Fan type noise after turning off

Featured Replies

Had a search but nothing turned up using the words above.

I have a tsi and I've noticed that when I turn the ignition off, there's a whirring noise in the dash somewhere that runs. Like a fan or a pump. Haven't seen how long it runs for. Any ideas?

Does it happen all the time or only when the headlights are on / come on?

All the time.

Aint some kind of cooling pump for the turbo?

Not too sure then pal. I always thought I could hear the fuel pump or something but realised it was when the headlights came on.

It's not a fan on the bolero/amunsden/columbus unit is it?

Is your AirCon working Ok, the same thing happend on my Ex MKII Vrs and an Air Con sensor was faulty, A hissing noise from the vents in the cabin means it has no/loosing gas/preasure. I'd check the Air Con

Yep. Working fine.

It could be the head unit. It's about the right location.

It's the oil pump and the noise is normal. After the engine is turned off the car continues to pump oil around the engine for a few minutes to prevent it from cooking within the turbo. My TSI does it, and you can really hear it if you open the bonnet and listen immediately after switch off.

Nice one, fanks.

Yep mine has always done it. Also when you unlock the doors, open the bonnet, there's all sorts of clicks and whirrs. That's normal

Possibly the fan on your stereo but you say its only after you switch off.

My new Golf has a fan noise from the minute I unlock the car and it stays going all the time it is unlocked, it seems to be the stereo from a bit of a nose around.

It's definitely not engine related in any way on mine as even before the key is in the ignition I can hear a fan.

It doesn't pump oil, it pumps coolant.

Can it be the electronic throttle that sounds? It tends to adjust itself when turning on and off the ignition

I think you will find that it is the water pump which pumps coolant, and the oil pump is for oil. As far as I am aware the turbo is lubricated by oil. Water-based coolant cools the engine and turbo, which in turn is cooled by air. Keeping the oil flowing for a short period after ignition-off prevents engine/turbo hot-spots from degrading the oil.
