SmartGate wifi direct

Featured Replies

Has anyone managed to get their android phone to connect to smartgate via wifi direct?

I'm running an HTC One M8 on Android 5.0.1

I know there was mention of an issue with later versions of Android OS but I've tried this version and an older phone with 4.4 and can't even see the connection. (My TV pops up in the list of available devices so the phone seems fine)

I can see the wifi SSID for direct connection but that stops me making the most of smartlink.

Smartlink is version.

Correct me if im wrong but doesnt the smartlink use a bluetooth connection and smartgate a wifi connection ? If thats the case then i dont understand your last sentence because from my understanding if you connect directly to smartgate using wifi you can still use all the smartlink options because it uses your bluetooth. I dont have a smartlink but i do have a smartgate and i just connect to it like to a wifi modem and at the same time i can still play music using spotify through bluetooth connection

Smartlink uses the USB cable (maybe bluetooth too) to connect from your phone to the car. Your phone needs a data connection while using Android Auto to give you navigation, streaming music etc.

Connecting via standard wifi, where your car acts as an access point, makes Android phones turn off their mobile data connection and instead try to use the wifi for internet access. WiFi direct mitigates this by allowing your phone to hold a wifi connection with the car while still providing data through a 3G/4G mobile connection.

Clear as mud I know :|

hmm im pretty sure my phone still can stream but im on iphone so maybe its different or maybe i imagine things but anyway did you try switching "smart network switch" on your android ?

The smartgate module sounds rather like the telematics module VW are now fitting to Nav equipped cars to facilitate carnet services.

I have to put my phone in WiFi hotspot mode and then WiFi the car to the phone. The nav then uses the phones internet connection to get access to the live services.

As well as being able to connect to a WiFi hotspot the car can be put into hotspot mode itself.....the problem being is that it cant use WiFi or be in hotspot mode simultaneously (much like the phone).....so whilst the car can be made to advertise its own WIFI network its all rather pointless as the car doesnt have internet access unless its connected to a hotspot itself. Havent worked out why the functionality is there yet....seems entirely pointless.

Also to be fair why would the car need a hotspot really when the phone providing access to live services is in hotspot mode and others could use that data connection if they so desired :-)

Yeah iphones and earlier versions of android work differently unfortunately.

I think it might be iphones only but there is a way that your car can act as the wifi hotspot and share your phone's data connection with other devices. I've read a better explanation than I can give elsewhere on the forum.

What live services?

I have a M8 as well and it works fine.

You need to download the SmartGate app from the Play Store and change the connection type to WiFi Direct within the app then it will find your Smartgate when you press connect.

If you have saved the standard WiFi connection you need to remove that first as you can't be connected from the same device by moth methods.

Looks like you need to update your Smartgate as well as it doesn't have any settings for WiFi Direct. Ill grab a screenshot of mine at some point.

Thanks yeah I don't see a wifi-direct connection from my car. Might have to flash an old version of Android to my old HTC Desire HD

Connect using the Service app and see if it eventually offers you a firmware upgrade

Oddly my Smartgate is firmware 0928, so yours is a later version than mine. Do you have any settings on the MIB2 unit for Smartgate?

There's no mention of it on the MIB2 unit that I can see.

I've connected over standard wifi and been offered a firmware upgrade to 0928 within the service app which then fails (as expected) due to being a previous version.

0928 and 1009 almost looks like they're using release dates as version numbers but that would mean mine was updated at the dealers as I only collected the car on Tuesday.

What live services?

My Golf has carnet so when it has a data connection can provide weather, live traffic (instead of TMC based traffic reports), news feed, fuel prices and parking info with available spaces with car parks that participate with the service through the infotainment. Its also possible to push POIs and routes to the car from an online portal and tell the car to provide a health report to the portal.

Its pretty good. Its something VW added to MIB2 nav equipped vehicles for MY16.

Thanks for info.

Thanks for info.

No trouble...its called CarNet Guide and Inform if you fancy looking it up.....valid for three years from 1st registration...then you have to subscribe I think.

Hi Xdq,

can you provide the *.ota file, that was used to perform the update?

The Smartgate in my Rapid does not support WiFi direct, so i'm unable to get the connection to Smartgate and 3G at the same time, since Android smantphones do not support two network connections at one time. So i'm unable to perform the update using the Service App.

I don't think I've got an update file as the one it was telling me to upgrade to was older than what is currently installed in my car.

What software version do you have?

(You can find this by connecting your phone to your car's smartgate, standard wifi is fine, and navigating to 192.168.123.1 in your phone's browser.)

Hi again:

Hardware Version:0008

Software Version: 1009 (0553,0253)

The Partnumber is the same as yours (I think it's the same Box in all VAG vehicles).

I can't find the ota file anywhere on the internet. Even the Skoda customer hotline couldn't tell me where to get it. The only advise i got was to get in touch with my dealer.

1009 is the same version as mine and the latest that I've seen mentioned on the forums here.

I might pop into my dealer next week and ask them if they know about any updates.

Good luck with that :)

Hi,

I do have Smartgate with.

Hardwareversion 004

Firmware 0884

The promblem is, that I can not connect my Galaxy S6 via WiFi Direct. So I am connecting it via regular WiFi.

Skoda Service is able to connect to the car via WiFi an is offering a download. But, it just pretends to download something.

It takes forever and it allways ends with an error message.

Does anybody , by chance, have an newer version of the firmware as file available?

Thanks

If you go to updateportal.skodaauto.com and enter your VIN do you get offered a download for SmartGate?
