If you get an update from http://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/ am I right in thinking you can then  apply it via USB drive / SD card?

Slightly less convenient but still better than having to arrange a dealer visit if you're the sort (like me) who likes their software as up-to-date as possible  :nerd:

So, i went to the dealer today. He also couldn't help me out with a solution for the WiFi Direct problem. After all, i don't think he knows anything about smartgate and how it works... It was a really disapointing morning for me.

I was able to connect to SmartGate via WiFi, with still an established 3G connection. My old Nexus 4 still stays connected to 3G, when the WiFi network it's connected to, has a very slow, or no internet connection.

So i was able to let the Service App search for an update.

I received a software "update" for the smartgate, version 0928. The installation failes. I think the version is older. So after all i'm still standing here with no wifi direct support, and very unsatisfied...

I eventually updated to 0928 on my android phone. Not really sure how. I now have a WiFi direct connection when I connect with my car. Still no real reason to have Smartgate though....

If you go to updateportal.skodaauto.com and enter your VIN do you get offered a download for SmartGate?

Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

I tried this and only get offered a download for my Bolero, but no mention of a Smartgate unit software download option.

I also open the Service App and it also didn't provide any updates ( it did mention a few TPM faults ?????)

Would that be as a result of not being factory fitted?

Smartgate unit version 0884

Smartgate App version 1.1.25

Smartgate app is showing

WiFi Client & WiFi Direct Client.

What is the newest version of Smartgate unit software, and how can I get it?

If I am connected to the Smartgate via WIFI, should I also be able to connect to the Internet via Mobile data?

928 is the newest. Only ever appears in the service app to upgrade... But it took a few attempts to do it.

yes but as there is no access to internet can not download the firmware 0928

You can, you need to turn your WiFi off as it starts to download. I managed to upgrade mine that way to get WiFi direct

What version are you on after updating? I'm still on 1015 with no wifi direct.

0928 or whatever it is.

Those of you with 1xxx won't get an update with the service app

I "downgraded" back to 928 through the service app and WiFi direct seems to work now. Smartgate doesn't. But St least it's connecting!

Sorry but my Sony Xperia Z3 the service app crash with wifi off.

After upgrading to 928 WiFi-Direct is working with "SKODA Smartgate" now. However, it seems that "Skoda Drive" does not like WiFi-Direct.

Sorry for beeing slightly "off topic".

Does anybody get any reasonable consumption data via smartgate?

My indications are zero whenever the car is in motion and infinite as soos as it stops.

This is true for "MFA Pro" as well as for "SKODA Drive".

Weird, managed to do it on a HTC.

Skoda Drive doesn't work with WiFi Direct for some inexplicable reason.

I will check on mine, Skoda Drive works fine but I thought it just showed a percentage efficiency?

I get told there is an update but it always fails to "downgrade." Telling it not to notify me doesn't work, it pops up after another couple of launches.

Which parts of smartgate don't work? I'm curious as I'd like to get my driving stats/fillups logged automagically (not bothered about motorsound, g-meter etc.)

Thanks for this first answer.

In the listing of all driven routes it shows an average consumption. This is necessary to calculate the savings as far as I understood it.

Each time after shutting down the engine I do also get the info that the fuel state has changed and I am supposed to fill in Information abaut a refueling.

I suppose this is the only method to insert refuelings and log them in SKODA Drive.

Have you logged in to www.skodadrive.com and logged in to the app as well? You can define price per litre, target mpg etc. Just checked and mine shows consumption figures. I find the entering each fill up very hit and miss, it doesn't prompt me most times, and if it does I am driving and then it never prompts me again.

Just connection ish issues that I haven't had time to really work out how it works.

Also everything is in km instead of miles!

Cool, It'll be nice when it 'just works' and can be left to chug away in the background.

The car is going for a trip to garage next week so I just want to confirm expected behaviour.

1. When on WIFI direct will your phone still use its data?

2. How does the phone notification panel show this... as mine only shows WIFI or Data symbols, never both together.

3. When on WIFI direct, have you had any experience with phone WIFI staying on after phone put in flight mode? When phone put in flight mode going to bed, it's as if the Smartgate App was running in background, looked for a WIFI direct connection, then dropped the connection in favour of house WIFI. The issue only started occurring after enabling WIFI direct (I currently have it switched off to stop Whatsapp and email notifications coming in whilst asleep.). It may be a Smartgate App issue.

1. With WiFi Direct I do have GSM/UMTS connection additionally for internet access and so on.

2. I do get two symbols in the status bar, one for WiFi Direct and one for mobile data access 8Samsung galaxy S6 with Android 5.1.1)

3. Whenever Smartgate WiFi stops working, your phone will look for an other access point. In your case it will find your home access point an hook up to this.

Smartgate is switched off by shutting down your engine, (switching off ignition). But this will not kill your App, so it is running in the background waiting to reconnect to Smartgate.

In my case, if I come to one of my home/work access points, my phone will hook up to this right after I killed the engine and work as expected.

To reconnect to Smartgate I have to leave the reception area of this point before it will reconnect to Smartgate.

No matter what kind of WiFi connection to Smartgate is to be used.

Now some more of my experience with Smartgate and my car.

All Smartgate Apps, MFA Pro as well as Skoda Drive give me a consumption of zero liters per distance or respectively unlimited mileage.

Meawhile I do have a faint suspicion.

I do have a G-Tec model. So normaly I am driving with CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) so my fuel (gasoline) consumption is realy zero.

Due to the fact that the BC is indicating my gas consumption I assumed that the Smatrgate Apps would be able to indicate this as well.

But obviously the old saying about assume is true once again. (Makes an ass out of U am me).

Thats the only reasonable explanation to me right now.

I will try to get back to the Skoda Support and hope to get an answer this time.

So aditional to this I will ask them to enable the WiFi-Direct connection for Skoda Drive as well as beeing able to use all Apps in landscape and portrait mode.

Meanwhile I will try to check it whenever my gas tank is empty and I have to drive on fuel.

I will come back with the answers here as soon as possible.

Most Android phones will not support an infrastructure WiFi and a WiFi Direct connection at the same time, but some do.

For managing the WiFi Direct connection you have more control doing it directly through the Smartgate app than doing it within Android, you have a disconnect from Smartgate option available.

I figured that with Smartgate App constantly running in the background that using the WIFI Direct Client would use the house WIFI when at home and use the Smartgate "WIFI" when car switched on. When car switched off it would auto disconnect from the car and jump back onto a saved WIFI spot.

When in the car (car switched on) I figured that when using Smartgate "WIFI" in the car that I could still use my phones mobile data connection (to use Maps, receive Whatsapp, receive email etc).

What I didn't expect was the phone's WIFI to switch on to the house WIFI during the night when in flight mode. (AFAIK this is a result of the WIFI Direct Client option).
