Lane assist

Featured Replies

I know what Lane assist means but, what does Adaptive Lane guidance mean. Had the car 18 months and kept meaning to enquire.

I would try it and see - the difference is quite noticeable.

With Adaptive LA, the car tries to keep you in the best place in your lane, and to some extent bases this judgment on your own driving style.  I think this would mean that, for example, if you prefer to drive a little left of centre in your lane, then it will learn this and gently steer you into this position all the time.   You may like this or - as I do - find its constant interference slightly annoying.

If you Adaptive LA off, it only intervenes if you are about to veer right out of your lane - the rest of the time it doesn't get involved.  As such I consider it a worthwhile safety feature to cover the hopefully rare situation where for some reason you've lost concentration and started to drift out of your lane - possibly into traffic in a neighbouring lane, or even into oncoming traffic on a single-carriageway road.

One of the two is where the car helps to guide you within the lane by actively steering. I think the other is simply a warning when you drift over the line without indicating. I have the steering assist activated so haven't seen a lane warning yet.

I was a bit late in replying, Alancha's response is far clearer than mine :)

Does anyone actually use Lane Assist?

I use it on the motorway sometimes, quite a useful little feature IMO. Get on my nerves on normal roads though, for example when trying to overtake parked cars it recognizes you're going over the centre line and tries to shunt you back in. Into the parked cars. Not a massive issue because the steering adjustment isn't strong enough to overcome your steering, but can easily catch you off guard if you forget it's switched on.

I used it during the first month of ownership mainly showing people the car can steer itself, albeit for only 5-10 seconds without hand contact on the wheel.

Since then its been off for a few of reasons.

1. When doing an overtake on a motorway I tap the indicator stalk which flashes it 4 or 5 times. This disables the lane assist but it will reengage again straight away so if you haven't made the overtake it tries pulling you back into the original lane.

2. When coming up to roadworks travelling at 50 mph on an A road I tried moving the car to the right to move around them and it tried throwing me back because it mean't I was crossing the line in the middle of the road. This has also happened on roads with parked cars at the side and you try to go around them and it wants you to go through them rather than cross the line. There were no cars around me so I didn't bother indicating to go around them although this would have stopped this happening. Just a pain to remember and does give you a scare.

3. The standard lane assist is OK on a motorway but the adaptive one gets on my nerves. I feel it constantly pulling the car where it thinks it needs to go even though I am pretty much central.

At the end of the day I prefer having complete control.

Ta all, I was bored waiting for the wife so started going through all the setting, both lane settings are normally on. It makes for a more relaxed driving once on the dual carriageways.

If you untick the bottom box ( in Car settings ) the Lane assist isn't as aggressive. Thats how I have mine set.

I'll try it

This is how i have it, if its on and find it good - with the box ticked its too intrusive.

I don't use it for commute to the office but if i'm going up country / up the motorway (over an hour or so one way) i used it.

interesting i didn't realise there was different settings for it, i thought it was either on or off.

never really seen the point in it tbh don't really like the sensation of the car trying to correct you, the only thing i have really found it useful for is showing people the car can steer for itself its a good talking point!

I find it's a good setting if theres a cross wind, the car seems a bit more stable.

The salesman activated it on mine and by the time I had got home (33 miles) I was determined to deactivate it.  I find the 'corrections', no matter how gentle, quite annoying.  Perhaps that is the idea - if it is annoying you then you are less likely to nod off!

I found another problem with Lane Assist which led to me ensuring it was off any time I am not on the motorway/dual carriageway. If you veer out to pass a cyclist, it has a nasty habit of pulling you directly back towards them, which is unnerving for me but I imagine would be more so for the cyclist if I didn't wrestle back control!

Also, it is a nightmare in roadworks which use temporary road markings; there are always lines passing across the lane, which leads to the Lane Assist having a fit.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more likely I am to switch it off for good...

I also have it deactivated. I don't like the stearing feel when it's on. I also have two fully functioning eyes located conveniently on the front of my head.

I, too, have mine permanently deactivated. The constant "nudges" on the steering wheel are so aggravating and I got fed up with fighting them. I get enough nannying from the state without the car joining in. Adaptive cruise control, however, is a different matter altogether - superb!

I always use it on dual carriageways and motorways.  Off on twisty A/B roads

I have to admit I only have 2 selections for mine. One to turn lane assist on and the other to turn on adaptive assist

If I do not have adaptive set to on it definitely does not do any corrections, just wondering if everyone else is certain it does on theirs

Out last night on dark B road with Adaptive off. Putting it back on today,16 months of using it, I prefer it on.

I have scout model year 2016 and I have none of these "features" mentioned. mine is avoiding parked car and steers to top on centerline to avoid collision. (does not cross centerline)

I also like adaptive one because it is cutting on curves like i do. Also like that when i show for the car that i want to be 10cm from sideline, and not in center on road, car will stay there (exept on curves, when it cuts corners like i do as well)

At least i am very happy on that and will keep it on. Only thing what i am not happy is that it will go off after 10s

mine is avoiding parked car and steers to top on centerline to avoid collision. (does not cross centerline)

Your lane assist steers the car to avoid collisions? Must be a new feature.

There is annother nice feature on highway. (i am talking about Left Hand Drive car)

if car before you is turning on right and you have both on, ACC and LA, car gently brakes, and then steers to right even ower sideline if there is a hole where car fits. it does not stop and wait car before you going away. If there is no room to go around, then ofcourse it stops.

if car before you is turning on right, car will not cross centerline, but again if there is room to go around, it will do that

Edit: car front need to have blinker on, othervice car just brakes

But differences between experiences could also be due to that original programmers are german and they have LHD. Really do not know is RHD same?

as said later, can be also difference between LHD and RHD

Where does it describe this function in the handbook? I have not seen it in any handbook LHD or RHD, English Or German.
