Build quality of Superb III

Back to the topic since there are quite a few new Superbs in England on the road: do you have any problems with built quality?

I was able to drive a few cars until now, and all had some problems with built quality. I must say, that I am quite disappointed regarding this.

Don't keep us in suspense then ! What are the build quality problems you had ? :-) I've had a squeak that's now vanished apart from the its Superb !

I will post just a few (not all were on the same car):
- extremelly loud front ventilator

- squeks from front camera area

- quality of piano black trim on the radio (not straight but woobly)

- radio not mounted fixed - if you pushed it just a little, it moved

- some electronic failures

- Columbus freeze

- Mirror View not working correctly with Android

- etc.

And this is the worst (though it is probably a feature and not a bug :)):
I will be interested in your comments on how DCC in Comfort mode is working over the bumps... :peek:  Because I haven't driven the car with adjustable suspension that would behave so badly over the bumps. As if the suspension is completely worn out. After the bumps it swings front/back two times.

I was able to drive also Passat with DCC and it performed perfect over the bumps in Comfort mode. No swinging front/back.

And bear in mind I do not own a Superb 3, so I did not drive them a lot, because if I would, I would probably find some more problems. :)

Sounds to me like you need to buy a Passat :-) Good luck !

:D :D :D

I have a Superb 2 and it is ok for now, but it definitely has more problems than my previous two Octavia 2. This is also why I have opened this thread, because I was not sure if it is only me (so I have a problem :p ), because everybody was just praising Superbs.

Passat is a no go for me, since I do not like estate versions and a Passat does not have five doors in saloon version. So, if I will be upgrading in the future, it will definitely not be a Passat.

It's not a build quality issue as such, but I have found that the carpet quality in the Superb III is really poor. It's a sort of non-woven fabric consisting of black fluff stuck to a backing layer. It's a nightmare to hoover and does not wear well at all (I've had it in much cheaper, smaller cars).

My previous Mondeos and the current Passat all have proper woven carpets which are much better.

This is just about the only aspect of the car where I would say that Scoda has gone too far in saving cost.

Jim they moved to this type of ‘carpet’ on the MKII, it actually wears quite well... but does look cheap and nasty.

Currently I have a resonating sound that comes from the N/S/F area of the cockpit (glovebox area) at certain speeds, it’s not there 90% of the time.

And this is not the only aspect of saving production costs.

The paint on the car is extremely thin (cca. 80-100 microns, good luck with polishing the car :dull: ) and the body panels are also very thin.

My colleague had already twice a bump (depression) on the back pillar, when he was washing the rear window and put his arm on the back pillar to reach for the middle of the rear window. So be carefull when leaning on the car :D .

But I would expect that this will be the same with all new cars. Not just due to cost cutting but also weight saving, which of course translates also to better fuel consumption. This is also why I didn't put these things in the list already in my previous answer.

Yeah I thought this. I'm pretty sure its been the same stuff on my last 4 Skodas from 2002 and the first one was a basic Fabia !!! I was also hoping for a better quality carpet but its not the end of the world. I currently have my winter rubber matts in and they are a great fit much better than the old Scout so that helps.

Giz try what I did on the drivers side.... Small circular Velcro sticker on back of a small rubber grommet. Stick it where the plastic door mates up flush to the side of the glove box. Worked on my drivers side squeak. Ive taken the grommet off now and it's still OK....

Cheers Nick that was my intention... once I have located exactly where it is coming from (need SWMBO to drive the car whilst I check)

The only one of these issues I have experienced is how loud the front vent is... but c'mon that's pretty minor. I've not had any issues in 500 miles, solid car for the price.

The vent noise on my car was not minor, it was very loud. It was not present on other cars, so it was definitely not normal.

PS: making any conclusions about good quality after 500miles is at least premature...

Are you a Troll ?

There seems to be one or two pretentious 'people' on here. Happy new year all! If you don't like Skoda go buy a BMW or other other priced vehicle!

Happy New Year to all.

With regards to build quality, both of my brother in-laws have had Ford Mondoe Titaniums, both had steering rack failures just out of their warranty period, they battled like hell to get Ford to help, both only got 50% of the cost of replacement, even thought both cars had covered less than 30K.

This issue was a known fault and widely discussed on various forums, this was brought to Fords attention but they would not acknowledge that this was an ongoing issue, this was the most serious issue, but both had quite a few other smaller issues.

