mileage I put on it.. so it may have to be parked till the new year!

Engaging the clutch stops the vibration and noise completely - so I figured it was the flywheel.. mine has the EGR delete so didn't think it was that.

Oh joy of joys.

I want to spend so much money I haven't got on improving performance - and then you find things you hadn't planned on that make your wallet ache!

It's a love hate relationship, and I suppose it's more of a love thing :-)

What upgrade clutch set ups are people using ie single mass fly wheel conversions I'll be looking at going for the 250 bhp in near future but I know my duelmass will not handle that so I need to ideas for replacement

After a few more miles - the vibration is continuing with clutch down as well.. so presume it's just different stages of wear.

Is this a case of getting the DMF and Clutch changed as soon as possible. I presume the DMF can break and cause some more serious problems?

Can my local specialist confirm whether it is the DMF as well? As it's an expensive job for it to be something else entirely.
