VW difficulties

Featured Replies

Having just taken delivery of a 65 plate Octavia SEL Estate 4x4 and part exchanged a two year old SE Estate 4x4 all on the 2nd Sept, this vehicle I believe would have had an EA 189 engine tghe one that seems to be causing all the problems.

The new vehicle has a new engine and the 3 figure number it says, is stamped on the block.  It is not in the manual.  Anybody know where that would be. I am led to believe the new engine is probably EA288, but where would that be indicated.

Thanks

V5 document, look for engine code CUDA

No the V5 may give an engine number for the that particular engine but it is not the engine type.  The one in the previous car was EA189 this one will be EA  something

CUDA is EA 288

Am assuming your previous Octavia was a Mk3 as am sure they didnt make an SE 4x4 Mk2.

The Mk3 diesels havw always been EA288.....just the initial ones were EU5, they are now all EU6. The 184 has been EU6 for ages..if not perhaps from its launch in the vRS.

At the moment the focus is on the EA189 which I believe is the previous gen 2.0 CR lump (so primarily 140 and 170ps) and the source of the initial outcry. What we are essentially waiting for is confirmation as to whether VAG used this defeat device software on EU versions of this motor and even the EA288 which is as yet unconfirmed I believe.

Even if it is on European cars our limits are much higher than the US so it really shouldn't bother us unless of course you brought your car because you thought it blew Daisy's out of the exhaust pipe and weren't really bothered about power, performance , looks and ability!

I am with Jeremy Clarkson on this. I don't give a rats what comes out of the back as long as it is well built, comfortable, and reliable

Yes the fact of the matter is that 31mg/km NOx output for a 2.0 diesel running reasonable power at this time is nigh on impossible.

I suspect thats why VAG (rather underhandly admittedly) went about using the defeat software to cook the test results for the EPA testing. In hindsight they'd have probably been better off not introducing "Clean Diesels" to the US market but they are where they are.

I've just got my V5 for a new VRS TDI DSG and the engine code on that is CUNA. Is there any difference between that and CUDA?

Just found this document:  http://vag-codes.info/files/engines/vw-engines.pdf

Perhaps this will help.

CUDA not in either?

No I spotted that, and the Skoda list seems to say CUNA fitted since 11/12 which seems a while ago for an EA288. But it's a new car so would assume it's the new engine.

Got info regarding the car i'm waitng for - MY 2016 Scout 184 TDI DSG6  - and motor code is CUNA.

This is all very confusing - mine's a CUPA (on a MY15 vRS TDI).  I think that's a EA288 too.

So far everything written and spoken is about VW & Audi Models that are Diesel 1.2 , 1.6 & 2.0 that are Euro 5.

Not Euro 6.

So if Skoda & Seat are to be included and actions taken it can only be assumed they will also be Euro 5,

not any Euro 6 Compliant Engines / Vehicles.

So not too long until some announcements will come on Volkswagen Group cars in the UK

and which if any, and if they are only Euro 5 Emission Diesels.

Skoda is already included. It was in the News today. But no info on wich cars are affected.

Seat is also involved it is in articles about the Trade Minister in Spain wanting Subsidies back that Seat got for producing efficient vehicles.

But VW are drip feeding the information in a not very informative way.

& very very little on the British Isles and what the jackanory is.

The latest info in Norway was about wich Audis are affected. No such list from Skoda yet.

Seat has no dealers here, so no info about that.

Could this affect resale values?

Could this affect resale values?

Hope so, so when the lease runs out on my VRS I can then expect a great deal from VW finance, my plan is to opt out of company car scheme and run my own. By that time I will be on about 55-60k mileage with a fully serviced and maintained vehicle and paid off

Does this help

It is interesting that my recent 4x4 Octavia SE on a 63 plate had NOx emissions of 0.129 and the new ne an SEL 4x4 estate on a 65 plate has emissions down to 0.073 just below the allowed 0.08.  I wonder what they did to reduce the emission level by that much. On the same subject I see that Emission Analytics who test vehicles in real world driving found that even the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta running the 1.0 litre eco boost petrol engine were both 4x times over the limit of the 0.06 allowed for petrol cars.  And to cap it all, the Daily Mail to-day appeared to have discovered that the Mpg figures given by manufactures are not what happens in the real world. Who would of thought that!!!

My V5 document for n Octavia VRS TDI DSG estate which was built in the last week of august has an engine code CUNA and in section D2 it has type 5E. So it would seem that despite being built recently, registered only 4 days ago and not picked up yet that it is Euro5 not 6. Would that seen correct and would that make it an EA189 (and likely to be recalled) or EA288?