My last company car was a Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer, nice solid car, but very basic, I had to pay extra for Blue Tooth, but no better build than my current company Octavia or my own new Superb, both of which have a huge range of extras on even the base models.

Just my thoughts, not much to choose between manufacturers these days, I looked at the Merc C Class, and the Jaguar XF,with all the extras on them, that I have on my Superb, the Cost £ 36K, both much smaller cars, my Superb was nearly £10K cheaper, you pay your money and take your chances, my Company Octavia gave me the confidence to make my personal purchase of the New Superb, I am not disappointed to date.

You are missing the point. In one of my earliest posts I have written this: With this in mind it is still a great car, packed with the latest technology.

So I do not think that Superb 3 is a bad car, but I am definitely at least disappointed with the built quality, so I started this thread to see if only I notice (maybe imagine) these things. If this makes me a troll, than I am. I hope that writting realistically on the car, not just praising it, is not illegal or against forum rules. But I see, that I am not imagining this also by the posts here and from the first post I had a chance to speek in person to quite a few Superb 3 owners and many had some issues, majority fixed by Skoda dealers under warranty.

Anyway, throwing BMW into equasion is not an option, since Skoda and BMW are completely different cars aimed at different customers.

IMHO, build quality seems every bit as good as VW and Audi, although the plastics may be a little bit more luxurious in the Audi.... A few of my colleagues have the new Passat and I don't see a difference. Just my opinion after 1500 miles, and I am one fussy fecker when it comes to squeaks and rattles

Quite. On mine it is merely minor, relatively speaking. Yes, I grant you that it is premature to make comments on quality after 500 miles, but a few of the aspects of 'quality' you outline are discernible from the first mile.

I only have this car for two years, and in truth it is my wife's. For what I pay to drive it - basically pocket money - I think the quality is acceptable. It is far from being prestige or luxury, but it is better than Ford/Vauxhall (that i've driven or been driven in) and the usual French suspects.

Actually,

I am currently deciding between the VFM of the new Superb, the luxury and styling of the XF sportbrake and the quality of the 520D Touring. The other issue I have is sadly one of image. I'm a subcontractor and might be in the spotlight if I arrive in a better car than the boss. Skoda wins hands down, especially in white with chapter 8 livery!

Ok - so yesterday I went to open the pocket by the drivers right knee in my SEL Exec Estate, the handle snapped off in my hand.  No undue to pressure and just normal operation.  I have been in touch with SKODA who want to see it so that they can establish if it is a warranty issue.  Quite simply a 28K car shouldn't be falling to bits after 2k miles.  I'm not sure how I could have done anything untoward.  You pull the handle and the storage pocket opens, only in this case the handle fell off!

3500 mile have past, not a single squeak/rattle nothing has fallen off or broke, and im more than happy with the quality, especially the beige leather, much better than the 5 series i had, looked and felt fake.the one gripe i do have is with the piano black dash and door trim, like the plastic you see on t.v casings, cheap looking and shows every finger print and speck of dust, would much rather it would have been brushed stainless steel or something.think the biggest drawback with the superb if it is to compete with the 'so called major players' is the bland exterior colour pallett, and,in the case of my L&K either brown or beige leather, and piano black trim and ' thats youre lot'.look on bmw's or jaguar configarators and see the choices of interior/exterior colours and trims available, sad really that skoda doesnt offer more personalization, especially for the likes of me whos car cost 36k.i took the plunge, happy with my choice,oh yes, happy with skodas trim/colour choices,No. Kevin.

Happy New Year.

Only one issue on build quality and that it the catch on the beige coin tray RHS of steering wheel which has broke on second opening i.e. put coins in there and then it broke when I opened it.  Not spoke to Skoda yet.

Snap....quite literally eh. I have just posted on number 48 about the same issue. Mine is beige. I spent some time with it banging my knee afterwards as I could not get it out but managed to do it once I got home. I examined it and it looks like the hole (in case holding the catch) has not been drilled big enough given the coating of beige and thus it was difficult to turn putting undue pressure on it upon opening. Also it looks like it has been over stressed clipping it into the coin tray.

Cheers ReedFarmer.  I'm about to e-mail my dealer with pictures and demand it is fixed on warranty.  I'll let you know how I get on.  There is obviously an issue here.
