VW Emissions Scandal Thread V2

It seems VW expect to have to buy back 115,000 vehicles from U.S. owners <SNIP>.

A certain amount of "speculation" there which seems to be based on unnamed sources talking to the German daily newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung in January (REUTERS).

One wonders where exactly VW would "dump" these bought back tractors in an environmentally friendly way? ;)

The ten year design life of emissions systems predictably originated in the U.S.10 years ago.

Makes me wonder about failures inside that period and what the U.S. consumer would expect (if he even knew)

The Volkswagen Group is very very wealthy it appears,

but now they have to recall more cars in the US than they had to with the Defeat Device.

This is the 'Air Bag' Recall.

So that will be Recalling cars that they probably have to 'Buy Back' anyway, there must be some crossover.

No matter how big and wealthy you are with other peoples money, the financial hit must be huge already and growing.

They need to get on with all these new sooper dooper new Green Electric cars they are trying to get Motoring Mag space with,

while deflecting from the Elephant in the room, sales dropping, and a lack of technology ready to go.

Air pollution is contributing to about 40,000 early deaths a year in the UK, say the Royal Colleges of Physicians and of Paediatrics and Child Health. They say emissions from diesel engines have been poorly controlled and indoor air pollution has been overlooked. (LINK)

I wonder how long it will take our Government to ban the import and sale of new Diesel engined cars? As a start point they could increase the tax on diesel fuel and put the resulting income into the NHS budget. The curse of unintended consequences, and lobbying by oil companies and the SMMT

Mercedes-Benz has [announced] a new diesel engine family it says sets a new standard in efficiency and emissions.

I wonder how long ago Mercedes started work on this engine? All that investment and finally people are acknowledging that CO2 isn't the only problem.

Multiway EGR returns a small quantity of exhaust gasses to the combustion chamber to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOX) and other pollutants before catalytic treatment.

After the gasses emerge from the turbocharger turbine they first enter an oxidation cat, then go into a downdraught AdBlue mixer which doses the gas with urea, for further NOX reduction in a second Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR).

Before entering the exhaust silencers, the gas passes through a final particulate filter to remove solid particles

And that will add how much to the cost of a diesel engine?

How much does it cost Daimler Mercedes to have the Factories, Employees, models and class of vehicles and then not the right engine to have in them as the Diesel Emission standards are enforced and the next Euro Emissions are introduced meaning they can not sell Diesel vehicles.

The German Manufacturers got the EU Governments to push back Emission Standards for a long time, and then VW were caught out,

and the 'genie is out of the bottle', or 'can of worms opened'.

They now need to walk the walk the much spun Green Credentials because going into Administration is more costly than a few extra Euro per engine part,

you upgrade and manufacture parts and sell the vehicles and this is maybe more important than a Cosmetic Face Lift of a car you have no suitable engine for. (Or badges that have Blue / Green / Hybrid on them.)

Mercedes Diesels Banned in the Capital Cities around Europe, banned in France several days a week,

and banned in other World Regions would be costly.

My point really is if this is equipment is needed for diesel going forward to pass the 2017 tests it may make sense on a larger premium car like a Merc but will this make a Diesel Fabia/Fiesta/Corsa or small cheaper PSA vehicles pretty much obsolete.

If your small diesel is going to be £1500-£2000 more than a similar powered turbo petrol then diesel is going to be priced out of the market for all but larger premium cars for people doing higher miles.

re post #622,

We know all that do we not, and have done since 2009 and Euro 5 Emissions and the coming up to Euro 6.

now past, and that is why the German Manufacturers and the French, also the UK wanted the next Reduced Emission Standards put back.  (Small cars doing low mileages really did not need diesel engines, and German Manufacturers

were struggling to get bigger diesels emissions low enough.)

Ryeman,

Open the Bonnet of an Audi A2 to check and fill levels and there appears to be no engine.

Actually open the bonnet of many cars now and what you see is an Engine Cover.

The EU have not wanted anyone other than Official Dealerships tampering after the vehicle leaves the factory for years now,

but not managed to pull that off for the Government backed Car Makers.

North America managed in some states to have vehicles plugged in at the OBD port and get all the vehicles information, emissions etc, that has caught out VW.

So sometime soon the EU will get around to Testing Stations where the Original Manufacturers Weights / Measures,

Noises and Emissions need met at Testing or Roadside testing without modifications.

But by that time the UK might not be in the EU.
