okay so my 1.4 16v 2001 fabia is driving my crazy it started with a bad idle and then when to a bad idle and unresponsive throttle so I've changed the throttle body for a new one after trying a second hand one also taken of the intel manifold erg and pipe for erg and clean everything a resealed the intake tested the map sensor and o2 sooner both apparently working also change the servo vacuum pipe as that was split and changed the battery but still the same problem so the current symptoms are start the engine and the it revs then it drops to about 1 thousand touch the throttle and come off it  and it starts to bounce between 1 and 1.5 thousand  then if you put your foot to the floor it will go to about 2 thousand but no more can anyone help me out with this don't now what else to try any help would be greatly appreciated 

 

Has the throttle body been re-adapted using VCDS?

 

Have you checked that the EGR valve is working properly and not stuck open?

yes the throttle body body has been readapted and the erg was change a couple of months bach but i did clean it and the valve is fine

update on the troubles found out today that if you put it in gear and pull away in first just of the clutch it will move but have to keep the clutch slightly down if you come complete off the clutch it judders a lot like it wants to stall

can you recommend anyway to test for this?

You will need a 2nd person to help you: one to rev the car and another one to place a hand (but not to obturate) at the end of the exaust pipe. Rev the engine as hard as possible and you should feel a pretty strong air flow (if everything is alright).

on a generic reader it logs p0170 powertrain  fule trim bank 1 on vcds it just come up with a leak in air intake 

You will need a 2nd person to help you: one to rev the car and another one to place a hand at the end of the exaust pipe. Rev the engine as hard as possible and you should feel a pretty strong air flow (if everything is alright).

  

any other ways as the engine cant be reved 

At idle it should be enough air flow as well...I cannot obturate with my hand my exhaust pipe for more than a few seconds. After this, it's building up pretty high pressure and it's simply throwing it out.

If the catalyst test is ok, check the air, fuel filter and the fuel strainer inside the petrol tank. An air intake leak would drop the revs when you lift the foot off the accelerator, but it shouldn't affect building up revs and such a terrible loss of power. 

 

Anyhow, I'm still thinking about a clogged catalyst. I'm not sure how is the exhaust manifold at your engine, but if it is easy to reach, try to loose it a bit to allow air coming out and see if anything improves. The bolts might be pretty hard to unscrew though, rusty and close to welded.

Are you driving more often around the city at low revs ?

tried what you said and no lack in presser and if i losen of the exhaust it make it stall and found out today that if i pull away off the clutch and then just tape the throttle it makes it judder with the reves 

You catalyst should have a few screws for unmounting. Can you try loosen those a bit and see if the engine gets back to life ?
