Anyone heard of Mannol Oil or used it

Featured Replies

Hi Folk,

I was in my local motor factor today and they're selling a German made oil "Mannol" that comes in various specs one of which meets VAG 505.01 and another VAG 507 both are £25 for a 5 litre container (4+1 free) the guy in the shop says it's good stuff and they're shifting loads of it with no complaints but I've never heard of it and wondered if anyone could through some light on it.

Regards

Peter

He is unlikely to say it is garbage and do not buy it,  after all they bought it in to sell it,

and unless you has been selling it for long it might be a while before someone comes back and say that oil caused issues.

That price will find you the same spec oil in Asda or many other Retailers.

Lets us know how you get on with it.

If you trust your Local Motor Factor what is the worst that can happen.

Hi Guys,

I've been unable to find out much about this Mannol so I'm unlikely to try it out.. one of the online tyre sellers also stock it (I've lost the name) as you say with Quantum being readily available for not more and even Opie Oils selling Gulf Formula GVX 5w-30 fully synthetic engine oil for VW / BMW / Mercedes at £25.96 plus a few pounds postage it's not worth risking it...

Hi VWPete,

I did manage to find some info on it and at the time it was either officially approved by the VAG group or its approval had just expired so for the price they were charging it was good stuff .... Sadly they only had it in stock for a few months and I've not seen it since

There's plenty on on Ebay

A 4 yr old thread gets picked up with a product recommendation posted as a first ever post on brisky...

No disrespect, but my accumulated yrs of internetting says... "unusual"...

I've been purchasing it from Ebay for 4 years with a vw air filter and a vw oil filter all for 25 squid delivered and really pleased with the quality just ebay that mannol oil theres lots on there!

There are currently two Mannol oils on the VW approved list, as far as I can see.

How are you measuring the cold and hot viscosity please?

By boiling water to 100 degrees and submerging a swan or u shaped glass tube so that the bend is underwater sealing 1 open end of the tube pour oil into the open end then time how long the water takes to heat the oil temp enough to raise the oil to the sealed end when it does remove the seal and see how long it takes to fall the longer it takes to rise and fall the higher the viscosity of the oil. That is the only way I know to test the heating and cooling viscosity at home, hope that helps.

Likewise; I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

As above here - had it for a few years and no issues.

I think Mannol is the German equivalent of Millers Oils , which is no bad thing. If the oil is to spec then I doubt you will have any problems.

I bought 20 litres of mannol 507 for 40 quid delivered off ebay for my 1.6 fabia. Thought that would give me 4 oil changes and do every 6 months. However a week after my dpf light is on and in limp mode, now i am wondering the coincidence. My soot is now at 9grams and still cannot get the warning lights off.

It could have been hooky oil in a Mannol container, that can happen with Oil bought on Ebay or anyplace in a Castrol , Mobile or any container,

fraudsters are about.

Almost certainly coincidence. Get fault code read and go from there rather than guessing.

Bought a big drum off the Bay for something like 40 quid. Specs checked out on website and worked across three cars in the fleet. Done a change for each one and all running fine (as far as anything oil related).

@Me-109 So that is as it should be if you get supplied with the real thing and to the spec you need, same as with everything, not just oil.

But if someone supplies snide oil then you might never know unless there is some issue that happens.

Hi There quite right the bay do some real good deals in it infact there is deal ending tonight. I've bought 2 lots basically decided to buy the long life equivalent 504 507 from memory. At the price it is although long life I'll just change every 12 months.

Used it last year in the misses focus and just changed again again always use a.good filter seems fine to me... Specs all seem to align.

Hope that helps..? Have to agree the dpf light must be coincidence.

  • 5 weeks later...

Just bought Mannol 75W80 g

GL4 gear oil to top-up gearbox.  Amazed to see how thin it was. Poured and mixed almost like water. Never seen a gear oil so thin. Very concerned. 5l bottle was sealed so not tampered with. Would be worried about the viscosity if it were a 5W30 engine oil. Saw a blog elsewhere about it used in a VW. Owner noticed excess noise and poor gear changing. Drained and replaced with VW oil and all fine. I’m going to do the same. Any comments would be helpful.

I've not changed gearbox oil in a while so hard to comment. A lot of synthetic oils seem watery these days or at least more so than anticipated considering its oil. Hate to say it but if its bothering you I'd change it as every notch and clunk will bring you back to doubt.

As mentioned I put some in my misses focus but it was engine oil and it seems fine.
